Hi, cat here.
I was thinking earlier about various things in eve and I think it is getting pretty complicated. Apart from having to worry about pirates, there are hundreds of blueprints, skills, modules, solar systems, and ships etc. There are many more things that just make the game more complicated too lol i was just giving examples.
This is quite a lot for people to deal with. And now there are different sizes of rigs which could just boggle a players brain lol

Fortunately 90% of the Eve player-base is not weighed down by the presence of a "brain".

I think EVE is waaay complicated, but that's why I play it. And it's complicated because people control the game more than the devs.

Edited by: Joxiah on 20/08/2009 22:04:12 Honestly the reason I like it so much is I feel lost 90% of the time and the other 10% is me being excited because I figured it out. Dont change a thing as it brought thinking back to the gaming genre for me. Sometimes its better to be complicated than simple honestly. Nothing is impossible to figure out though.

Part of the reason the game is so much fun is its compexity. To suggest it is overly complex seriously makes me question if this is simply a troll post. I seriously can't beleive the OP is that devoid of intellect.

New players log in, and mine, rat, mission *****, or explore.
They do this for several months on average. Somewhere in there they try building something. They find out afterwards that it's just cheaper to buy from the market from someone who's already done all the hard work of collecting and researching everything.
After they get bored of Carebearing alone, they join a corp. From then on it's steady progression in knownledge based on the person's curiosity.
I know folks who've lived in 0.0 for over 5 years and STILL don't know about the aggro mechanics, timers, production tree's, the difference between meta levels and so on.
EVE is just like real life.
You can just coast through experienceing just a part of it, or you can explore and learn a lot.

Don't worry, most things are actually rather simple. It's mostly a matter of plugging unit a with unit b, or multiple units a, b, c, d together pushing a few buttons and waiting. Value gets determined by who decides their time is the most useless while the rest of us rage and try to get more profit.

Is not complicated itÆs just an endurance of a complicated game. Since the learning curve is planed to be over 50 years non-stop playing (subscription).
But of course you would eventually die before that happens and if you donÆt die then EVE would die before reaching 50 y old.

EVE only seems complicated due to the fact most gaming has been dumbed down. When you look back at games like Rules of Engagement 2 and Hearts of Iron just to name two EVE seems pretty simple.
In fact some times I wish it was a bit more complex. I would love a combat madel that made use of shield and weapon facings, allow component damage as well as more complex energy managment. That would open a ton more tactical options.
The complexity of EVE. even the so called learning cliff have more to do with the laziness of gamers today than the complexity of the game. |

I think OP has a point, in that the game is presented in a pretty confusing way much of the time, especially in the way the market is arranged for example. If I had my way, when you go to ships, you are presented with a list of hull types, which expands into the variations (for example you click ships, expand battleships, under which comes tech 1, marauders and black ops). I would also have each module expand to present its variations, rather than lumping them all into one category.
So probably Cat it would have made more sense to say eve is too confusing, rather than too complicated, and should be presented in a manner that's easier to understand - especially for poor newbs.
If however I am wrong and you are actually saying stuff should be taken out of eve to make it less to have to grasp |

EVE has been for the better half of 5 years a coders dream, a simulator, a micromanaging nightmare and so forth.
Lately, past year or so, CCP has finally gotten the game in such a state, that they're starting to put the GAME into the game.
5 years of engine/system creation/tweaking is, in my opinion as a game dev, very risky, but at the same time, one of the most intriquing and innovative ways to create a MMO. |

On my eyes. Eve is still TOO SIMPLE!!! If i wanted somethign stupid and simple I would play Wii. Complexity is what keeps people more time in the game sicne there sia lways more to learn and try.
Xomplexity is also the only way to include some player skils (miknd skills) on an MMO. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

Steep learning curves are what make this game great.
And, to be honest, said learning curves allow for great profit-making opportunities, too.
Well, for me, anyway.
Maybe that "other" yet-to-be-released CCP game product we're not allowed to mention in GD will allow for a lower learning curve and cater to those with the "MTV generation" attention span of a goldfish.

you know a gm asked me if i thought eve was too complex back in 05 when i was in the last days of my trial, i told him no, yes it is complex and you can learn something new every day, but i did the training noob stuff flew around got lost in space, wandered into low sec when rats guarded the gates, i ran fast as i could back to the gate to get aways in my noobie frig.
back then the tutorials taught me how to fly my ship, how to shoot things, how to mine, and when in doubt right click, and probably a few other things, beyond that i had a brain that i could figure stuffs out. and when i got a corp i had people i could learn from since some of them were old schoool launch day players.
now days you got tutorials on just about every basic in eve, you got corps like eve university, you got well forums that you can try and use if you can put up with the flames and take stuff in good humor and get a few legit answers. eft, evemon, and bunch of handy utilities that can aid your planning and decisions, yea there is stuffz to figure out and stuffz to learn and stuffz you will learn new just about every week month or day you play.
so no its not TO complicated learn the basics and you can go from there with anything long as your willing to learn.

Do we really still need named Tech 1 modules? Particularly if there's nothing in the name to suggest its connection with the basic level Tech 1 module or to differentiate the Meta 2 from the Meta 4 Tech 1 module?
That was the single most confusing thing when I started the game.
If absolutely need Meta Level 2-5 Tech 1 modules, The names should be something like "Neutron Blaster Cannon I/M4" rather than "Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I".

Why don't we just gives them different colours... like Grey for meta 1, White for meta 2, Green for meta 3 and Blue for meta 4.
Faction stuff could be... purple... Officer stuff could be... orange?

Edited by: Neesa Corrinne on 21/08/2009 15:21:55 I play two MMO's concurrently. I play EVE most of the time and I play Age of Conan on raid nights or when I want completely mindless, risk free PVP.
Whenever I mention EVE on my AoC vent channel I'm almost flamed out of the room for even mentioning "that slow, boring, extremely complicated game". You know what? GOOD! Most of those guys are NOT people I would want to see playing EVE in the first place.
The best part about EVE is that it really weeds out the ADD crowd by denying access to instant godlike power, and through the risk of loss. The first time some kid gets his shiny toy taken away by another kid, he usually doesn't want to play that game anymore. Adults, on the other hand, realize that loss is a part of life, they cope with it and get back in the game with the intent of taking someone elses shiny toy the next time. ---------------------------------

You know how genius games like Chess and Poker are easy to learn/hard to master? EVE is opposite of that. hard (and long) to learn, easy to master. ___________

What did the scarecrow say? "If I only had a ... ", something, I forget...
I think people confuse "complicated" with tedium. EVE's form of "complicated" feels really, really tedious; not fun at all. Unnecessary complication in an environment in which we are supposed to play is something I try to avoid.
Realizing that the sigma electron resonance clouds in the hydrophobic pockets of tubulin proteins contained in hyper-neuronal structures of the central nervous system connect us to the quantum field, thus enabling consciousness in three dimensions, THAT is complicated in a fun way, worth fully investigating.
Figuring out the standings system is just a pain in the rear : not fun at all. As is the case for many of the tedious topics in EVE.
In my opinion, EVE's perceived complexity amounts to nothing more than mental mass turbation.
Eve is the only game I know that I can just fly about in me space ship and blow things up while doing dishes/laundry, reading, playing paper based D&D, etc. That's why I like it. Why do people feel they need contrived, tedious, [so called] complexity to feel they are having challenge based fun ?
Yes. EVE is too complicated to be called fun. If you seek a real fun-based mental challenge, go play chess, or design and build a 25-step wooden puzzle box.

No, hard coded skill training is the only feature of Eve that is aimed at casual gamers.
Character skill points is not the definition of progress in this game. You can have 60 million skill points but not make any progress in the game because you dont have the time or ability to learn it all. Therefore time and ability are the real limiters for progress. You get skill points for free from the moment you sign up to play.

Learn what? I 'learned' everything there was to know in a weekend. Eve is not complicated to anyone with above average IQ. Which is most of us. The only part of the game I didnt 'learn' from google was ship fitment for pvp not pve. And even that can be had on battle clinic. In fact the argument that eve is complicated seems to come from people who are ignorant not stupid. How many people can't use google to find information on game features? Or how many can't be bothered? Right. So 'not for the lazy and ignorant' is a more apt. description than 'complicated'.
As for casual, the entire level of participation you enjoy in the game is dictated by skills. Therefore eve is an entirely casual game as grind is not productive. Unless you consider isk grinding fun - I don't personally.

So if by complicated you mean too complex for stupid people, then yeah, sure. As for casual, the entire level of participation you enjoy in the game is dictated by skills. Therefore eve is an entirely casual game as grind is not productive. Unless you consider isk grinding fun - I don't personally.
Perhaps you started the game when it was simple. The first version of Eve didnt even have battleships. It had tech 1 cruisers, frigates and haulers as I remember it. I didnt have any problems learning it myself, but today its more complex than it was back then. The game has evolved and become more difficult to learn quickly. There are many more variables to everything, from fitting ships, to pvp, to market dynamics, to 0.0 colonization - everything has gotten more complex. Of course you see this, but you enjoy feeding the ego by thinking you are above average and everybody else are not as smart as you. :)
Eve is not really for above average intelligence players. Its just like any other mmorpg where all you need is lots of time to get somewhere. One big difference with Eve though that I really like is that personality matters. If you are a risk taker, you can really reap the fruits or suffer in ways not possible in other mmorpg's.

Eve is pretty simple really. Just spend about 5 hours a day researching the development, fixes and various mechanics, and in 4 years you might have a broadly good understanding of 2 or 3 elements of the game.

As someone said the naming convention is the most confusing and fiddly. Before I found the compare button (which is well hidden) I was totally lost on modules. This button should be on the main screen. This is nothing to do with complicated, its to do with bad presentation and UI. Considering how important something like that is for a new player top learn CCP are, as usual, expert in hiding it.
The worst teacher can make a simple subject unlearnable and I consider CCP to be bad teachers that should be put out to grass.
EDIT: And the use of English is often unclear or confusing as well, even if strictly correct, I assume due to translation. This is throughout the game though, not sure it can be fixed.

The reason I love this game is because it's 'difficult'. That was my major problem with WoW back when I played, everything is so darned simple. Here there's just so much to figure out, so much to do, so much to experience. I hope it stays this way, as far as I'm concerned add more depth, more options, more difficulty!
