Disclaimer_______________________________________ Note to users: Messing with prefs.ini will ultimately screw up your EVE Online configurations, but some options will improve performance or tweak the game like it normally cannot: like extremely high RES that your monitor doesn't support. Please note that any changes made to prefs.ini are done by your own risk and if EVE Online doesn't work after that, it is not my fault.
"Safe" Tweaks____________________________________ Safe Tweaks are changes that will/should not cause errors.
eulaagreed eveampgain evevoicegain mastervolume messageperiod music newbie username password savepasswords texelalign uiampgain digit decimal
"Hazard" Tweaks___________________________________ Hazard Tweaks will most likely cause EVE Online to be unable to run or connect to the EVE Online servers, but with the proper configurations can be very useful.
desktopHeight desktopPrimary desktopSetup desktopWidth debug buffersize advancedDevice host inputhost network networkAdvanced port
Useful Tweaks____________________________________ The useful tweaks enable options that are normally hidden to prevent new players from messing with their settings. These are:
advancedDevice buffersize networkAdvanced
Tweak Library____________________________________ The tweak library contains the explanations for every single line in prefs.ini.
advancedDevice Default Setting: Erased Recommended Setting: 1
advancedDevice is a trigger which enables advanced video card options in the graphics tab such as multi-sampling, anti-alias, Z-buffer, and other options.
buffersize Default Setting: 80 Recommended Setting: Varies
buffersize is the trigger that tells EVE Online how much buffer to store into your RAM. Put the setting to half of your physical RAM.
Note: Increases performance
debug Default Setting: 0 Recommended Setting: 0
debug, as the name suggests enables debugging of the code in-game. This can be accessed anyway with the following hotkey: Ctrl + Alt + Shift + M.
decimal Default Setting: . Recommended Setting: .
decimal is a trigger that tells the game what symbol to use in a decimal. Example: setting=., makes 10.00; setting=a makes 10a00.
desktopHeight Default Setting: 600 Recommended Setting: Varies
desktopHeight overrides the ingame height settings, and uses the one in the .ini
Note: May cause errors if a non-standard number/higher resolution than native monitor support is written.
desktopPrimary Default Setting: 0 Recommended Setting: 0
desktopPrimary tells the game if you are using your primary monitor, or secondary monitor.
Note: May cause errors if the computer only has 1 monitor, and trigger is enabled.
desktopSetup Default Setting: 1 Recommended Setting: 1
desktopSetup tells EVE Online to use to the settings in prefs.ini, or to use the settings directly from the monitor cache.
desktopWidth Default Setting: 800 Recommended Setting: Varies
Identical to desktopHeight, except changes width.
digit Default Setting: , Recommended Setting: ,
Identical to decimal except changes in three number sockets. Example: setting=, makes 10,000; setting=a makes 10a000
eulaagreed Default Setting: Varies Recommended Setting: 1221311590
eulaagreed tells the game how many times you've pushed agree to the EULA when starting EVE Online. Setting the trigger to "1221311590" should automatically enable you to push agree without having to scroll all the way down.
eveampGain Default Setting: 1.0 Recommended Setting: 1.0
eveampGain does just what the name says. Controls the volume for AMP Gain.
evevoiceGain Default Setting: 0.55 Recommended Setting: 0.55
Identical to eveampGain except changes voice gain volume.
host Default Setting: 0 Recommended Setting: 0
Tells EVE Online if you are connecting as a client or the server host.
Note: Messing with this can get you banned.
inputhost Default Setting: localhost Recommended Setting: localhost
This was meant for server hosting also, as this trigger specifies the server(host) IP. Localhost is normally 127.0.0.1 and do not change it.
masterVolume Default Setting: varies Recommended Setting: varies
If you don't know what this trigger does, then I'm sorry but you need more help than I can give.
messagePeriod Default Setting: 200 Recommended Setting: 200
messagePeriod tells EVE Online how long active messages should be displayed on the screen before dissapearing.. Stuff like "autopilot warping to stargate".

Edited by: Teen on 14/09/2004 11:38:49 a couple of thoughts on host and port. port specifies the port which to connect to, so it's not very useful to change this even if you ARE behind a firewall unless either your firewall then translates it back to 26000, making it pretty useless you have another computer somewhere forward your connection, which means you'd have to change the host aswell (and set up port forwarding on that box) also, messing with host is very unlikely to get you banned because ccp won't be able to detect it (and why would they care anyway?).

IF i get it right, to host a server you also need to change
role=client
to something else in boot.ini
Ok lets hope i wont get banned :-)
Results (from logs) : {The system cannot find the file specified.} in blue.ResFile: Open failed on "D:\eve-server\script\common\net\GPS.py"
Do you think devs are stupid enough to supply us with their scrips? :)

Isn't this potentially exploitable? It's essentially an instant transport, as you describe it.... That is if you can logout/change value/login fast enough.

Doesnt that simply enables/disables tutorials ?

dynamicTextures=1 (default 0)
Looks like this is new to Exodus in the prefs.ini
Anyone know what this does? I know the name makes the answer obvious but I haven't seen any difference in graphics.

The dynamic textures setting seems to increase disk activity somewhat. So it appears that what is happening is that as textures are no longer needed they are unloaded from memory (is my guess). I suppose this will help to keep the client memory footprint small.
This is only a guess based on what I have noticed with the setting enabled.

Problem, typing your actual password in the password to means its not encrypted therefore a security liability, therefore, if you select
Network Advanced = 1
Then it encrypts it in the prefs.ini file the next time you enter it so long as u choose the Save Password Box which appears.

No, it purely controls whether the tutorial appears or not. It does not move the player anywhere.
An example would be when you clear your prefs.ini and the next time you open the game you're bombarded with "are you sure you want to exit the station tutorial"

Anyone wanna try channeling through a firewall by setting the port-setting to 80 instead of 26000 ? Assuming the firewall allows traffic through that port.
--> is the EVE server also listening on port 80?
why? because i can't do telnet 157.157.139.10 26000
but i CAN do telnet 157.157.139.10 80 ---------------------------------- You won't like me when I'm angry... |

telnet protocol implies some negotiations between server and client, thus causing some data to be sent to server upon connect. It's obvious that upon receiving malformed packets (not initiating EVE protocol) server just drops connection.

You can''t use ''telnet'' to connect to port 26000 on the Eve server because it is not TCP, it is UDP. Telnet assumes a TCP connection.
Use nmap to check the port''s state, or some other program that allows UDP port state checking.
Also, the previous poster was correct.. changing the port number will not get you anything, unless you control the firewall and setup port redirection.

This is kinda OT, but has anyone tried playing EVE through a proxy?
I have a pud job where I do almost nothing, and would like to play EVE while I'm at work. WebSENSE however, spoils my fun. I was wonerding: Any idea what kind of bandwidth usage EVE playing entails? (I'm thinking about setting up a proxy @ my house, using an old AMD K6 233Mhz machine I have, then forward proxying my game connection from there.) Also, any recommendations on the software to run? I've been thinking of putting FreeBSD on that old box, and running Apache 2.0 in proxy mode, or maybe using SQUID. (Although I have no exp. with SQUID, and that might be biting off more than I can chew.)

I do not know if there would be a way to make the eve client connect to a different IP than the actual server, thus it may not be possible :(

EVE seems to be starting up with default settings, no matter what I enter.
File I'm using is in the <Cache> folder, and the first change I made - PW options - worked fine the first two times I restarted EVE.
But now, even tho' the ini is still there w/ the changes I made, EVE boots with default settings every time I start it.
I did an uninstall, and re-install in a different directory. It's still doing the same thing.

Actually, this has nothing to do with the number of times you press the agree button. IIRC this is a checksum of the eula.txt file. When you agree to the eula the checksum is stored in the prefs.ini. On the next log in, the game looks at the storred eula checksum, and compares it to the checksum regenerated from the actual eula. When a patch changes the EULA the storred checksum and the new checksum do not match, so the game prompts you to agree again, and makes you scroll down.

Those lines are stored with the prefix "pickle:" followed by the pickled object data. Do some research on the Python pickle module to learn more. Basically it just says python data type Integer "I" of value 01 (or 00 for what ever line you wish to reference above) So, simply it means you have your Audio turned on (true), and saveing passwords turned off (false). Python data types True, and False are storred as Integers of value 01 and 00 respectively. The pickle module in python is how the language serializes standard data type objects into a text safe representation suitible for DB storrage, or as done in this context, suitable for storrage in a text INI file.
As to the size of your EVE client install growing, that is normal. The EVE client stores things like Character Portraits, Visited planet textures, IGB cache and other data in the cache directory. The only directory in the cache you really need to keep is the \cache\Settings\ directory this contains all the little settings that you set over the months and that are no longer storred in the prefs.ini.
The \cache\Pictures, \cache\Temp, will probably be the largest offenders in bloat. The more character portraits you have clicked on and generated a picture for in EVE, will make the \cache\Pictures\Portraits directory most likely the largest offender over all (since eve stores them as uncompressed DDS ARGB format, they are as large as a plain BMP format). It is safe to delete them, but at the expense of a subtle pause the next time EVE generates the image (though I think you can turn off the autogenerate feature in the ESC menu). Unless you need the harddisk space back, I would just let it go.

If you said the RAM usage to half your physical memory, how would that affect running three clients at the same time? Currently I can do that with no problem (as long as sound is off on all three) if they are windowed with minimal graphics settings.
If I were to set RAM to half physical, would the first client exe'd get it or would it spread evenly over the three as they come online?

why? because i can''t do telnet 157.157.139.10 26000
but i CAN do telnet 157.157.139.10 80
You can''t use ''telnet'' to connect to port 26000 on the Eve server because it is not TCP, it is UDP. Telnet assumes a TCP connection.
Use nmap to check the port''s state, or some other program that allows UDP port state checking.
Also, the previous poster was correct.. changing the port number will not get you anything, unless you control the firewall and setup port redirection.
im assuming this has changed at some point before i joined, but its always been tcp, not udp, since i've been playing.
Telnet'ing to 26000 on 157.157.139.10 should actually dump a bunch of rubish chars to your screen with perhaps "Shiva" in there somewhere..
Depending on which telnet client your using, it may try and send some out of band data.
for eg: [xxxxxx@boson ~]$ telnet 157.157.139.10 26000 Trying 157.157.139.10... Connected to 157.157.139.10 (157.157.139.10). Escape character is '^]'. $~Ŝ{` ShivaVT102VT102VT102

There is one way i've done something like this, basically i was overseas stuck on a private corporate lan with only a web proxy for internet love..
with one machine on the lan running linux, i installed "socks via http" which is a socks server that tunnels thru most web proxies.. using ssh-socks, i connected to my home machine forwarding a local port 26000 (gatewayports=true, if you know what i mean) to 157.157.139.10:26000... then in the eve client i just connected to the local linux maachine. it did work, and there was an issue here and there... but all i really wanted was to change my skill training which is was more the usefull enough for.
You could replace ssh with the linux kernel socks bouncer and then you wouldnt need a machine on the internet somewhere to forward thru most likely, but this is what worked ok for me!

Even easier, I used PortTunnel installed on my work PC to tunnel 26000 through a proxy so that I could run EVE on that PC... Worked a treat, though it may not help in all situations of course! Cheers,

From what i know, the eve client will only store the password with "networkAdvanced=1" in the ini. Downside is, that the advanced login screen is quite messed at the moment as it won't display the motd. This should be fixed with the next patch, although the current build still looks a little bit rushed regarding this aspect. (overlapping buttons anyone?)
To save pwds for two different accounts, you could just create a copy of your prefs.ini for each account and write a little batch that overwrites the original ini with the appropriate copy before the eve client is being launched.

One solution for 'evading' firewalls is VPN. Personally I use openVPN (Either over SSH port tunneling or over an unfiltered port), and just set the default route for EVEs IP to the VPN endpoint (p-to-p VPN). That requires that you have some sort of SNAT or such at the source machine, though.
At work I use OpenVPN to connect to a server at port 23 or 8080 (both are unfiltered), and then iptables on it to SNAT from the VPN. ;-) Works like a charm! (A bit of a hassle to set up, as you need access to a machine with OK upstream, linux knowledge and set up a VPN)

What I'd like is a way to tweak EVE for my specific system below. I can't find any AA settings etc. Is this just becsaue EVE only offers very specific video options, and the rest is done automatically, or what? Maybe I've been spoiled playing Counter STrike Source and Half Life 2. How does teh EVE graphics engine stack up to games like those?
I'm seeing a lot of aliasing around curves and halos too where you can see white shimmering, probably where the textures meet. Is this normal?
Last, is tehre anyway to more teh main windows in the game, like the right information panel, and is tehr any way to enlarge the fonts? I'm playing at my desktop size of 1024 x 768.

I used EVE through a ssh tunnel while i was at uni and the network was being weird, and this is how i did it:
Step 1:
Install PuTTy. PuTTy is a ssh client for windows. It has proxy features built in, which make it very useful for using as a ssh tunnel utility. PuTTy can be found at: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
Step 2:
Get yourself a shell account on a server somewhere. Ideally you'd run your own server to connect through like I do/did, but if that's not a possibility, ask around. Maybe someone you know has a server you could use to proxy through? If all fails, search the internet.
Step 3:
Run PuTTy through the command line (cmd.exe - if you don't know how to get to this, go to "Start" > "Run.." and type "cmd", then hit enter. It should pop up.) If you place PuTTy.exe in your windows, system, or system32 folder, you need only to refer to putty by name as i do, otherwise you will need to navigate to the path you put it in, or run it directly from the path.
In this example, putty is located on my hard drive at d:/stuff/putty.exe, and I am using port 8080 as my local proxy port. My username on the server i am using is Callista, and the server address is omgrawr.com
in the windows command line I type the following:
D:/stuff/putty -D 8080 -l callista omgrawr.com
I am then promted for a password, put in yoru shell account password now. PuTTy is now acting as a ssh tunnel, and running a local socks5 proxy on your machine which you can connect through.
Step 4:
Get and run SocksCap from http://www.socks.nec.com. SocksCap allows you to run any program through it, and it works by "capturing" tcp packets, and routing them through the proxy defined in your preferences. You can use it by simply dragging the eve .exe onto it, or by setting up an eve profile.
Set up your sockscap to use the proxy port you ran PuTTy with, in my case 8080.
So my socks5 proxy server is: localhost and the port is: 8080
Step 5:
Run EVE through SocksCap, and all should work! It did for me anyway! :D
I hope this helps some people, and i hope i haven't missed anything important out.

There is a simple way to do this: 1. Manage to have a SSH connection through were you are I was using Bitvise WinSSHD and Tunnelier to create a SSH tunnel. I still use Tunnelier but now I have a full linux server with OpenSSH. Bitevise website PS: WinSSHD is not free, but Tunnelier is for private use.
2. After you have a connection, go in tunnelier under the C2S fwding tab and add a new entry with these setting: Listen address: 127.0.0.1 Local Port: 26000 Remote address: 87.237.88.200 NEW CLUSTER IP Remote Port: 26000 Comment: EVE
you will need to disconnect and reconnect to enable the port fowarding.
3. Start eve and click on the dropdown for the server. select the text and type 127.0.0.1 instead of "tranquility".
et voila! if you did it right, you will have the Motd and server status. that work for me, maybe for you too. We, girl, Should be elegant. |

I have the following problem: I have 2 computers I use to play eve, on the first I play eve in 1900x1200 (native of my 24" LCD) and the second 1024x768 (videocard limitations...) I want to copy the cache directory from the first to the second compu, so the second compu also has all the BMs in folders, but when I do, the second compu now also tries to start eve in 1900x1200. I have tried to change the "desktopheight" and "desktopWidth" setting in prefs.ini to 1024x768, but thsi has no effect. In conjunction to this I also tried different settings for "desktopSetup" (0,1 and 2) but eve keeps starting in 1900x1200 on the second machine. Prefs.ini seems teo have no effect.
Any help?

What exactly is this default setting value referring to? Is it a percentage of total RAM or is it an explicit value in kilobytes or megabytes?

I dont think it has anything to do with memory actually. Ive been playing with this buffer setting and it appears to be a time buffer. By that i mean it increases the amount of buffered information and the time latency to the servers so the game runs smoother for slower connections. I know this because i have 3gb of ram and when i set it to 1536 commands to the game took longer to respond, although the game was INCREDIBLY smooth with no engine line redraws like i normally get when initiating an action.

The reason there is no cache folder in Vista is because of this:
Vista makes a copy of any changed files in a administrator folder (ie the EVE directory) and makes the game think this folder is there. I dont know where it is, but just run the game as administrator (right click on the icon and go properties, you'll find it), and then the cache dir is there.

Hi and thx for this usefull topic ! I have one question about this option
Quote: port Default Setting: 26000 Recommended Setting: 26000
port sets the port for EVE Online to connect through the internet. Useful if you are behind a firewall.
ok here it is: well im 16 soon 17 years old and i going in the upper secondary school (IT) and well from my school we gat a free laptop :D ... and we may install whatever we whant on it. and when it comes to games we are alowed to have it but not in lesons, only at reseses and after school, wich i think you can guess. and well ive installed eve on it, and it works grat! but the thing is that i cant connect to my acc in school because of the firewall ... ive tryed to change this "port" but it just dosnt work. as you saied "Useful if you are behind a firewall" but why dosnt it work !? ???? Please tell me how im suposed to do!

Well, Since it took me so darn long to find it myself I figured I would share for those who may be in the same boat... or may soon find themselves in the same boat.
I'm beta testing Microsfot Vista and naturally, no beta test would be complete without some gaming adventures. Wanting to tweak my prefs.ini file I jumped to the typical location and discovered that it wasn't there. Heck, the whole cache folder didn't even exist!
So... diging around on the hard drive, I finally found where Vista likes to keep this folder/file.
C:\Users\"Your user name here"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\prefs.ini
So... if you find yourself running vista in the near future and you want to edit your prefs.ini file... look for it in this deep dark dungeon that microsoft has created for us.

texelalign: adjusting texture alignment, some graphics card disply textures aligned wrongly, mostly shows up as unreadable text. Adjusting this can fix it.

Hell all,
I'm a newb playing Eve (the tutorial) on a trial. So far, very interesting.
Anyway, in my pref.ini file I do not have the "advancedDevice" entry listed.
I have the latest version of Eve, .25245
Anyone know why this entry is missing?
I really want to find the optimum graphics settings for my card, 9700pro, and system.
Thank you, in advanced.

Any specifics on the setup of this server that need to be adhered to? I'm not so much a Linux guru, but I can find my way around. Do I just need system with my own user account and remote SSH logins enabled?
Also, is it a big deal to run this entire production (the SSH link between the machine I'm playing on and the linux box that's acting as a proxy) over port 80? Stupid work firewall (WebSENSE sucks) blocks almost everything. It's amazingly comprehensive.
Thanks for any help/suggestions you guys can provide.

I think the firewall port thingy doodah is if you can only have set ports open on your network. You still need to tell the firewall / router to send incoming traffic from EVE on port 26000 to the port you have specified in your prefs.ini I am probably wrong about this as I donĈt know networking that well. I bet if you asked your IT manager at high school to allow this port, and tell him why, he would open it for you. Would you ĉcouldĈ do is set up something that bounces all requests to your home pc on port 80 to eve on port 26000 and relays that back to your laptop at school via port 80, or any other open port on the school network.
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

I had this happen. You have to exit the game first or it gets overwritten when the game closes.

Edited by: Ganthrithor on 26/11/2006 21:07:53 Hello guys,
I am relatively new to EVE, but I've edited .ini files before (for unreal tournament). I was reading about how to turn on anti-aliasing options etc in EVE and found this thread. I added the "advancedDevice" item to my prefs.ini at the top of the list like so...
advancedDevice:1
...but I don't see any AA options in the graphics pane. In fact, no additional objects seem to have appeared... and z-buffer was already there.
I also tried using the nvidia control panel to set a profile for EVE, first using the existing app profile, then when that didn't work by creating a new profile and browsing to eve.exe. Neither seems to do anything (I have 8xAA set in both profiles, amongst other things...)
Any ideas?
Thanks
Oh, and excellent guide. Very good idea.

Apparently Windows Vista doesn't support/like the
"advancedDevice=1" hack.. You'll have to run eve in XP SP2 support mode.
Navigate to your CCP\Eve\ Directory, usually C:\Program Files\CCP\EvE\
Right click on "eve.exe", check "Run this program in compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2)"
Then you should get the advanced device options in the Esc menu while running eve.
I could be completely off base in saying that Vista wont run the advancedDevice=1 line, but I couldn't get the adv options to show up until I ran eve.exe in XP Sp2 compatibility mode.
Also, could be just me, but I CANNOT get eve to run in Windowed Mode, with a resolution lower than my desktop res. Anyone else have this problem?
just my 2isk, hope this helps some frustrated people out there

Eve runs fine with the "advancedDevice=1" option in prefs.ini.
Make sure you didn't just copy your Eve folder over to Vista. The Cache, Capture, and Logs folders are now held via symbolic link to the following folder (If you leave UAC enabled by default): \Users\<UserName>\AppData(hidden)\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\CCP\EVE\

Originally by: OzDeaDMeaT I dont think it has anything to do with memory actually.
Im not convinced myself. can we have an official statment over this, as "Buffersize" seem to be a crucial parameter to improve gameplay ? Or at least, has anyone done some extensive tests and can provide us with a strong feedback ? (If you can't prove anything don't bother posting on the matter, thx)
Also, what would be an alternative setting for "music=play" ? stop ? false ? Im interrested in this setting because Im suspecting that turning the music volume down to 0 still doesnt prevent the client from "reading" the music files, in other words you don't hear any music but it's still reading the mucic files in background and waste resources. maybe im wrong on this subject, but i'd like to be able to play with sounds, and be sure that music doesnt use any resource.

I can't install Eve at work, (obviously, I think most workplaces would flip, but that's me), so what I was thinking was;
If I could run Eve on my home machine normally, and somehow tunnel my connection from work over port 80. It doesn't need to run fast, only speedy enough to allow simple skill changes/market buys, etc.
Unfortunately my desire greatly exceeds my skill, and I'm a little at a loss as to how to do this. I thought about trying to use OpenVPN and try to tunnel that over port 80, but afaik openVPN won't reproduce the directX video of the eve window, (Haven't tried it though).
Anyone attempting this setup, or something similar?

try looking at a program called "hamachi", you can tunnel over normal networks like a vpn and not be as limited. I suggest you create a static route on the work computer and proxy it to your homemachine over hamachi :)

I also ask for an official explanation of Buffersize if it's rumored to have such an impact on performance. I did some Post-Rev2 hammering w/ this command on a mid-range laptop; dual-core 2k; 2GB system memory; 256MB video memory; running three clients. Using the values of 20, 80, 350, 500, 2000, I experienced absolutely no difference in performance whatsoever.
CPU usage remained 40-50% docked; 70-100% in space. Memory usage remained the same: 1.7GB system; 206MB video; 1.5GB XP page file. FPS values also remained consistent.
Here's where I'm confused...Pre-Rev2 I was running EVE w/ the same system MINUS 1GB system memory, prefs.ini buffersize value of 80. W/ three clients I hit 20-40 FPS in space, depending on solar system clutter. Not bad for a mid-range laptop. Post-Rev2 PLUS 1GB system memory? 5 FPS in a low population solar system and idle in lowly mining cruisers. For you doubters, yes, in-game settings all the same.
IMO, the contribution of buffersize is negligible. Else the "archaic" (to steal the word from another poster) graphic architecture contributes to the problem. Aggravating, and anxiously awaiting patches and Rev3 expansion.

They didnt.
From patch notes:
The location of the settings folder can be forced to remain where it was stored prior to Revelations II. This can be useful when connecting a second client to a test server and not mix settings between the clients. If the user choses to revert to this storage format, the shortcut needs to be modified to refer to: "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF". Note the switches (/end and /LUA:OFF) are case sensitive.

No they're not. It's not possible to set a custom window size anymore. When running in Window mode, there shouldn't be any reason to enforce the gfx card's resolutions as many have problems adding custom resolutions to the gfx card setup.

well, what about windowed mode? since we can't dynamically resize the window, its hard to get the "right" resolution.

Has anyone managed to see about re-compiling that list? I'll be downloading the client on my low-end laptop in five minutes, just to get a copy of the new listings and get 'em in here directly for editing and whatnot to make sure we've got up-to-date information instead of it hidden all over the thread.

I'm probably being stupid, but I don't have a prefs.ini. I only see a boot.ini, and a common.ini.
Can someone show me an example prefs.ini, so I can get the advancedDevice business rolling?

The prefs.ini you should edit should be in c:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings\. There and only there. The ones you find sometimes somewhere in My Documents or in {EVEInstallationDir}\cache\ are not used by the client currently.

To anyone who is running Vista and is still haveing a hard time locateing the prefs.ini file I think I have a resolution for you. I looked everywhere everyone else suggested and most of the folders they were telling me to look for were not visible in Windows Explorer so i solved my problem by running a search for "prefs.ini", make sure you select the option called "Includes non-indexed, hidden and system files" it might take a minute or two to complete the search but it will locate the file and it will be where one of the others listed it but if for whatever reason you were like my unable to see these folders it will give u a shortcut directly to the file. Oh and if you put in the advancedDevice=1 option make sure you spelled it right, there are two d's and make sure you capitalize the D in device, it didn't work for me when I had not capitalized it.

I run two clients at a time. I never knew about the switches to retain correct files in correct folders. Everything seemed to be alright. If I want to maintain two seperate eve installs, with two seperate folders for logs, cache, screenshots, prefs.ini, etc., how do I accomplish this?
Also, with everything now all mashed up into one big directory, is there any way to 'roll it back' to the way it used to be, and possibly somehow sort the logs for one account to one directory and logs from the other to a different directory? I was trying to find a chat log today and it was very difficult with 4 characters logs all going into the same directory and all named by date/time, not named by char/date/time.
Thanks for any help. |

Running Vista Ultimate now. Installed EVE no problem, running fine with /end /LUA:OFF option.
I cannot, however, edit my prefs.ini file. It's still in \Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\AccountX\Cache\ and I can open it, but when I add the advancedDevice=1 option and try to save it, it tells me that it "cannot create the file...." "Make sure the filename and path are correct."
I installed it and run EVE as an administrator, tried running it under XP SP2 compatibility, etc. I cannot edit the file. Any ideas?

you have to run the editor or whatever program you use to edit the prefs.ini in admin mode. the program files folder is protected and wont allow you saving anything there. in admin mode everything should work.

OK, so I have to Find the Notepad.exe and run as administrator and then browse to the prefs.ini and open it, edit it, and save it? Seems like a pain in the ass, but OK.
Actually, I got around it by going back into WinXP (dual boot) and editing it in WinXP and then saving it. Thanks for the help, though.

Im trying to get EVE to work outside home (at college), but it wont connect, I can guess they blocked port 26000, so I cant connect at all, and therefore the prefs.ini file is never created (I guess, unless it got renamed), I tried creating manually EVE/AccountX/Cache/prefs.ini with port=80, but that didn't seem to help, anyone know how I could generate a prefs.ini or bypass/figure out what ports are blocked here and use the unblocked ones to connect to the EVE server ?

I thought I'd mention that copying the old prefs file to the location mentioned by a poster above (~/.wine/drive_c/Documents and Settings/user/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/settings) and setting:
desktopWidth=1280 desktopHeight1024 advancedDevice=1
did result in the client running at 1280x1024 even though the only resolution the configuration screen can detect is 2560x1024 (TwinView). The program started maximized on one monitor, but hopefully you can use the 'let the window manager control the windows' option in wine and then use a keyboard shortcut to un-maximize. It worked for me, anyway.
Now if only that 'power of 2' thing was working. I just registered a couple days ago, and I think it still thinks I'm on a trial account; I registered a trial in order to test if multiple clients would work, and it thanked me for my enthusiasm and rejected my connection.

Since the new patch, I've lost the option to play EVE in Windowed 1280x768 mode. Does anyone know how to retrieve lost window sizes? I'm running the client "windowed", but since the patch, the "Window Size" option no longer has 4+ pull-down options, only 2. So I can only select 1024x768 or 1280x1024 now.
I *really* miss my 1280x768 (or was it 1280x800, I dunno)

check it well, its not C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data but C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\, check the username as well. Hope hidden/system attribute on ..\Local Settings\Application Data dirs is not your current problem. If it is, change folder configuration in windows control panel so u could see these dirs, alternatively just type the path in path string in explorer.
Now, there is a chance u have all your dirs and no prefs.ini in there. If its the case it means there is something wrong with your client and it doesn't start properly. Probably that's the reason youre getting this black screen.
Anyways i'd try the following: 1. delete the CCP dir inside ..\Local Settings\Application Data; 2. run eve client once, entering with your login@pass; 3. wait until it loads the char selection screen (if its the black screen again just wait a little, note if it still plays music just to check if its running at all); 4. exit by exiting it normally or killing the process if u can't see a thing. 5. check the newly created CCP dir inside ..\Local Settings\Application Data, search for the prefs.ini. If the CCP dir is not there go to step 10; 6. the dir is there but the file is not? search any of its copy in {EveInstallDir}\cache\, I doubt it would be there if u don't have it in original place though. If not, try to get it from other machine with eve working; 7. edit it and using the desktopHeight/desktopWidth parameters define your monitor resolution; 8. now save it to C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings\ 9. start the client again; 10. if you still have the same black screen problem or something went wrong with dirs creation client behaviour i'd really recommend reinstalling the damn client from scratch.
hope it helps. post your comments if not

I have finally figured it out myself. I use putty to do my port forwarding. Source and Destination are both 87.237.38.200:26000, Local, and Auto. No socks being used here. Then I had to install "hardware" on my computer. This is virtual network adapter from Microsoft. I use XP btw. Add hardware, Choose "yes, i have already connected the hardware", bottom of the list choose Add a new hardware device, Choose Install the hardware that i manually...., network adapters, Manufacturer is Microsoft, rights side is MS Loopback adapter, finish. Open up network connections from the control panel. Right click the loopback adapter, properties. Highlight Internet protocol, click properties. Set the ip to be 87.237.38.200. Subnet i use 255.0.0.0.
With that set up and putty running, now you should be able to connect from behind a firewall, using the server name that they will not allow you to change.
Btw.. I am not sure that the game uses the prefs.ini file anymore.
Good Luck :)

I'm using Vista Ultimate 64-bit and it's not working. When will they fix this if they will at all? And since so many people are trying to edit this one feature, why doesn't CCP just keep it in the menu by default? They should trust us to be able to decide whether or not we want to have anti-aliasing. Every other game does. If my computer slows down then i'll take it off. But i have a computer that can handle Crysis, so give us a choice, please.... Whats the point of the upgraded graffics if most people are seeing jaggies anyway?

More observations:
- forced AA seems to work only in fullscreen mode; - some ppl say they have to turn "Temporal AA" on in video card control panel to make AA work; - one of the ways to make HDR and AA work together is achieved by using nHancer (this solution is for nVidia cards only);

This did the trick! That information should be stickied and/or added to the settings page somewhere for all people to find that use a proxy!

I'm using the Windows XP Media Center edition.
I did go to C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings and I edited the Pref.ini in there.
But it doesn't do anything. For example, when I first opened it up,the line "advancedDevice" was not in there. So I added advancedDevice=1 and double checked to make sure there is no repeat. But when I started the game, it didn't work. I did not get any new graphics options in the option menu when hit the ESC button

I must be missing something, because I just started playing Trinity yesterday (after a long hiatus) and I can't get advancedDevice=1 to do anything. I remember quite clearly when I played back in the day that I had this option working, and therefore had AA and AF in the ESC menu... any ideas?

My login screen at work has saved 6 or more account login names for all my accounts. My computer at home, only saves 2 of them.
Is there a setting in prefs.ini that allows the login screen to remember a set number or unlimited number of login Ids? Not the passwords, just the ID's.
Thanks in advance.

Edited by: diesel420 on 02/04/2008 16:01:10 I have dual 22"lcds Both monitors are Samsung 226bw's are acting as one big picture.1680x1050x2 (3360x1050) Looks great and great fps. My problem is that where my 2 screens butt up my ship is split in half on each screen. Im pobably sh$t out of luck but im still going to ask. Is there a way to shift the ship to be on one monitor? Like a FOV setting? My reason I got two monitors is to have all my chat, corp, and local windows on one screen and fighting on the other. Im thinking im going to have 3 monitors so the ship will be in the middle.

I'm trying to setup automatic login by setting the username/password in the prefs.ini file. I haven't been able to get it to work, though. I wonder if someone can tell what I'm doing wrong.
First of all, I found my prefs.ini file here:
C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings
This is a little different from what I've read, but I'm assuming it's just the new location for the latest version of EVE.
It seems like the right place. If I delete it, then run eve, eve re-creates it.
Anyway, here's what my file looks like:
clusterMode=LOCAL clusterName=QUATZ@QUATZ debug=0 decimal=. digit=, host=0 inputhost=localhost languageID=EN messagePeriod=200 movecapturedone=1 movesettingsdone=1 newbie=0 port=26000 advancedDevice=1 desktopHeight=800 desktopSetup=1 desktopWidth=1280 eulaagreed=1221311590 password=mypassword savepasswords=1 username=myusername
I basically added everything after the "port=26000" line.
But, when I run eve, I still have to type in my password. It seems like nothing has changed. So, I assume I'm not doing it right, somehow.
Thanks in advance for any help. |

OK, so it wont auto-log me in. I guess that was me hoping for too much. But, it's also not saving my password. I have to type it in every time.

Edited by: FreeBird2k on 21/04/2008 22:11:00 IĈve managed to get it to 2880x768 res across my triple monitors (3-1280x1024) without using TripleHead2Go device in window mode. I am trying to get 3840x900 or 3840x1024 resolutions and IĈm still working on that so once I get it to work IĈll be happy. I somewhat tricked the Eve program using my dual head nvidia videocard that you can make your dual monitor to span and the highest resolution setting which my monitor didnĈt really support it it was all goofy until I get the resolution set then quit the program. I set the monitor back to normal and run the program and gave me the resolution option to 2880x768 in window mode. Not too bad I can open IE on the very end on the side of the monitors which is readable and IM on the other side after I centered the window to the middle monitor whiel the window overlapped 2/3rd of the sides screens. IĈm going to try to make a link of the photo later.
Oh by the way I have 2nd PCI-e video card and thats how I got 3 monitors going but I can't span 3 monitors, only 1 videocard can span not both cards.
pref.ini seem usless for me. I wish CCP was more flexible with the pref.ini tweaks to us. this game still rocks!

They removed this feature from the prefs.ini after the mass account theft last year or whenever it was. The remember password line doesn nothing now. |

Has anybody been able to get desktopHeight and desktopWidth to work in the prefs.ini? I usually have 1 EVE window a different size of the other and now this has become a difficult task to do on a daily basis by hand.
Any suggestions?

Probably because you use EVE Launcher
Why doesn't anyone bother to update this guide it clearly seems to help people get better performance and such... Besides how does anyone get info about those variables if none of the CCP employees ever publicly talk about it?

I can't get EVE to connect at work, but I do get EVEmon to run...
In EVEmon I have the following options:
Use custom proxy settings: Here I enter the Host and port. Together with authentication settings where I enter my username and pass.
That got EVEmon to connect. Does EVEmon use the same port as EVE does? And if it does how can I get these settings done for EVE in prefs.ini?
Many thanks in advance!

3. Start eve and click on the dropdown for the server. select the text and type 127.0.0.1 instead of "tranquility".
et voila! if you did it right, you will have the Motd and server status. that work for me, maybe for you too.
this worked perfect !!! although to clear thing up for some ppl, cause i was confused at first how to do it ... - you need to install the server on your home PC (nothing needs to be set if your company lets you use port 22, if not like in my case i had to go to Settings-Server-Bindings and change the 22 into 443) - run the server - at work install the tunnelier - in tunnelier configure the next to be able to connect to your home PC: - host (your home PC IP) - port (default is 22, but i had to change it to 443) - username/password or whatever means you choose to authenticate - login and set the above quoted stuff (don't change any port settings in the EVE .ini files!) latest Remote address:87.237.38.200 |

First go to Control Panel in Vista, open Folder Options and Click the View Tab, Look dow the list and click for 'Show hidden files and folder' Apply.
Next is C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings
You'll find one copy of the Pref.ini file in there
and
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\settings
a second copy of the Pref.ini in there.
But to be honest it won't do you any good. Enabling advanced graphics doesn't show the AA box.

I can't seem to get this to work. I'm doing my port forwarding through ssh using Tunnelier, it tells me: ... Authentication completed. Initializing client-side client-2-server forwarding on 127.0.0.1:26000 succeeded. Auto opening SFTP session. Auto opening xterm terminal session.
______ So we know that port 22 is letting me through.
In tunnelier under the C2S fwding tab I added a new entry with these settings: Listen address: 127.0.0.1 Local Port: 26000 Remote address: 87.237.88.200 NEW CLUSTER IP Remote Port: 26000 Comment: EVE
I have not changed any settings in the eve prefs.ini file located under C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings
It still is not working... Do I need to change anything in the prefs.ini file & is that still the correct prefs.ini file directory? Do I need to add any S2C forwarding in Tunnelier? Do I need any Socks/Proxy Forwarding enabled under the "Services" Tab? There is also a Proxy settings button under the "Login" tab do I enable proxy & change any settings in there? There is also settings under the "Terminal" tab do I change anything in there?
Any input to make a complete guide would really help me out.
Thanks for any help. |

I'm connecting through Tunnelier and Sockscap with a server set up at my home. But just recently I started receiving an error when attempting to connect. Incompatible (protocol) I've been tweaking and fiddling for the last hour or so now to no avail. Has anyone else run into this error and if so how did you work around it.
