Edited by: Michwich on 28/08/2009 15:22:51 Im finding my options kinda limited in this game, the only reason I find myself playing is to wait for a skill to train to see if it gets any funner. I know it would be funner with friends or a group but so is every ****ty activity. My question is, what do you solo players do for fun? Id rather not PVP because its too expensive, and from what Ive tried solo pvp doesnt work well in the game, plus Im not really into emo pvp, im more of a arena style sports pvp guy but I wouldnt mind trying it if it didnt take a week of grinding to do it enough where you can get comfortable. So no PVP. I tried mining that was boring, I tried exploring that was fun but tediouse and not enough rewards. I tried running through 0.0 , had some fun with that until it hit me there wasnt much profit in smack talking emos. So these days Im finding my options pretty limited to mining, or npc ratting. Id try some missions but for some reason my sec status wont let me contine with the story line. So what do you solo players do for fun in this game?

Edited by: Zartanic on 28/08/2009 15:36:32 Although I solo myself no MMORPG is a solo game, especially EVE, and solo will eventually get boring unless our like me an enjoy doing stupid things solo players are not supposed to do.
There are many corps out there who will accept a casual lone player style, maybe join them for a start. IF you don't like it then just leave the corp.
In the meantime try scanning and Wormholes/exploration sites or DED complexes in low or null sec.

EVE was never designed for solo play. There are a lot of things you can do solo, but none of them are very exciting. Since it is an MMO, the focus for fun is in found in that acronym.
You could get a second account, and roleplay your own corporation with people inside it.
If you're really averse to interacting with other human beings, you could always aspire a career as a spook. It'll mean dealing with people, but on your terms, and once the job is done you can party on your own and get all delirious about it as there is nobody you can tell that you can consequently leave alive.

Hmm thats unfortunate because this game has the potential to be a real good solo freindly mmo imo. I know many of you play games soley for the social aspect of them, but there are many that dont, infact more than do apparently since the trend in mmo's has been toward more solo friendly content because people just flat out rejected games with group heavy content. Hence the need for solo friendly activities in THIS game.

I have been playing since 05, I have 4 accounts, income is around 1.5 Bill per week. Joined a corporation in my first month, quit a week later and never looked back.
You don't need to be tied by an umbilical to other players to enjoy Eve,
I run lvl 5 Missions, build my own ships, trade, invest in Ipo's/bond issues etc. What most people forget is that to do all those activities relies on interaction with other players.
Tying yourself to a group is entirely optional.
Is anyone suggesting that most famous of solo players, Chribba, doesn't enjoy his game? or doesn't interact with thousands of other players during his "solo" activities?
Most people cant function without constant direct support from others, its human nature to congregate in groups/gangs etc. but that doesnt mean we all have to be "Sheep" herded by Ceo sheep dogs.
To the Op, you sound like your a group orientated player who has found himself out in the cold and is lost, I never had any problems finding many things to do in Eve right from the time I left that first corp nearly 4 years ago. Set yourself goals and work your way toward them. If you cant find anything interesting to do using your own initiative then you will just have to find a corp and let them lead you by the nose, They will always find a task to keep you busy.

EVE was made to be a griefers paradise. Finding different ways to gank/scam/grief people can be very entertaining and fullfill the need to ruin someone's day. It's even encouraged in EVE. I would suggest you go over to the dark side.

You *can* solo in Eve. I wont bother listing stuff to do as you've already mentioned you didn't enjoy some of the things I do, and others have posted stuff you can do.. whatever.
I just wanted to chime in with "Just because it's an MMO doesn't mean you have to play WITH other people.. only that you have to play AGAINST other people."

I agree with this guy. While you CAN play EVE and not engage in PVP, I find it to be quite pointless. PVP is what EVE was made for. It's what the game is all about. --

The Op is looking for a game to lead him by the nose. There are a few out there who cater to the ultra casual. To me the solo parts of EVE are vast and obvious but maybe to others they are not.
Lets see what you can do solo:
1. Play the market 2. Research 3. PVP 4. Exploration 5. Missions (Missions are designed for solo) 6. Wormholes - these give several solo opportunities including leading to low/null sec, PVP, exploration sites, good loot. WH's are a solo players dream as they do not contain bubbles and gate camps. 7. Scanning/expeditions 8 Build your own POS (can be done) 9 Mining (boring though solo) 10 Manufacturing 11 Invention 12 Any of the numerous 'grief' type activities such as scamming or ninja salvaging
Then you have the ones you work out for ourself such as challenges. Maybe try and live in low sec for a while or low/nul sec mission running.
There's probably more but I play solo and I'm always busy with a ton of stuff I have not done yet.
Other games give you an easy and obvious target to aim for which for me is boring as those games also restrict you, EVE does not. In WOW I had to make up my own challenges as I was getting bored to hell with the spoon fed content. But WOW is not designed for that, EVE is. So think of something to do that is hard and work towards it. Make your own challenges and fun, its what EVE is all about.
My aim is to build a one man POS in WH space. I will probably fail horribly but its fun working my way to it.

Edited by: Arakash Mond on 28/08/2009 16:21:49 I would suggest acquiring another account and then grouping with yourself. This way you avoid interactions with other people and yet you get to group with the person you most enjoy spending time with. I have tried it, pretending to not know what my group mate (myself) is doing or thinking. Sort of like a ventriliquist act if you will. I enjoyed it for a while especially PvPing with the dreaded solo pirates who try to sneak up on barge's innocently mining away in low sec space. What they didn't realize was that my group mates (me) BS was hidden away waiting for them. Once though my group mate did'nt respond at all due to some personal differences between us and we parted ways Good luck

Trade. A solo player, willing to take some risk can make a lot of ISK, and you do not need a big ship to do it. In fact, a little ship is better for some kinds of things.

I wasnt aware this game was for groups only since I had no problem playing this game solo but I feel the options are limted for that style of play. Im not hearing any suggestions that I havent already done before in my short time playing so Ill take that as evidence toward the argument.
"emo PVP" is a word i like to describe the style of PVP in this game, theres no slip, you can call it what youd like but please dont call it PVP. Id like to differentiate soemhow from more skillfull forms of PVP, youre talking to a former Duke3D and Quake champion. However the style of PVP is directly tied to the whole solo unfriendly nature of this game and now that I think about it could be an area where It could attract that style of player. In the form of arena style pvp matches.
Imagine space arenas where corp sponsored teams fought for money and fame and where spectators could watch and wadger on the matches. The point being theres a system that lets casual players participate in something that otherwise would require a group to do. Guild Wars has "random" arenas where youre randomly put on a team for pvp matches. Then theres "team" arenas where teams interested in organization can form prior to the matches.
Thats just one idea for more casual/solo friendly things to do and what other games have already done to fill that player need. Theres no reason why this game cant do the same.
And the low sec status, well some chick wanted me to pod her in rancer one saturday night, and being a pod virgin i couldnt resist. Turned out she was in my npc corp and I caught some bad security status. But seriousely the sec status and corp status is so convoluted , hows a noob supposed to know any better. For the longest time I thought low sec was where you were supposed to pvp.

Edited by: Saartje Sarel on 28/08/2009 17:16:32 without resorting to flippancy, eve is very much a team game. unfortunately, a lot of the atmos within the game comes accross as being individualistic or solo-nerd. this is because, sadly, most geeks, nerds, gimps, asperger's drones, weird beards and sociopaths are also social ******s.
unfortunately the game was designed for people slightly better socially adjusted than the vast majority of fat middle aged virgin weirdos who populate it. therefore some creativity is neccessary to build anything fun and lasting - see goo(d)swarm as the template on how to make a corp into something insanely effective simply by not recruiting the weird bastards who frequent high sec.
that said the pve end of the game is rubbish, I agree and the people who find it fun, once or twice are fine by me. the freaks who log in 5 hrs a day to do nothing but missions are evidently undiagnosed autistic freaks. nuff said.
you might find this is a trend among most mmo players and thankfully, eve is one of the few that doesn't cater entirely to their tastes. so there is at least SOME competition and some variety and groups of intelligent and motivated people WITH charisma and social/communication skills can do very very well in a short space of time.
if none of that makes sense or appeals to you, I suggest you email david braben and tell him to get a ****ing move on. I would but he already took out a court order against me and I'm only sixteen weeks into my parole.

It's plenty exciting, just not very worthwhile.
Exploration might be cool, but i'm expecting that to only be profitable in 0.0 space, which means indentured servitude to an Alliance to do solo stuff.

Anything that you can do solo will eventually get boring. There is very little that you can do without any interaction with other players though.. If you sell your mission loot to market, you are selling to other players.. Try not to fight it. Just play along. Try to find a cool and fun corp and try to accomplish something.

No it does not mean that. I do null sec with no problems at all, no sovereignty issues.
Also Op, you said you have tried all solo content, you have not, see my list. If you do not like any of it then this is not the game for you.
This game has a ton of solo content, but you seem to happily ignore that fact. The solo content could be better but your saying its limited, its not.
If there is a problem with this game is players seem reluctant to try something out. That's because everyone's experience in this game is not the same (unlike other games) so opinions vary a lot and its easy to pick posts, like many here, who state being in a corp is the only way to go. That's plain wrong.
Coros certainly are the way to go but that's true of ALL mmorpg's and always will be, its what they are all about or you may as well play normal games. Try doing a high end raid solo in WOW or even any instance. The whole point of MMORPG's is you get to see it all if your in a corp, but that does not mean there is not plenty to do if your not. Just don't sit there expecting it to be thrown at you.

Heh, priceless.
Hate to break it to you, but around these parts we don't equate a fast twitch response and the ability to bunny hop with skill at PVP activities. EVE combat is a bit more involved than that.
To do EVE PVP poorly only requires you to hit Orbit followed by F1,F2, etc. To do it well requires much, much more. Perhaps if you got out of your Empire war deccing corp (I'm not going to make any of the obvious assumptions about who your primary targets have been) and start tangling with people that actually know how to conduct combat operations you would discover that you have actually only scratched the surface of what combat in EVE has to offer.
However, you appear to think you've already seen it all, so... have fun whatever you end up trying next.
*Edit: Just so there is no confusion, running solo through 0.0 as fast as you can smack talking does not = PVP either.

A. anything you like. PVP doesnt have to be expensive, war doesnt have to be gang-orientated, missions dont have to be about YOUR sec status, ISK generation doesnt have to be about obvious. Try harder. cruiser & rig BPOs LDS kb |

A solo player in eve can:
1. Mine high sec 2. Become a trader 3. Ninja salvage (and ore theivery if you want to work some pvp in ^__^) 4. Solo pvp, yes it still exists, they've been saying its dead for the last 4 years, ive not checked recently, but its still existed every other time they said its dead, i can only imagine the new cheaper rigs is a boon for solo pvp. Fly minmatar. 5. Run missions 6. You could join FW and tag along 7. Sit in jita trying to sell ravens for the price of CNRs 8. You could check out that one thread with the guy whos apparently set up a 0.0 trade hub for newbies. 9. Ship spinning. 10. Forum posting while watching your SP count go up, thats what most of us do here i think.

If you are solo player, W T F are you doing in MMORPG? Just buy the latest best selling boxed game and there you go.....

problem is, there aint really a single-player "boxed game" like eve. closest would propably be x3, but then its very limited, and it has very ugly tubes connecting your stuffs.

You feel your options are limited because THEY ARE limited. As in any MMO, there are things that are simply too difficult to do solo. You can't solo a 1000 man fleet for example. If you want to not have your gameplay options limited by playing solo, you have to play a game designed for specifically for solo play.

"emo PVP" is a word i like to describe the style of PVP in this game, theres no slip, you can call it what youd like but please dont call it PVP. Id like to differentiate soemhow from more skillfull forms of PVP, youre talking to a former Duke3D and Quake champion.
That's not real pvp any more than chess is real pvp. If there are no consequences, then it's not pvp, it's fluffy bunny pretend pvp with kiddie gloves. If someone shoots you dead, so you hit the spacebar and respawn somewhere else in the combat zone fitted and ready to kill, that's not real pvp. Spending hours or days saving up for a pvp ship and getting it blown up under you, and knowing the only way to get another ship like that is to safe up for hours or days again, that's pvp. Going about your merry way with a feeling of security isn't pvp. Going about your merry way paranoid that someone could suicide gank you at any time for the billions of isk valued goods in your cargohold, that's real pvp.

please no. If you want sterile quake FPS style pvp, go play. There's nothing stopping casual players from flying around and pvping. The only way I could accept something like this is if you still have to buy your ship, and you don't win until you pod the other. --

If you don't know what to do as solo player allready, you fail as solo player, so gtfo tbh.
Common misconceptions found in this thread though: 1) not being in a corp/alliance = not interacting; 2) PVP = player killing (only). Both are a sign of failing to understand the concept of 'sandbox gameplay'.
There are plenty of solo players in the game, and some of them have been playing since forever. As someone who has been in both sides on the fence and usually changing position, from my experience corps worth being there, usually are demanding in time requiered to play, and sometimes you just don't have the time, so I've gone months from playing 'solo' (various accounts, tbh) to periods of corp life.
There are plenty of things to do as 'solo' player, at almost all levels of the game, if you have some imagination. WIS is an expansion which allows EVE players to wear leather and walk around stations.
Dust514 is a console shooter/rts which will tie into EVE and affect sov. |

This game is sub-par when it comes to PVE activities, and this game is definitely not a solo game. Groups will always gank solo ships, and otherwise all activities require interaction with the social group that is the other players. You're either ****ing with people on the market, or on the forums, or in-game; this whole game is about meta-gaming and social interaction.

I see similar comments here all the time, but it ain't that simple.
Over the years I have had or been in several corps. Eventually (usually sooner) they all died, or became zombie corps. The reason I think is the way EVE is setup does not encourage actually playing, but logging on for a few minutes each month to update skill training.
One corp I was in a couple years ago had over 400 members on the roster, but even on a busy night it was rare to find more than 15 or 20 online - and of those half or more were afk. Contrast that with almost any other popular MMO, where actives is typically 3 to 6x as high.
There is a period in EVE - I think around the 4 to 8 month range - where skill training becomes the only reason to login, and that is where a lot of people just give up. The Cariest of CareBears |

Originally by: Michwich Hmm thats unfortunate because this game has the potential to be a real good solo freindly mmo imo. I know many of you play games soley for the social aspect of them, but there are many that dont, infact more than do apparently since the trend in mmo's has been toward more solo friendly content because people just flat out rejected games with group heavy content. Hence the need for solo friendly activities in THIS game.
Guild Wars went along these lines, first with 'heroes', and then further when they gave assassins the shadow-form skill. So if you weren't into watching npc's duke it out, or being a SF assassin or support for him, you were just SOL. Maybe ArenaNet did get more customers doing that, but of course you never hear from the customers they lost. They lost me, and I'd played since beta.

Then what? Candy Corns and mini-pets? Arena matches in Eve, seriously? Always knowing where your opponent is and what he's likely bringing? No risk of losing a ship or pod? Not having to wonder if his buddies are near or if he's about to drop a cyno on you?
We have it better right now. God I wish I could gank someone walking out of Lion's Arch.

Somehow I always find something to do when playing alone. This goes same for me irl as well. My only problem is that there are 24h in a day and not like 72 or better 96 ... that would be so awesome ... and 300 year life span
Point being is that this really depends on the player - it depends on what sort of things you find fun as well as on your ingenuity, ability to come up with fun activities given all the tools that the game gives you.

Edited by: Zartanic on 29/08/2009 10:09:15 There are good reasons why people may solo but there are no good reasons why they should moan that a MMO provides no solo content. MMO's are for player interaction, its the whole point of them.
The great thing about EVE is you interact with players all the time with no effort, by playing the market of just watching your back. Other games don't have that.
The reason other games have to be more 'solo friendly' is because there is no motive for interaction at all outside raids and players tend to play for one thing which is gearing themselves up. There is no other purpose to the game. In EVE there are a much wider variety of reasons to group up and interact.
The reason I solo is I was an Officer or leader for years in another game and have had my share of working hard to provide others with their fun and dealing with drooling idiots, emo's and selfish bastards. EVE gave me a break from all that. Its nice to be alone and without anyone bothering you. EVE is great for that while you can still interact. There is a lot of solo content, unlimited really, just some are crap at seeing it.
To get the best out of this game you can't be lazy. Lazy players tend to rely on others to provide them with entertainment, so they join corps or guilds and moan for what they want. If a lazy player is solo they may as well leave the game.

Hmm pvp in mmo is by definition NOT singleplayer even when played solo.. Anyways there are times when i want do things alone and there are times when i want join others, just like in real life. Problem is that eve is very hostile to newbies and biggest mistake newbie can ever make is join big corp, chanses are he get bored and quit

ull need a tidy ship 1 that can warp cloaked and use scanner ( recon ) live life day to day find new wh exploit the ppl that live there move on
or can use a black ops and av alt prober find the sites when system quite park said BO and wait
can trade and market pvp which id think is a solo activaty as ppl are to tight to share
make a 1 man corp and war dec a random allaince every week
dont limit your self to beeing solo tho wot any pod pilot needs in eve is the abilty to adapt
av fun

Michwich,
Play the game anyway you want. I do both group play and a lot of solo play. Contrary to what many here have said, Eve can be played quite well solo, but you give up a lot of things to do if you choose a solo life. If you are solo it helps to have more than one account. With multiple toons, you can do just about anything you want.
The great thing is when you tire of solo play, go join a corp (or start your own) and expand your playing options. Although I am in empire now, I have spent a lot of my time in 0.0 space with different great corps. With wormholes now an option, you really can't have an excuse for getting bored in eve. Lots to do when you vary your play. And when you do get bored, take a break, trust me, you will come back to Eve.....
