A continuation on the House Davion/House Steiner conflict?
Oh yes.
Any idea which mech that foot belongs to. I don't think it's one of the chicken-mechs, but that still leaves a ton of different variants. Catapult is vastly superior to the Vulture, (however the Vulture, admittedly is very awesome, i'm fond of the mid-heavy mechs, as opposed to the super ones such as Atlas or Blood Asp).

FASA sold the rights to their games. Battletech went to Wizkids, FASA Interactive merged into Microsoft, and a relatively unknown company, Smith and Tinker bought the Mechwarrior video game rights.
As for the Catapult/Vulture debate, the Catapult was a fire support mech, it's main purpose was the LRM racks, but up close, it was weak. The Vulture had large lasers in addition to the LRM racks, making it a real threat. Not to mention that pretty much all Clan tech is superior to Inner Sphere. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Mech Warrior 4 was fuggin awesome. You have to get the Mech Paks innersphere/clan they add more Mechs to the game thus more chaos and destruction mwhahahah *evil laugh*
I would cry out in joy if a new mechwarrior is in the making I miss those games..

Smith and Tinker, it was mentioned in the Op's link, was created by the founder of FASA and original co-creator of Battletech, Jordan Weisman. so it's all good.
and was it just me.. or did MechWarrior 4 have vastly inferior graphics compared to Mech 3? (which even had you leaving mech footprints wherever you went). and obviously nothing can ever beat Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries.

The only game I ever really played in the Mech Warrior universe was the Mech Commander series, I liked that. Also remember having Mechwarrior 4 for a little while but couldn't get into it.
The series always struck me as more fun to imagine than to actually play. The mechs themselves are pretty cool I suppose but the games never really did them justice.

Mechwarrior 3 imo had better graphics than Mechwarrior 4. But Mechwarrior 4 was fun as hell to play online. I used to play it online for hrs at a time and then one day I signed in to find that I couldn't find any games to join thus resulted in the death of playing it online it was a sad day and I cursed Micro Soft for they ruined an awesometastic game.

I played MW3 and MW4 a bit, and while 3 wasn't too bad it didn't feel like it had as engrossing a story as the M2 games did. Mech 4 looked nice, but I felt like they really dumbed down a lot of the game and made it too arcade-y feeling. I loved being able to spend hours customizing mechs: adding heat sinks, allocating armor, weapons, jump jets, etc. While I like that Mech 4 tried to keep some things standard (it always seemed odd seeing autocannons fire out of my Mad Cat's LRM racks. =P ) I feel like they removed a lot of the customization in the process.
What would be neat is if (and this is purely speculation) if Mech 5 brought back that level of customization, and we could really see the advantages and disparities between IS and Clan Omnimechs. The appropriate Clan mechs could fit any number of weapons and be reflected correctly on the model, while more static IS designs would be limited in what they could fit (usually this is due to lots of body and other internally mounted weapons, see the IS Atlas for an example.) Obviously there would be exceptions to the rule...
Man, I want to get home and load up DOS box and pull out MW2 again....

MW4 did it to reduce the amount of graphical weirdness (like firing missiles out of guns or guns out of missile racks) and went with a limited modification model to support that. What I'm hoping for is that MW5 will have a more robust graphical engine where the weapon choices actually modify the way your mech looks (because that's what I expect from a 2009 high-budget game really). I want to actually see if it's a basic configuration Mad dog or the quite different threat of a Mad Dog A. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. Somehow I have to think about the people wanting to be put into Cryo Sleep.
They miss the correct time to be waked up, they land in the year 3050...
... only to be stomped by a hughe Mech-Foot at the very moment, they are revived and their Capsule opens.
And that is not even the worst, think about the endless of rows of Cryo-Capsules, full of people who want to be woken up when Duke Nukem Forever is released.

IGN Article
IGN Interview
This is looking exciting people, lot of new details. First off, this is a complete reboot of the genre, not a sequel. It takes place in 3015, which means NO CLAN TECH! Should make battles more interesting. Also it is coming out for PC and Xbox 360 (SUCK IT SONY). Plans include multiplayer with a 4 player coop (GLEEEE!).
Now the only thing that can kill it in my opinion is the publisher. They don't have one yet, but Pirahna has worked with EA in the past, so I fear that might come to pass. Here is hoping it won't. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Edited by: Regat Kozovv on 09/07/2009 15:09:54 Just finished reading the IGN interview. Very detailed. I was wondering about the simulation part, and I saw this:
Originally by: IGN "it's really got to go from arcade level controls to simulation level controls in an elegant unfolding of functionality. When people start, they need an entry point to be successful and have a great time without needing to have memorized lots of different controls, but you need to have it unfold for advanced players who want to micromanage."
I've been worried that this game was going to get the short end of the stick on PC, with simplified controls to cater to the console market. But it sounds like they're going to try and attempt a balance. That doesn't seem too bad.
I played Armoured Core 4 for the 360, and I was very surprised at the level of detail and customization that went into that game and what you could put into your mechs. If they retain that same sort of feel for Mechwarrior, I'll be pretty happy. =)

It appears to have an overall hit point system like MechAssault instead of HTAL (Head, torso, arms, legs) of the MechWarrior games of old. I hope that changes before release.
Also I hope that customization in the manner of MW2 is in, and not that silly ass slot system thing they introduced in later games. Oh yeah, bring back MASC.

I assume you are talking about the HUD in the trailer. If you read the article and interview, they said that will be changed, it was just quickly thrown together. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Bonus.
Mechwarrior 4 to be distributed free, and totally legal for once.
OK, it's gonna look dated, but it's not like it's costing you anything.
Here it will be SOONtm for those interested.
Can't wait for the new game, just hoping they don't just pander to the console heads and leave the PC release until months after X-box/PS 3. ___________________________________________________ The game will never be over, because we're keeping the meme alive. |

I have a question for you MW experts out there - my first encounter was MW2, in which many mechs changed their names. For example, the Mad Cat was known as the Timber Wolf, the Thor was previously called the Summoner - am I getting something confused?
Regardless, I have just watched the videos and am currently salivating like a dog for MW4, mech names be damned.

the names you see in MW4 are the nicknames gave by INS to the Clan Mechs. So the Timber Wolf is known as Mad Cat in Inner Sphere, same goes to the Summoner, which was named "Thor" by them Spheroids. ---

Going on the names, the Mad Cat was actually called that because it resembled a cross between the Marauder (MAD-3R), my favorite mech, and the Catapult. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Just created a Hamachi channel called "EVE Mechwarriors" and a corresponding in-game channel for coordination.
I am down to use the mektek patches or PR1, if we decide to use the mektek patches we can play online although they do add in a few weapons that a lot of people hate (I do not care, I just want to play).
I am down for some inner sphere VS. clan matches and any sort of themed/unthemed throwdowns. I imagine we can get some awesome fights if enough people join the channel.

When the Clans invaded the Inner Sphere, there were no communication between the two forces, none what so ever.. they just attacked. the INS-mech's computers, which in normal fights would tell its pilot what the enemy mech was loaded out with (based outward appearance, weight, and witnessed attacks so far) ... they had quite a few problems with the Clan Mechs, obviously. since they'd never seen anything even remotely like them. so the INS Mechwarriors had to basically turn off that part of the computer and just tell them to tag different mechs, and then the pilots gave them names.
the Summoner became Thor, because it used lightning(PPC) and thunder(AutoCannon) as its main forms of attack. and so both sides had their own names of the mechs.
if you want to know more, read the Blood of Kerensky trilogy ;)

CCP needs to license the MechWarrior MMO. EVE's customization would be awesome for a MechWarrior MMO - hi/med/low slots, IS/Clan components, power grid/cap, armor/structure, heat, salvage... it's all there. Just needs a new MechWarrior interface and art work.

but the way each thing works in both games are different though. And while customization is nice, I would rather they stick close to how things are in the story, there's a reason why clan mechs are more versatile, as most IS mechs are limited in customization.

The thing is. AFAIK Harmony Gold lost the rights to the original models to Big West/Studio Nue in 2002 and FASA made a deal with Big West about the so-called Unseen mechs, including the warhammer. Smith&Tinker acquired/leased the Mechwarrior license from FASA and Pirahna Games are thus making the Mechwarrior Reboot.

I cant believe they thought they could use that artwork after the ****ing lawsuit.. I know theres been some alternate artwork done for the Unseen mechs, why the hell dont they use that? Sure it looks different and some fans will whine, but at least they could have avoided another lawsuit. Absolutely everything is subjective. |

Edited by: Davina Braben on 08/09/2009 14:02:16 Because the "reseen" artwork looks like crap :D
It was never as simple as "Battletech stole" btw. Those news sites have got it wrong.
Harmony Gold made this hack job out several animu shows for the US market. That show was called "Robotech". It was made up of several animu shows like Macross.
They licensed the use original japanese designs in the US for their cartoon and related toys. OTOH they didn't get rights for model kits.
FASA acquired rights to the designs from another US company that had licensed them for model kits (because that's what they were using them for). The game was originally a set of rules for animu model kits I believe.
Wikipedia reckons the original legal courtroom drama started with FASA sueing Playmates over toys for the Exosquad show (Playmates had gotten a license for the Robotech stuff from HG but randoml stole a FASA original design). The whole "you used those licensed designs which we also licensed from someone else" thing was a counter-suit in response to that. It's wikipedia though so who knows.
In my considered opinion it's just HG being a bunch of ****s :(
Ah well. I guess they can rejig the designs a bit and keep them in.
In fact looking at the trailer again I'd say they already rejigged them some.

MW-5 will most probably SUCK like all other games released these days. 1 weekend and you've beaten the game. I want games THAT LASTS, games like X3 Terran Conflict. I beat MW4 in LESS THEN A DAY which proves my point. My friends beats games just as fast. We need games lasting longer.
And as i said. It will probably suck due to short lasting.
Less than a day. Even if a game is short i still take my time with it. I have rarely if ever finished it in a day. Think you are exagerating.
Unfortunately, people dont see the difference between finishing something on easy, and doing it right and winning on hard.
Even then, im somewhat of a perfectionist, if I can do something better, the chances are pretty good I will end up redoing it - especially if how well i do influences in any way the later missions.
Which is why i love stuff like x3 - if you do it right, there is no real loss, but doing it wrong could cost you tons in actual material and ships. And every single action you take influences the game..

I just hope I can customize an Uzial. Mix that with the experience bonus of flying a specific class and specific Mech and this game has real potential.
A happy gamer isnt on the forums, they are playing the game unless they have an idea that they honestly think is helping out. |

Now that I think about it that red mech is one of the Destriods with the exclaibur chassis instead of its standard. Only thing that mech didnt do is open its shoulders for the missile pods but it doesnt matter in functionality at the moment.
And the reason why the suit can still hold up after so many years is because there is a Robotech Live Action movie in the works.
Its stuff like this that gets our favorite stuff done entirely like all the transformers had to be newly designed to avoid a lawsuit with toy companies and amarr knows who else.
