Not that proud, then... I haven't updated because I don't want to go through the hassle of setting everything up again. But it's the third version of OpenSUSE I've used, so I daresay I will eventually update again soon. |

Ubuntu 9.04 also and just a week ago I made it my primary (and only) operating system on my travel/business/fun/work laptop D:
I still have a monster desktop with raid and awesome crunching capabilites but I am not really interested in putting it in Linux as main os because it can play quite a few games (also because it has software raid and it never seems to want to reinstall windows :(:(:()

Yes, Linux distribution. People say "Linux" for "Linux distribution" just the way you say "Linux" for "Linux kernel". So, please, say what distribution is your bug-ridden, unstable and untested version of Linux based on? -- If there is anything in your life you fear of losing, then keep your mouth shut once in a while. |

I run Ubuntu 8.04 (LTS ftw!) on both my desktop and laptop. On the desktop I dual boot with windows XP, though I haven't logged into that in ages.
I've been looking into install Yellow Dog on my PS3 for kicks to see how it runs, and am currently researching if there is a reliable and useable distro for PocketPC's (I have an old iPaq that's been sitting on the shelf for awhile, thought it might be fun to experiment with).
As for EVE, I run two clients on a dual screen setup, one at 1680x1050 (primary), the other at 1400x900 (hauler alt). |

If you compile your own, it is the kernel version + gcc, libraries, etc. Check out LFS (Linux from scratch) and it's a good spot to learn how. I have a box at home that's built from scratch manually following the guidelines from LFS. It's incredibly fast to have every single piece compiled from scratch ;) It is, however, VERY hard to maintain for upgrades though since you have to do quite a bit of investigation on what patches you need to upgrade components without breaking the entire thing.

You may want to consider starting to migrate away from the Reiser branch. Given the author's current accessibility and mobility issues there's considerable doubt that he can continue maintaining it. In any case, there are now good solid alternatives.
One of these days I may need to revisit it, though -- I have at least one hard disk in my drawer from a defunct system with reiserfs on it that I'd like to recover.

I patch the Reiser4 patch myself (ie: to get it working on the latest kernel). Sometime I get the Edward patch, wich contain bugfix and improvement. Currently I'm still reporting bug and I can tell you one thing : Reiser4 is not dead! It's the open source power... The author can die, this will not stop a project to live (if the project is usefull)
Current R4 patch here up to 2.6.30.
Edit : btrfs will be a good remplacement when he will get a stable diskformat... Until that, I use it only for my laptop cheapo SSD.

Wow! Quite the mix of distros around here, usually when you ask in regards to a game, half the responses are Ubuntu. =P Incidentally, that's what I run, 9.04. I'm sure I'll get a few noses turned up at that, but it's SO nice to have an OS you can install, configure, and outfit with apps in under an hour. And EVE actually runs faster under Linux on this system than it does under Windows XP!

I just put Fedora 11 64-bit on a new quad core. Having a few probs getting mine to work this time too.
1) Regular installer that downloads always fails checksum - workaround is to download the full version. 2) After installing full version, trying to decypher exactly what a general error is and why it has no details ;)

Works like a charm w/fonts added. With KDE's "fullscreen" mode for windowed EVE clients the game experience is even better than in Windows. I prey Dominion don't screw it up.

Ohh, and a custom linux I put together from source for a very old seimens laptop someone gave me, because I had to install it from 1.44 floppies and it has an odd chipset - and Windows ME pre-installed (Gaaaaaaa!). So I rescued it.

It's "simple" in that the distro gets out of your way and lets you set up the system the way you want it instead of holding your hand and making design decisions you should be making - unlike some other software distributions of the GNU/Linux operating system (ubuntu and its derivatives come to mind). --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

I'm referring to the BSD distributions. And they have little to nothing in common with GNU/Linux. A higher degree of screening and auditing, it's cleaner and better maintained, more stable, more robust system all together. And there is no denying it. I could allays dig up some benchmarks for you if you would like that, as well.

That is rubbish. BSD is no faster or stable than a solid Linux distro. You pull your benches I'll pull mine. They both have tradeoffs. Also, look up the definition of rubust. Are you really trying to say NETBSD is even in the same category of FreeBSD, Debian's BSD kernel or OpenBSD?
Please, you don't have to even try to pimp out BSD. It doesn't need your help. It sure as **** doesn't run games any better than Linux. And let's not forget that the only BSD thing about OSX is the userspace... the kernel isn't even BSD... it's Mach's successor.
I'd run BSD for a jails server for VPS web hosting, and that is about it. It would be Debian's upcoming version at that.

Hey, EVE noob here...I'm totally loving this game so far -- best game I think I've played.
I run EVE via Wine in Arch and Mint, both 64 versions. I change the distro depending on my mood. I have some problems in Arch, for some reason; but, I think that might be because I built wine for 64 bit libs with Pulseaudio support (via the AUR.) I might try it sans Pulse to see if that gets it to work any better.

Arch x64, Suse x86_64 Wine 1.1.41 from AUR. With the most recent update you need samba installed for some reason too (calls on one of the NT libs - only discovered that because I was trying to get Eve up and running before installing the NTFS/Samba packages)

Don't use pulse, it's flaky at best and it'll work just fine without. Also make sure you have all the 32bit Wine libs installed - Wine itself is still only 32bit. -------------

Edited by: Neuntausend on 03/04/2010 18:22:47 pulse audio in arch linux x64 works just fine, enables me to use mangler as a native vent client and provides a lot better sound quality than alsa-oss with the native teamspeak 2 vlient.
if you know how to do it that is.
i had problems with arch x64, pulse and wine as well, because arch doesn't offer a 32bit build of wine patched for pulse audio, neiter in aur, nor the standard repos. wine with the alsa wrapper or padsp won't work, because neither pulse audio nor wine pill in lib32-pulseaudio (and wine needs that, because it's a 32 bit app - at least if you want it to run 32 bit windows apps, as eve.)
so there's two things you have to do:
1: the easy part:
yaourt -Sy lib32-pulseaudio (if you have yaourt, if not i guess you will know how to do that manually, if not: rtfm)
2: the not so easy part:
either install 32 bit arch on another disk or computer or set up a 32bit environment inside your 64 bit installation (that's what i did. rtfm), chroot into it and build wine-pulse from aur there. (also works with yaourt, if you want) then don't install the package there, but copy it over to your 64 bit system. you can then install it outside of the chroot by typing:
pacman -U <packagename>
you have to do this, because building wine-pulse in 64 bit will give you a 64 bit binary, and you don't want that, as it will only work with windows-64bit-software, what eve isn't.) this is just the quick and dirty solution, but i am too lazy to do it the clean arch way. also it works just fine, so i just have no reason to. it is possible that you also need to install several 32bit libs, as lib32-libpng, but they are all in the repos or aur.
if you people are interested in the package, just let me know. i can build and upload the package for you, but i won't make a regularily updated aur pkgbuild for it.
also: brenni - this is getting old, i think we all know what linux is a kernel, but this is not quite what the thread is about.
and now, enough offtopic-spam by me today.

I might be interested. I'm currently using Alsa (with dmix support). Everything works quite perfectly (that is, Teamspeak + EVE or Mangler + EVE).
HOWEVER, I use two sound cards (USB and internal), and if I want to switch the output channel I have to quit X, edit ~./asoundrc, and restart ALSA. Not a huge problem, but its enough.
I tried Pulseaudio about 6 months ago, and the problem was getting wine to work properly with it (by the way, I use Arch 64, as well.)
EDIT: Ah, I see you use a chroot...hmm...might be better in the long run...but, I'm a little trigger shy on setting up a chroot for some reason.
