Hello, my name is Fink Angel and I am a certificate addict.
I happily ignored it for a while, but since claiming the certificates that were due, I now base my training around getting complete groups of skills up to Elite status. Now I'm just addicted to cert collecting.
It's actually been pretty handy in that it brought to my attention that my character with 12 mill SPs in gunnery did not have the skill Controlled Bursts at all!

if you fly mostly minmatar, controlled bursts hardly has any reasonable value. Unless you fit lasers to minmatar ships.

Exactly. I have Large Arty spec to 4, large AC spec to 4 ... no need for controlled bursts, but I need it to get the gunnery certs! |

That's the prolem with them, they are too tempting.... I mean do I really need mechanic at 5? Really? I do if I want the cert, and I want the cert . |

Because Minmatar ships smell like garbage, Amarr ships smell like incense and that stuff, Caldari ships smell like a hospital, and Gallente ships smell like French people.

Heck, I'm training Torpedoes 5 just for the certificate, even though I mostly fly cruisers.

Care to elaborate? Mechanics four gives access to t2 medium armour repair moduals and I really dont plan on being in a battle ship anytime soon.
Either way it's not that hard to get to 5 but does it belong in a standard cert or an elite one or the one in between those (I'm not to clear on how they level)? |

I just had to get the Core Competency Elite certificate (and Hull Tanking!), but other than that I've managed to stay clear of a 'certificates-addiction'. |

It's needed for the armor tanking certificates and the "hull tanking certificate", you want it at V because the more hullpoints you got the better. Especially if you got a Damage Controll. And you need if you want to go use Capital armor repairers. |

Repair systems is the skill for armour repairers and you need that only at lvl 4 for t2 large armour repairer. Mechanic 5 is just one of those core skils everyone should have, yes it increases your hull which might not seem all that awesome but it's a prereq for many things, including assault frigs and therefor hacs. |

You mean access to T2 large armor reppers. But yeah that was *my* reasoning behind it. Unless you've got money to spare on Blood/ Sansha etc. mods and don't mind risking them in PvP/E.

Right you need that and mechanics 4 inorder to run medium t2 armour repairers.
But I am discounting how useful the increase in hull HP is. I've had enough close calls to be sure you are right and that it is worth it for that alone.
Edit - Which just ends up making certs that much more tempting...

Hi, my name is Meissa Anunthiel and I nearly was certificate slave too.
I overcame that addiction by realizing that some of the prereqs do not make any sense.
Gunnery certificate requiring control bursts is one. If you're minmatar. Shield tanking certificates requiring the skill that prevents damage from going through to armor (eve down, don't remember the skill name off-hand) is another one. etc.
I'm curious as to what certificates have ridiculous/annoying prereqs...

IIRC, one armour tanking certificate did/does include shield skills...
Edit: I also think minmatar ones included controlled bursts. |

The shield skill you are thinking of is Tactical Shield Manipulation. Personally I love the skill, for armor tankers it extends the life of your armor tank, and for shield tankers, it extends the amount of time you can take punishment before you have to think about warping out to save on repair costs.
And DANG NABBIT! Does anyone remember when Projectiles and Missiles needed cap to fire? I have controlled busrts to 4 even though I can only use projectiles or missiles. Sweet Jebus, I feel old. ------------------------------------------------ SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RULES! |

I never got targetting to 5, which rules me out of Core Competency Elite, but it's next on my list of things I don't need (never had a problem with just 6 targets) but will train to claim the cert.
Plus, at nearly 70 mill skills I think my core competency should really be elite. I've got the SPs spread all over the place (236 skills).
Edit: Where's the Elite Honour Tanking certificate? |

I to am a cert-wh*** , but its good thing, this means I dont waste sp unless I am stupid enough to train for a sheild cert when i probs never even use sheilds, i think the one cert that apllies to armor and sheild tankers alike is the Logistics Cheif, it means you can use small to large t2 sheild and armor remote reps, which comes in handy tbh. Many of the skills aquired to following the certs will help you eventually if not now really, but who would not need mech 4, its basic LVL 5 skill that is mandatory tbh. Contolled bursts, hmm well what if one day you decide to been a amarrian ship with lazahs, you will see how helpful controlled burst are then |

I'm a slave to certificates, too.
The funny part is I've been playing EVE for a long time. Never new about certificates until I invited a RL friend to try Eve a couple oof months ago. After he went thru the tutorials and starting character mojo buddy commented "Cool game. I like that Certificate Planner." I'm like, "WTF...Certificate Planner???".
Now I'm hooked. Helps alot to have some focus in an otherwise vastly open sandbox really. |

Do you want Mechanic at 5? Do you want Electronics at 5? Do you want Engineering at 5?
The answer to all these questions is "yes". They all fall under the category of "support skills everyone should get to 5 early on". |
