I've been on EVE as an industrialist for a year now, and have made good profits from my endeavors, but a week ago I got tired of it all, and decided to create new characters for the express purpose of PVP and pirating. I continued training one character I had created long ago for the express purpose of PVP, but never used him, and I also trained 2 other characters to be able to use, and fit Rifters. I then formed a corporation with these characters and gave it a bad-assed name. Now It was time to go find some people to victimize.
My mini-fleet went down to 0.3 where everyone and their dog attacked us. We died entering a gate. We died in an asteroid field. We died trying to dock at a space station. We died undocking from a space station. We've been dying over and over and over again, and again.
This morning I decided it was time for someone else to die besides myself, and I was determined to get a kill under my belt, and I didn't care how I accomplished this I was just going to do it. I created another character and trained him up a little to be able to fly the Mimatar Probe. The plan was to send the Probe into a 1.0 asteroid belt, and start mining and dropping jet cans until some greedy, enterprising bastard decided to start helping themselves to all of the contents of the jet cans, and that's when 2 Rifters, and 1 Vexor warp in to deliver some much needed ownage. Sounds simple right? WRONG.
This was my 1st taste of asteroid field, ambush tactics and I was excited. The Probe arrived at the asteroid field and started mining. It didn't take long until he had accumulated over 7 jet cans. There were 2 other miners in the system, but they ignored the Probe's floating bounty. Meanwhile I and my other team mates were near a planet WAITING to ambush anyone who tried to collect the cans. I waited 15 minutes but sure enough, a Thorax warped in all flashy yellow with that little skull on his name tag. "There's my 1st kill" I thought to myself.
The Thorax flew towards the other miners and bumped them around for awhile, and then it did a fly by of the Probe, and its floating jet cans. I suspected that right here the guy was bookmarking the location because at that moment he warped out of the asteroid field. It took 3 minutes but he warped right back in and made a grab for the jetcans, which turned him into a nice flashy red. "Its on!!!" I screamed(Yes I did scream this) as I warped my whole fleet right on top of the Thorax. The moment I arrived I hit him with my new warp scrambler, and opened up on him with my light, auto cannons, and bloodclaw missiles. The other Rifter that was similarly armed opened up as well. Our Vexor let him have it with a bunch of medium 250mm Railguns with medium ion blasters plus 5 Hammerhead I drones.
We were all well tanked. The Rifters with the armor tanking, and the Vexor with the shield tank. We all had damage control I, or IIs installed, and there were 3 of us. We SHOULD have won and had reduced that Thorax into rubble, but nooooooo, it appears the universe had other plans. In a space of 1 minute, 36 seconds that Thorax had destroyed us all. I couldn't believe it! How is this possible?
I was ****ed, so I returned the fleet back to base and decided to wardec that clown and his corp, and his alliance. I started a vote and all members voted, and agreed. A message box came up and said it was going to cost 50 million ISKS for 30 days. I agreed with this, and after selecting "ok" an evemail was sent to all members about the vote. WE ALREADY VOTED!!!! Now there is nothing. There is nothing in the sanctioned acts section, and there is no evemail stating that I have declared war. What happened to my wardec?
I want revenge.

Edited by: Karma97731 on 20/05/2009 12:33:02 Vigilante? It was a Thorax, or was shaped like a Thorax.
I just did a ship check and you are right.
The Vigilant was the first Gallente design the Guardian Angels would steal and make their own, but it wouldn't be the last. Building on the Thorax's natural strengths, it is a deadly vessel both by itself and in fleet tandem. A group of these sluggers is a sight to fear.
Special Ability: 25% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret damage
Gallente Cruiser Skill Bonus: 7.5% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret tracking speed per level Minmatar Cruiser Skill Bonus: 5% increase to MicroWarpdrive capacitor bonus per level
Next time I will check out the specs of a ship I'm going up against. Maybe this is why I FAILED so badly.

I am no troll. BTW what is up with calling people trolls all the time? I've been playing this game for a year and only now am I getting into PVP. Basically what I'm asking from all of you is what did I do wrong? Was my ships not fitted well, and how come my wardec doesn't work?
I'm sure that many of you back in your early days of PVP didn't fair very well either, and here you have a person asking for help and all you can do is call them a troll?
I want my 1st kill instead of being the one who gets killed.

ok ok i bite
1) pvp is not about who has the most ship. that guy prolly has much more experience and a decent setup.
2) u r mostly t1 fitted with crap setups (200m plate? wat?) check ship forums for advises
3) vote goes for 24 hrs. u ll have to wait till those 24 hrs are over. then u can initiate the war. i remember i had similar issues with sanctionable stuff not appearing. it turned out that was just a delay. give it some time. also eve has been quite bugged recently, maybe thats the reason (tho unlikely)

24 hours? That's alright then. I figure if I wardec this guys whole alliance i will get more war than I bargained for and that will force me to constantly upgrade. What really bothered me about the situation is that the guy who made a grab for the Jet cans didn't:
#1 Attack the mining ship that produced mentioned jetcans #2 Didn't collect all the ore from the jetcans #3 Didn't even bother to take all the modules and weapons dropped by my destroyed ships.
Basically that bastard was only interested in killing me and my crew.

Well, here's the deal:
- Despite the suggestions in your previous thread, you still went ahead and started looking for an easy kill (can baiting).
- 2 Rifters and a Vexor. How much does that cost you? Surely, you should know by playing this game (or any other) that you lose. People recommend ships like that because they are cheap and effective. Lost 50 rifters to kill one ship? What matters is the experience. For such a minimal loss, you've already raged, whined and made a thread in C&P. This is a clear indication that you fail at EVE.
- Wardecs initially lasy 7 days. You stated 50 million for 30 days, there's no such thing. Which means you're lying, or once again, clueless.

WoW! You are so quick to judge before you've recieved all of the information. Here is the confirmation to sanction this wardec attmpt:
Type Declare War
Against General Tso's Alliance
Current Costs The cost of declaring war depends upon two main factors. The first is the number of non mutual wars declared against the enemy or by your corporation and the second is whether an alliance is involved in the declaration.
Your corporation will be sent weekly bills for keeping the war declaration in effect. The billable amount will reflect the number of non mutual wars declared against the enemy. At the present time it will cost your corporation 50,000,000 ISK to sanction this war
So I'm correct when I say that it will cost me 50 million ISKs to sanction this war, and plus more money per week? Anyway. I may be many things, but I am no liar, so please do not call me one.

So you were in 1.0 And you dropped some jetcans. (7 of them, which you had filled up by mining with a probe? how long did that take you?) And someone stole from the jetcans. And this somehow gave all your ships kill rights on the thief. So you engaged him with your mighty fleet, and he destroyed them all, without concorde intervening?

No. I'm judging based on what information you have given us. I don't pretend nor want to know the whole story. But as you admit it yourself, there's no '30 days' thing. It costs 50 mil for 7 days, and more after that.
Originally by: Karma97731 A message box came up and said it was going to cost 50 million ISKS for 30 days.
Once again, you stated it would cost 50 mil for 30 days. Those are your words. Don't blame me for your incompetence.

Although I do agree the 7 jet cans part is a bit fishy (I'm pretty sure some would end their timer before then), the probe could easily be in their corp, and the guy stealing from the jet can would be a free target for them due to that.
Originally by: Karma97731 What really bothered me about the situation is that the guy who made a grab for the Jet cans didn't:

#1 Did said mining ship attack him? If not, the Vigilant would get killed by Concord for doing so. #2 Why would he? You said 7 cans. That's many haulers worth of ore. Obviously he can't fit everything in that Vigilant of his. #3 Maybe he wanted to bail before you came back in bigger ships?

Like it or not this is what I get charged if this war happens, and your calling me a liar about it won't change the facts.
This is the message that was on the proposal. It does say 50 million, so there is no lying from me regarding this, and 50 million is chump change to me any way.
The probe is also part of the mini-fleet, and I guess when the Vigilante/Thorax snatched from its jet can it went flashy red. When the other ships warped in the Vigilante was flashing red also. We are all part of the same corporation, and we did form into a fleet, so this explains the "attack one attack all" scenario.
It took the probe 30 minutes or less to mine about 7 jetcans. All the cans were not mined until full which is why this was done so quickly.
This total fail at nailing that ship is not something I'm proud of, and to be called a liar for posting a thread where I got owned is rather thoughtless because of the fact that I DID get owned. There is no glory in this for me. I was just wondering why I got owned so completely. You would think that 3 ships would have prevailed against that guy, but like one posters pointed out, I was using T1 mods and he was T2 equipt, and more experienced.
I'm in training mode like crazy right now. I will get my war, and I will expend lots of ISKs in doing it.

?? When asked about time duration I typed in 30 days, or at least the number 30. I guess I'm not understanding what it is I'm supposed to be lying about. Is it 50 million per week, or 50 million for 30 days? Either way its a drop in the bucket for me.

It's 50 mil for 7 days. After that, the fee will be increased and you'll be given the option to pay or end the war.
Anyway, good luck. Considering one guy managed to kill 3 of you, I wonder what will happen when their entire alliance comes looking for you.

Oh, it will be a bloodbath (meaning my blood) but I will come away with a lot of fighting experience. You have to understand i spent a year being nothing but an industrialist/miner. I spent a year running away from the bad guys in EVE. Sure I made lots of ISKs, but after awhile the game became too predictable, and too boring. Also I got tired of all of the sneaking around in low sec. Now in stead of being a run away from the big bad in EVE I'm now a stand and fight and die sort of person in EVE.
Eventually I will start to have some kills under my belt. My mental shift in the world of eve is that I'm willing to fight, and to risk. I don't care if I lose a 100 ships. I will have my war.
You gotta fight, for your right to partttyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!

I'm as green as you to PvP/piracy, have engaged in it for less than a week, but considering the information given I think the main problem was not abiding to something I've just read in the (very good) Beginner's Guide to Piracy:
Pick fights in your own terms.
Can baiting isn't really conductive to that, you have no control on what ship/player will pick it. While a cruiser + 2-3 frigates may seem to be advantageous against another cruiser, even if it was a regular Thorax I wouldn't pick that fight unless the player was very green (and you can check it using Show Info). The Thorax is faster than the Vexor, can also have a full stack of drones, can tank very well, has damage bonuses to turrets (IIRC) and/or works well as a mini-sniper, which means it can dictate range against a vanilla Vexor. While the frigates help, they may not be able to break the Thorax tank if it is well-fitted. If the player is good, he can just kite the drones and pop them one by one before he has to worry with its tank being breached.
At any rate, you would be better served by can flipping, not baiting. It may take (way) more time to find a victim, but at least you're in control - and if the victim decides it's best not to pick the fight, you can make a profit with the ore flipped.
I started pirating in a Rifter all by lonesome and after getting killed twice in low sec while ratting, I took a similar approach you did - 'I'll just find green victims in high sec, since I'm very green myself' - and already raked a kill via can flipping.
Despite the fact that it was almost too easy, it was satisfying nonetheless. Found a Retriever and a pilot less than 2 months in the game mining and using a secure can. Since he/she was new, I took a chance at him/her not knowing that you need to set a password AFTER anchoring the can or it won't be secured. Got lucky and that proved to be the case - it seems the guy didn't even anchor it. I jetted a can, transferred the ore, and even did the mistake of locking on him/her right away. Still, the guy/girl was stupid enough to transfer the ore back - almost an insta-tackle.
He/she threw an Ogre II at me, which was surprising, but it was just one drone and it didn't do much damage, so I could just orbit the barge and take my time to kill the drone. No hassle. Shot the barge until structure, tried to ramson the pilot, but 'no money for you' was the only answer. Goodbye barge, 2-3 mil profit selling modules (strip miner, expanded cargohold) and some Scordite. Even came back for the secure can, which is sitting in my industrial's cargo right now.
I wish I could find more such victims :)

Yeah. I couldn't help but notice that all 3 of my ships did little damage to that Thorax/Vigilante, but it was dealing massive damage to us, and the T2 drones he was using was only rapidly, ushering our ships to destruction. That battle was depressing because I made a bad call and it cost me 3 ships. If we had nearly destroyed him I would have felt better about it, but it appeared that we only "scratched the paint job" on his ship.
Back to the drawing board and more training is to be done.

Maybe he didn't get to fill them up. Anyway, the Probe is one of those frigates with generous mining bonuses (20% per level). It can mine quite fast for a non-barge.
Quote: And someone stole from the jetcans. And this somehow gave all your ships kill rights on the thief.
'Somehow'? Stealing from cans and wrecks gives the robbed party a 15-minute aggression counter during which the wronged one can shoot the thief with no CONCORD intervention.
This is so basic I wonder why I'm taking the time to respond to it - but I did anyway 'cause if you were just trolling, that would be the lamest trolling I've ever seen.
Quote: So you engaged him with your mighty fleet, and he destroyed them all, without concorde intervening?
Yeah. Once the robbed party shoots a thief, the thief gets his/her own aggression counter towards the other.
In short, CONCORD doesn't mess with thieves either way; it just lets the involved parties take the matters with their own hands. Just like in wardec'ing, come to think of it.

The probe had accumulated 7 jetcans. Robbing from one of these would give the probe pilot, and only the probe pilot, the right to shoot at the thief.

Not exactly. It doesn't give aggression rights only to the probe pilot but to all pilots from his corporation (assuming he's in a player corp).
If you steal from a player wreck, or container, the entire corp of the wreck owner will be able to engage you for a period of 15 minutes. http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Can_Flipping
Note the fleet was formed with alt characters in the same corp.

Heck, even a regular thorax would have bbq'd them into oblivion. I'd even go so far as to say damn near any competently fit cruiser would have taken them down...with the possible exception of the logistics cruisers...they're pretty awful unless you get them together in packs :) --

1. Thoraxes rock 2. Vigillant rocks even harder 3. I wouldn't recommend micromanaging 3 ships at the same time 4. Why you mixing 250mm rails and blasters on the same setup? 5. Since he was using light ion blasters, he probably had a 1600 plate fitted with around 5-6k armour.
Nice bait plan though. Unlucky.

Some tips for you Karma....
Be patient, you still have to train skills just like everyone else regardless of how much of a cold blooded pvp'r you think you are already. Being able to fight is something that takes time and experience, you cant just jump into a fight with a handful of halfassed pilots in ill-fit tech1 crap and expect to win, even if you are only going after one guy. You need to train, learn how to fit your ships, and structure/command your gang. A good pvp pilot will take a couple of rifters and a shield tanked vexor (lol) and swat you like flies.

If you're serious about learning PVP, the first thing to do is calm down. The second is to spend some time on Ships/Modules (not really very good, but better than nothing) or the Scrapheap-Challenge fitting forums. Learn how to tank and what ships are best at it- for example, don't shield-tank a Vexor (or most Gallente ships).
You'll need to train a lot of support skills. The basic ones like Mechanic and so forth. The amount of effectiveness they introduce to your setups cannot be overstated.
You'll need patience, a willingness to learn and patience.

I lost 2 more Rifters today trying to figure out my ships setup. I fought some guy who was flying an Inquisitor. We fought for like 20 minutes. My armor tank was holding up pretty good, and he was also very well protected. My flaw was not being able to get in maximum range to use my auto cannons to their full effectiveness.
Also, while I was busy repairing my armor my capacitor kept running out of juice, so this right here says that I need to train up my repair system skills, and the fact that guy was able to stay out of range was because I ditched my afterburners for another module. This tells me that I need to train my energy management and energy grid skills.
I guess I have no patience because I want to get into the war now, and the amount of training time it will take for me to get up to speed will be months.

If you're using Rifters it would be well worth it to train for t2 guns. Get Small Autocannon Specialization up to 4 (takes a coupla days) and then put THOSE on your Rifter. Use Republic Fleet EMP ammo. Use Barrage ammo (gives your autos a bit more range, might solve your range problems a little bit.)
Where you can't use t2, use best named (meta 4) modules.

Edited by: Hippy07 on 20/05/2009 23:09:15 You and I are in opposite situations. I've been pvp'ing for years and decided to make an industrial toon for something to do when the targets arent around.
The key to the KM is his guns.
He probably had something like this fitted.
[Thorax, AllTankNoGank-AntiFrig] Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Damage Control II 800mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I 1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Warp Scrambler II Stasis Webifier II 10MN MicroWarpdrive II
Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
Hobgoblin II x5 Hammerhead II x2
with my pvp toons skills (near perfect ) this setup does 334 dps with all hammerhead drones or 299 with a mix. This is with no overheating which any dedicated pvp toon can do.
With just a low grade set of slaves, this setup has 13.2k HP. EHP is 47k. This doesn't include other things that can boost it even more.
This is a thorax setup, with a vig he would be tougher and have the option to add a medium cap booster and switch out the 800mm plate for a Medium armor rep II - fight would need to be decently long to rep more than the 800mm plate gives, this is more of a preference. Overheating helps with setup.
This setup with its small guns and light drones will murder frigates. it will take out most cruisers quickly if they have no plate and im overheating. Solo I've taken on 7+ young pilots in frigates / cruisers. I die too sometimes, but its damn fun and exhilarating to take on so many pilots and not ask for help. My main has 40m+ SP and i do not fly capital ships.
There are more effective setups to do this sort of thing with, but I'm not posting those.
dont expect instant success.

Look dude, having 3 accounts doesn't mean you have 3:1 odds going into any fight. It means that you're three times the noob. You've got no PvP experience, so you controlling three ships is just three easy targets instead of one.
You're doing it wrong. Either take a Rifter, run around solo in lowsec and learn to use your directional scanner and choose your targets wisely, or join a corp, take a Rifter, run around in lowsec with your corpmates (NOT your alts, bozo), learn to use your directional scanner and choose your targets wisely.
Good luck.

Despite some really stupid flaws in logic, the lower end certs (ie, the basic ones) are actually pretty good. I recommend all the basic core ones, the basic tanking ones for the ships you are flying (CBA to re-read) and the basic ones for the guns your are using. That's a minimum.. Try for standard (except don't bother with 'standard' targeting as it needs multitasking 1 for some reason) and you might not get your ass kicked.
Also, no one with a face is allowed to post anymore..

Despite my failure to grasp the canflipping aggro mechanic, I can give you some advice about learning to PVP. Fit cheap ships, go to lowsec, and lose them. A T2 and best-named fit rifter is going to cost you five or ten times as much as a cheapfit one, and you'll still lose it against pilots who have more skill and experience than you.

Thanks to all the people who responded seriously to my posts. I've decided to continue to train all of my PvP pilots, and switched back to my Industrialist characters (yuck!) until my warrior pilots are trained up enough to be able to dish it out and take it in a fight.
There were a lot of good suggestions mentioned here that I will totally heed, and take to heart. With that said its now time to take my 8 accounts of miners and go mine ice. How @#$%@! boring, but at least I will make a profit.

Once again I say to all of you that I am not a troll. I started this thread because I was ****ed for getting owned so completely by that creep flying the Thorax/Vigilante. It was not a pleasant experience for me to get 3 ships blown out from under me in a space of 1 minute, 36 seconds. That sort of experience is reason enough to rub anyone the wrong way, and to add insult to injury that Thorax flying creep had the nerve to say "Good Fight" which only increased my anger. I guess that's just the way it goes some times...
One of my industrialist characters have the training to fly covert ops ships, and also able to use the covert ops cloaking device. Do you realize how maddening it is for an industrialist to fly around in 0.0 security space unhindered while visiting an asteroid field? Very maddening especially when we see moon-sized veldspar that look like it would take a hulk all day just to mine one of them, and not to mention all of the other high valued ores. We can't get at them because:
#1 We started our eve careers, and stupidly only focused on industrial training. *I'm guilty here*
#2 Not all, but many of us thought that eve was all about ISK acquisition. *I'm guilty here also*
#3 Never bothered to find a way to defend ourselves because it would mean more training time. *Guilty as charged*
#4 The horror of losing a ship *Guilty*
My new thinking is that if I want to have at the minerals down in low sec, and 0.0 security space, I'm going to have to take the long route and train for PVP, and pirating to the point where I can beat up people like the best of them, and eventually one day be able to fly around, and fight in 0.0, or mine if I want to without being all freaked out that some ship load of Yarrr's are going to discover I'm there, and blow up and pod my ship to kingdom come. My new thinking is if that ever happened hopefully I would be able to fight back a little and make THEM lose a ship or 2 before they take me down, but it is clear that I'm a LONG way away from that day.
For now I will just keep training my PVP ships until I have strong enough skills, and then go through that annoying, but much needed PVP and pirating training, and maybe hangout with people who are more experienced who will be willing to show me the ropes, but for now I'm once again back to mining, trading, and manufacturing stuff for other people who have the skills, and the confidence to call themselves pirates and PvPers.

Edited by: Benju on 22/05/2009 02:32:50 Ok Karma, my friend showed me this thread and even though i'm not much more experienced with eve, i will give my basic crash course on what i think you should do.
1. have a plan other than "win" going into the fight. for example have all of your fleet fit with sensor damps and at least a web or two. That way your target won't be able to lock any of your ships from any real range and will be webbed down so it can't get any closer. maybe tracking disruptors against turret based ships (like a real thorax). take your pick, but have a plan.
2.if you want to get to 0.0... you need to find an alliance, relisticly it's the only way. at this poit you've tarnished your name too much to really expect it, but if you have isk or the ability to get it, try what someone else said and take any of the actual PvP tutorial offers a lot of alliance (like agony) are offering. being agony certified will give you experience and training and looks nice on your app for a 0.0 alliance.
3. as other people have said... join faction warefare. FW is a good way to get experience in PvP in small gang and fleet battles. you can pretty much decide "i wanna pvp" go into miltia and join a fleet whenever you want, or feel safe(ish) in high-sec
just my thoughts.

Trolling has quite a wide meaning. Feeding it is the only thing that it has in common.. in that regard it's successful.
That it's pretty obvious and crappy is another matter. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

This is true. So are you rating it on its trollingness or its content?

For now I will just keep training my PVP ships until I have strong enough skills, and then go through that annoying, but much needed PVP and pirating training, and maybe hangout with people who are more experienced.....
Look up a corporation called Southern Cross Empire
Our little group specialises in taking industrial, carebear and noob players and turning them into a coherent fighting force. With a solid industrial backing (meaning roughly 1000 T1, fully fitted, cruisers donated to training operations every month) we can afford to take players very new to PvP into areas they've never seen before and have them make pwerdy bangs. You'll lose a lot of ships (if you bother to insure them you'll actually make a profit though) and you'll get podded regularly (so get your jump clones going if you use implants) but I promise you that you'll have more fun doing it then you've ever had shooting at rocks. And by the time you're ready to leave SCE you WILL be a PvP pilot... I'm not around much at the moment but contact any SCE, SCT or SCI pilot in game and they'll happily answer any questions....

I just did a ship check and you are right.
Don't feel too bad, I thought I was up against a Stabber in my 1st PvP outing and it turned out to be a Vagabond.
Worse mistakes have been made, like the scout (or FC?) I read about who reported 5 T1 ships on a gate and his whole gang jumped in only to die to the T2 variants which were actually there.

You need to hang out with some people who are experienced at fitting ships and using them. The problem is not your choice of ships or your bait (the ships you had COULD take out a Vigilant) but rather the setups and tactics used in the fight.
I would say if you really don't want to join just a laid back pvp corp that just kills stuff randomly and learn about setups and tactics etc. then your best bet is to read up on ship setups. Go to the Ships & Modules section on these forums and check out the ship setup index. Leeeaaaaarn about the ships you are going to be fighting with and against. Are they typically close range? Are they typically long range? Missile boats? Drone boats? Gun boats? Could I take out a close-range gank boat like the Vigilant in a raw dps fight with T1 crappy ships, or should I bring in some e-war to tip it in my favor?
