UI Size... HOW can I make the UI and thus associated texts, larger...at 1600x1200 the buttons and UI graphics are pretty darn small, let alone the text.
Thanks.

Edited by: CaldariCitizen2023 on 05/02/2007 03:24:24 Posted this in the other thread.. allow me to copy it here..
Apparently Windows Vista doesn't support/like the
"advancedDevice=1" hack.. You'll have to run eve in XP SP2 support mode.
Navigate to your CCP\Eve\ Directory, usually C:\Program Files\CCP\EvE\
Right click on "eve.exe", check "Run this program in compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2)"
Then you should get the advanced device options in the Esc menu while running eve.
I could be completely off base in saying that Vista wont run the advancedDevice=1 line, but I couldn't get the adv options to show up until I ran eve.exe in XP Sp2 compatibility mode.
Also, could be just me, but I CANNOT get eve to run in Windowed Mode, with a resolution lower than my desktop res. Anyone else have this problem?
just my 2isk, hope this helps some frustrated people out there
EDIT:
Originally by: Namo Iluvatar Well, Since it took me so darn long to find it myself I figured I would share for those who may be in the same boat... or may soon find themselves in the same boat.
I'm beta testing Microsfot Vista and naturally, no beta test would be complete without some gaming adventures. Wanting to tweak my prefs.ini file I jumped to the typical location and discovered that it wasn't there. Heck, the whole cache folder didn't even exist!
So... diging around on the hard drive, I finally found where Vista likes to keep this folder/file.
C:\Users\"Your user name here"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\prefs.ini
So... if you find yourself running vista in the near future and you want to edit your prefs.ini file... look for it in this deep dark dungeon that microsoft has created for us.
Windows Vista Home Premium has the cache showing in the regular eve file.. I might have to cruise around a bit and see.. Still trying to get used to where the hell every thing is :(

1 gig of ram is 1024, half of that would be 512
Your line should read
buffersize=512

Eve runs fine with the "advancedDevice=1" option in prefs.ini.
Make sure you didn't just copy your Eve folder over to Vista. The Cache, Capture, and Logs folders are now held via symbolic link to the following folder (If you leave UAC enabled by default): \Users\<UserName>\AppData(hidden)\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\CCP\EVE\

Originally by: OzDeaDMeaT I dont think it has anything to do with memory actually. Ive been playing with this buffer setting and it appears to be a time buffer. By that i mean it increases the amount of buffered information and the time latency to the servers so the game runs smoother for slower connections. I know this because i have 3gb of ram and when i set it to 1536 commands to the game took longer to respond, although the game was INCREDIBLY smooth with no engine line redraws like i normally get when initiating an action.
Im not convinced myself. can we have an official statment over this, as "Buffersize" seem to be a crucial parameter to improve gameplay ? Or at least, has anyone done some extensive tests and can provide us with a strong feedback ? (If you can't prove anything don't bother posting on the matter, thx)
Also, what would be an alternative setting for "music=play" ? stop ? false ? Im interrested in this setting because Im suspecting that turning the music volume down to 0 still doesnt prevent the client from "reading" the music files, in other words you don't hear any music but it's still reading the mucic files in background and waste resources. maybe im wrong on this subject, but i'd like to be able to play with sounds, and be sure that music doesnt use any resource.

I tried setting that resolution, and now my monitor says cannot display it, error message "Sync out of range", so I can't go change it back in the game. Is it possible to change the resolution back elsewhere? I tried the prefs.ini, but it had no effect.

Edited by: Mephos on 21/06/2007 13:39:44 Yes, finding that I am back to a pretty jagged pic in EVE, with my anti-aliasing no longer available to me in the ESC menu even though Advanced Device is set to 1 in the prefs.ini. Anyone know how to get to those AA settings in EVE since Rev II?
Thanks! Mephos
EDIT - wait I was looking in the old location, it copied and not moved things over to the new Vista compatible places. Trying to add advanced device into the new prefs to see what happens.... more later when I find out for sure :)

I can't install Eve at work, (obviously, I think most workplaces would flip, but that's me), so what I was thinking was;
If I could run Eve on my home machine normally, and somehow tunnel my connection from work over port 80. It doesn't need to run fast, only speedy enough to allow simple skill changes/market buys, etc.
Unfortunately my desire greatly exceeds my skill, and I'm a little at a loss as to how to do this. I thought about trying to use OpenVPN and try to tunnel that over port 80, but afaik openVPN won't reproduce the directX video of the eve window, (Haven't tried it though).
Anyone attempting this setup, or something similar?
Thanks!

try looking at a program called "hamachi", you can tunnel over normal networks like a vpn and not be as limited. I suggest you create a static route on the work computer and proxy it to your homemachine over hamachi :)

does prefs.ini even work anymore. After the patch everything was reset. And when i changed everything back it doesn't seem anything is having any effect. My passwords are no longer saved, and my eve performance has gone down, so i dont think my increased buffersize is working either

I also ask for an official explanation of Buffersize if it's rumored to have such an impact on performance. I did some Post-Rev2 hammering w/ this command on a mid-range laptop; dual-core 2k; 2GB system memory; 256MB video memory; running three clients. Using the values of 20, 80, 350, 500, 2000, I experienced absolutely no difference in performance whatsoever.
CPU usage remained 40-50% docked; 70-100% in space. Memory usage remained the same: 1.7GB system; 206MB video; 1.5GB XP page file. FPS values also remained consistent.
Here's where I'm confused...Pre-Rev2 I was running EVE w/ the same system MINUS 1GB system memory, prefs.ini buffersize value of 80. W/ three clients I hit 20-40 FPS in space, depending on solar system clutter. Not bad for a mid-range laptop. Post-Rev2 PLUS 1GB system memory? 5 FPS in a low population solar system and idle in lowly mining cruisers. For you doubters, yes, in-game settings all the same.
IMO, the contribution of buffersize is negligible. Else the "archaic" (to steal the word from another poster) graphic architecture contributes to the problem. Aggravating, and anxiously awaiting patches and Rev3 expansion.

For Windows XP 64 the OS works the game cache similar to Vista.
Here is the default path for the Prefs.ini file:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings
The local settings folder is hidden by default so remember to show hidden files or you may get a little frustrated!
