The parameters desktopWidth, desktopHeight, desktopPrimary, desktopSetup, buffersize and texelalign were removed from prefs.ini in a recent cleanup since they were not used anymore. (This cleanup has not yet been released.)
These values are already stored elsewhere (in the *.dat files in the settings folder) or not needed anymore. All settings are configurable from the UI.

has voiceenabled=0 been removed too? I'm trying to run EVE via Wine and I'm pretty sure vivox is killing EVE. Unfortunately nobody seems to know how to disable the dang thing.

Originally by: Antaeras Either my prefs.ini is being ignored with the Revelations II patch, or advancedDevice no longer works.
When they did that horrible change that moved most of the configuration to c:\documents and settings (and broke everyone's ability to maintain multiple correctly-configured copies of Eve), they also secretly copied prefs.ini to c:\documents and settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\Eve\settings. To ensure maximum confusion, they left the old file where it used to be.
Whoever decided that it would be a really great idea to completely break my ability to have two copies of Eve with different settings... Thanks! >:P

They didnt.
From patch notes:
The location of the settings folder can be forced to remain where it was stored prior to Revelations II. This can be useful when connecting a second client to a test server and not mix settings between the clients. If the user choses to revert to this storage format, the shortcut needs to be modified to refer to: "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF". Note the switches (/end and /LUA:OFF) are case sensitive.

No they're not. It's not possible to set a custom window size anymore. When running in Window mode, there shouldn't be any reason to enforce the gfx card's resolutions as many have problems adding custom resolutions to the gfx card setup.

well, what about windowed mode? since we can't dynamically resize the window, its hard to get the "right" resolution.

Has anyone managed to see about re-compiling that list? I'll be downloading the client on my low-end laptop in five minutes, just to get a copy of the new listings and get 'em in here directly for editing and whatnot to make sure we've got up-to-date information instead of it hidden all over the thread.

I'm probably being stupid, but I don't have a prefs.ini. I only see a boot.ini, and a common.ini.
Can someone show me an example prefs.ini, so I can get the advancedDevice business rolling?

Edited by: Akaine Harga on 27/08/2007 22:14:17 For all WinXP (32/64bit, doesn't matter) users who are saying that prefs.ini doesn't work or the changes you do in it have no effect (which is the same thing...):
The prefs.ini you should edit should be in c:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings\. There and only there. The ones you find sometimes somewhere in My Documents or in {EVEInstallationDir}\cache\ are not used by the client currently.
I'm not sure if it was this way before, but it sure is now.
And just one more thing: do not forget to back it up first

To anyone who is running Vista and is still haveing a hard time locateing the prefs.ini file I think I have a resolution for you. I looked everywhere everyone else suggested and most of the folders they were telling me to look for were not visible in Windows Explorer so i solved my problem by running a search for "prefs.ini", make sure you select the option called "Includes non-indexed, hidden and system files" it might take a minute or two to complete the search but it will locate the file and it will be where one of the others listed it but if for whatever reason you were like my unable to see these folders it will give u a shortcut directly to the file. Oh and if you put in the advancedDevice=1 option make sure you spelled it right, there are two d's and make sure you capitalize the D in device, it didn't work for me when I had not capitalized it.

I run two clients at a time. I never knew about the switches to retain correct files in correct folders. Everything seemed to be alright. If I want to maintain two seperate eve installs, with two seperate folders for logs, cache, screenshots, prefs.ini, etc., how do I accomplish this?
Also, with everything now all mashed up into one big directory, is there any way to 'roll it back' to the way it used to be, and possibly somehow sort the logs for one account to one directory and logs from the other to a different directory? I was trying to find a chat log today and it was very difficult with 4 characters logs all going into the same directory and all named by date/time, not named by char/date/time.
Thanks for any help. |

Running Vista Ultimate now. Installed EVE no problem, running fine with /end /LUA:OFF option.
I cannot, however, edit my prefs.ini file. It's still in \Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\AccountX\Cache\ and I can open it, but when I add the advancedDevice=1 option and try to save it, it tells me that it "cannot create the file...." "Make sure the filename and path are correct."
I installed it and run EVE as an administrator, tried running it under XP SP2 compatibility, etc. I cannot edit the file. Any ideas?

you have to run the editor or whatever program you use to edit the prefs.ini in admin mode. the program files folder is protected and wont allow you saving anything there. in admin mode everything should work.

OK, so I have to Find the Notepad.exe and run as administrator and then browse to the prefs.ini and open it, edit it, and save it? Seems like a pain in the ass, but OK.
Actually, I got around it by going back into WinXP (dual boot) and editing it in WinXP and then saving it. Thanks for the help, though.

However, You can adjust folder rights and give to Your account full rights over %/cache folder. But it is better to not use /LUA:OFF stuf - that way You'll not fall into such problem. -- Thanks CCP for cu<end of sig> |

How can I change the buffersize on the UI? I can't find that option.

Im trying to get EVE to work outside home (at college), but it wont connect, I can guess they blocked port 26000, so I cant connect at all, and therefore the prefs.ini file is never created (I guess, unless it got renamed), I tried creating manually EVE/AccountX/Cache/prefs.ini with port=80, but that didn't seem to help, anyone know how I could generate a prefs.ini or bypass/figure out what ports are blocked here and use the unblocked ones to connect to the EVE server ?

CCP, any chance of a way to get some options for custom resolution?
It just seems unreasonable to not have the option since it once was available.

Edited by: Aurora Tagan on 25/10/2007 22:34:55 Hello,
I have just located my prefs.ini file but do not have the 'buffer' line or 'advance device' line in my pref files, can I simply add them to the text line or is it not quite so simple to do? If so how should the code be entered?
Running Vista Business btw.

I thought I'd mention that copying the old prefs file to the location mentioned by a poster above (~/.wine/drive_c/Documents and Settings/user/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/settings) and setting:
desktopWidth=1280 desktopHeight1024 advancedDevice=1
did result in the client running at 1280x1024 even though the only resolution the configuration screen can detect is 2560x1024 (TwinView). The program started maximized on one monitor, but hopefully you can use the 'let the window manager control the windows' option in wine and then use a keyboard shortcut to un-maximize. It worked for me, anyway.
Now if only that 'power of 2' thing was working. I just registered a couple days ago, and I think it still thinks I'm on a trial account; I registered a trial in order to test if multiple clients would work, and it thanked me for my enthusiasm and rejected my connection.

Since the new patch, I've lost the option to play EVE in Windowed 1280x768 mode. Does anyone know how to retrieve lost window sizes? I'm running the client "windowed", but since the patch, the "Window Size" option no longer has 4+ pull-down options, only 2. So I can only select 1024x768 or 1280x1024 now.
I *really* miss my 1280x768 (or was it 1280x800, I dunno)

Well, this PowerStrip application seems to be the brute force way to make it work. I'm not sure if there's a more elegant solution, though.
