The silly thing is that xenophobia always had a strong evolutionary purpose and it's part of our genetically anchored behavior. It governs the natural selection between groups. This made me lol a little since the lack of response kinda showed that not to many from the deep south have participated in this conversation. You tell most southerners you're from texas, and they'll ask you how life is way out west. I grant it was part of the confederacy and all... but tbh, texas isn't usually thought of as part of the south... maybe that's why they coined the term "deep south" :) keeps it exclusive.

Check your history, that war you are refering to wasnt racially motivated. It was started over state's rights, import tariff's and sectionalism. However because slavery is a very emotional subject and the emancipation proclamation was signed after the war was over people mistakenly assume that the war was fought over the issue of slavery. While slavery was one of the motivating issues for the souths secession it was not the only or the main one.

I told them afterwards that as long as you guys keep calling each other ****s and we hear it often on tv and in music some people like him with a little shorter social antenna than most will think that using the N word towards you is ok..Also without thinking that it is a word with a ugly history behind it.. I think you were unlucky and met one of those guys..
