I'm English, the Irish, Scottish and Welsh hate us.
Let them have their independence, I'm sure their economies will survive.
Also, it'll bring back all the Royal Navy ships from Faslane and help Plymouth not die a slow death. ---

Have you ever been to N. Ireland? I ,as an Englishman, was up there for the first time last year (in the marching season). I was on holiday from the ROI where I am living know. If anything, it would be more of a case of the Scottish, Welsh and English getting independence, and N. Ireland being the last bastion of Great Britain.
As to Scotland though, as a relatively objective Englishman, you would think they would be thinking again now that all the easy oil is pretty much gone, and what has happened to Ireland. In my experience, Scottish nationalists that I have met will argue endlessly on the politics/economics of the thing, but when it comes down to it it is a 'heart' thing.

Who are all these mysterious Scots?
Not only do I support them, I stood as a candidate from them in the regional elections in 1994 and got 3222 votes from your mysterious Scots.

We don't hate you, we just hate the attitudes that many of you have and the anglo-centric media.
For example, every four years there is so much hype that people seem to believe that England merely need to turn up and they will win the World Cup, so we take great pleasure in watching you crash out (Crybaby Gazza anyone?)
And of course, whenever an English athlete wins gold at the Olympics it's an achievement for England, but when a Scottish athlete wins gold it's an achievement for "Britain".
And of course, it would be such a "British" achievement if Andy Murray (a Scot) won Wimbledon, wouldn't it?
*rolls eyes*
Quote: Also, it'll bring back all the Royal Navy ships from Faslane and help Plymouth not die a slow death.
Well, the only ships at Faslane are submarines and very little else.
I don't think you would see Trident relocated to Plymouth as it's too exposed to the sea and not as easy to defend from attack.
You *want* your nuclear submarines to be in remote, deep water as it's a lot harder for an enemy to take them out.

Edited by: TimMc on 18/06/2009 09:35:58 Scotland costs more than they give the UK, but if they got independence they would just jump into bed with the EU. Instantly get a currency and free money. We would still need no passports to cross the border and they would still have no real political power since they are such a small country. Considering how small Wales and Scotland are population wise, they have been given alot of independence in the UK (I live in wales).
Edit: But my personal feelings are that I would prefer a united UK. Why? No real good reason besides we have so much history together.

I hope Scotland gets independance.
That would be an extra ú10,000,000,000 the english government will have to improve a country that deserves it. Too long have they scrounged off the English taxpayer whilst at the same time constantly abusing us. I for one would be glad to get rid of one of the most racist nations in existance (apart from Wales). Scotland is a third world country without England. Enjoy farming all that salmon sweaty socks!!!!

Aaaah, alt posters.
I would rather not see Scotland split from the UK. It makes no sense - we're all British, for a start. I classify myself more as a Northerner than English.
And I think the reason nobody is mentioning Murray as being Scottish is thanks to Monty Python's Flying Circus's s 20 minute long sketch that basically boils into a joke about how bad the Scots are at tennis... ________________________________________________

Oh dear, what a disgusting undertone. As for that 10 billion how about you give us the hundreds of billions back that you leeched from us in North Sea Oil revenues?
Back on topic. I believe Independance for Scotland will be a very bad thing I for one am 100% against it, but I have a feeling my fellow countrymen have not given the implications serious and proper consideration.
Yes I am Scottish and proud of it - but I don't hate englishmen- my best friend is in fact english.

Westminster doesn't want Scottish Independence for a few good reasons.
Britains mineral resources are disproportionatly in Scotland, the North Sea Oilfields and their taxes would go straight to Holyrood. On top of that, renewables are considerably more proffitable up here due to more consistent and higher speed winds, developing the wind alone could supply 60% of Britains energy supplies. This is accounting for pumped storage in the Highlands.
England by itself, has City of London. And the Car industry.
Don't get me wrong, I want to remain British, but don't take advantage of us by pillaging local resources for the exclusive benefit of Westminsters corporate buddies, you realise around 1/3 of Tax comes from Scotland via our oilfields? |

Drying up, but still enough to balance Scotlands books and pay for University and diversify the econemy should it go independent.
If that happens, England would slide into a depression due to the cost of paying Scotland for its energy. Haruhiists - Overloading Out of Pod discussions since 2007. Haruhiists - Supporting Linkification since 2008. |

I think it would be bad for both Britain & Scotland -particularly Scotland.
As for oil revenues -almost every nation state that relies on hydrocarbons screws over their people & the democratic process as it does not need the support of taxpayers.
The whole issue is being fuelled by cynical politicians/media who see it as as an easy hot-button issue for people who do not understand the full implications of such a change.
By all means celebrate your Scottish heritage & culture but don't let your pride be manipulated for the short-term gain of others.

tbh I look at my "scottishness" as what makes me british
we argue, hate it when the other nations does well at sports, but we still pull together when we need too.Anyone who belives that the UK would be better off divided up is kidding themselves.however I like the current devolution set up,it means in the highly likely event of a Tory goverment in the next uk election we have people who we actually elected looking after our own unique intrests and needs(diffrent education and legal system),unlike when Maggie thatcher was around.

It may seem like a good idea in theory, but given the current economic climate it would just be disastrous to say the least. While people are thinking "Woo, we are independent!" or "Woo, no more Scots!" there are so many underlying problems that need to be addressed which would either take years to sort or be financially mind-blowing, i.e. The British military, Many Scots are in regiments based in England vice-versa. Resources too. Given the worlds economic and political climate, Independence for Scotland does not seem viable. And that's coming from a Scot. And yes we can be racist, but remember, England practically enslaved Scotland and many many more around the world. Its not like the English are not racist towards Scots too you know. But if your English and "hate" Scots vice-versa, you yourself may have some English/Scottish blood in you with the amount of time our countries have have been United.

Aside from the practical complications of complete Scottish independence, I hope Scotland don't leave the union for sentimental reasons. Although I was born and raised in England, and I've only visited Scotland once, as someone whose parents were originally from the far flung reaches of the empire I identify more as British than I do English. The bottom line is that it was the BRITISH Empire, not the English Empire.
