As you know, it's not a good idea to be wandering around in 0.0 unless:
A) You've got permission from those that control that area, or B) You've trained up enough to beable to go in Ninja style or can fight/run well, or C) You're just there to learn from it, expecting to die a lot, heh.
W Space seemed great at first as nobody controlled anything there. It was still a bad idea for a noob or carebear to be running around in one, as they'd quickly find themselves podded by more experienced players that also happened to wander in, or by the Sleepers themselves.
Several months ago, my old CEO decided he wanted to set a POS up in W Space (he was POS obsessed, which stemmed from the fact he wanted to "own" a piece of space in Eve somewhere, but was a noob himself). His corp was a small one, full of noobs (including me at the time), and we set up a large tower, and made it like the Death Star with as many weapons as you can imagine. 'Course this left little room for things like a Intense Refinery or Reactors for doing anything like serious mining the ABC ores or gas clouds. The Ironic thing is, mining is what he really wanted to do. After a while, I and others in the corp were bored to tears. Bored, or screaming like little kids due to being undertrained in PVE ships and being ganked by more experienced PVP'ers (I think they thought we were a dream come true for them, hahahah!). Bottom line was: myself and others in the corp were tired of constantly being broke, pod killed, and not being able to train up on things. So we left his corp.
We formed our own little Carebear corp in hi sec, started mission grinding, mining, and actually getting trained up on things. We finally hit lvl 4 missions, and finally started making money (most of us are poor in RL and don't have the spare change to buy PLEXs all the time). So finally with money to blow, some of us, like me, started buying cheap frigs and cruisers and poking our nose in low sec here and there, learning from being killed, and I've had many teachers more than happy to show me how the ropes work there while joyfully killing me, hehehehe.
In the mean time, some of us have been thinking about going W Space diving, now that we know how to do a little bit of pvp better, etc, etc. One of the things we thought of doing was setting up a small tower pos as a "Base Camp" simply there to store stuff and for those that wanted to mine the ABC ores until it could be hauled out.
So I threw my probe scanning alt into a wh system. It was a class 2, no pos's were there, thought to myself: "Cool. Okay, we'll check it again tomorrow." Next day, there were a swarm of ships in the system. Curious, I kept myself cloaked and watched the Known Space wh. Nope, they were not coming from there. Instead, they were going in and out of the other wh leading to another W Space system. During the day, they set up a large tower, complete with weapons, etc, etc. So okay, this system is a bust for us, time to get out, as I know they ain't going to take to kindly to us setting up a small pos. I then put myself in a 2nd W space system. It was empty, and the very next day, bingo, a swarm of ships, coming from the wh leading to another W Space system, and they also set up a large pos. They were a different corp though. Hrmmmm, I thought. So put myself in yet another W-space system. This time I actually got to the part where I was setting up a small pos. I had only gotten it online and anchored 2 bays, when another corp came in. Of course they took out the POS, and then set up their own in the system. Where did they come from? From the wh leading to another W Space system.
So my small corp will mostly be just doing raids on W systems for now, but it does look like people are colonizing W Space....and quickly right now. These ain't noobs either, they are mostly veteran players.
So what y'all think? Is W Space starting to turn into 0.0 space? Kinda curious.

I guess only CCP can definitively answer how many POS are anchored in the ~2500 W-space systems. Could be that you just had a run of bad luck.

short answer: yes it is. and i think that should not be possible. CCP themselves said they didnt mean to wormholes to be colonized but seems they are been colonized very heavily atm.. so please ccp make it so that it is impossible to anchor pos in wh space thank you. it will make game more fun for everybody.

S/he's right though. CCP Never intended Wormholes to be Settlements. You are simply supposed to go in, do some sites and move onto the next wormhole. As it is now, people Go in, drop POS and log in for an hour or two to farm what is spawned, then log onto alts to carry the stuff to jita to sell, and bring the alts back. If no empire/reliable route wormhole exits are spawned they horde at the POS and log off till tomorrow.
And the best part is, most of the time people opt to leave the POS behind since its more valuable to carry more salvage than that 200m tower out, Ever tried taking a POS out without capitals? yeah... _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Yah, with 2500 W systems, It could have been just a string of bad luck. We didn't want to put something perminate up, lord no! We had enough of that with our last CEO. It was a nightmare trying to keep a large pos fueled like that.
So far I was lucky (VERY lucky, I just got my Orca out of there this morning, while the other corp was logged and asleep...whew! I almost wet my pants when I jumped in with the Orca yesterday and was locked up! hehehehehe, But hey, this is Eve! Anything can happen!). But after talking it over with my guys, we've decided to just do one day raids on w-space here and there. Ninja mining and ratting in low sec (That's fun most of the time, and definately more interesting than mission grinding). I mean, yah, we're Carebears, but I guess someone snuck something in our food, as we're starting to grow claws and craving meat here and there, hahahahahah! ). In other words, we don't scream and cry when someone nails us on something (scam/gank, etc). We might be annoyed, but then we learn from it and either watch for it, or use it ourselves!
But yah, you CAN colonize W space if you have enough manpower and don't mind having to haul the fuels.

Explored 5 wormholes in a row and 5 were colonized. Statistically this does not look good. It's become like 0.0 without all the hassle with sovereignity and so on. You don't feel like you're exploring wormhole space when you can barely move for all the POS'ses littered around. --- Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? Yeah, it's pretty much 0.0 - don't worry though. Wormhole corporations are a lot weaker than the ones you'll find in nullsec. And if the bastards didn't charge so much for T3 ships, I wouldn't have to rob so gosh darn many of them.

I doubt its as bad as his story because i have trouble finding a system with a POS in it, last few ones i've probed out from our WH haven't had towers in, a small POS is a really bad idea because they can be taken out by just 2 ships (trust me i've done it) so a medium is a minimum because then you can mount a decent defence of the tower and small gangs aren't likely to harass a medium tower, WH space is going to be a mirror of k-space just without gates so its harder to move around and you're not always likely to come in to contact with another player :P
Bestt bet for small corps is stick to the low end class 1/2's as people underestimate those and mostly ignore them, only visitors i get are of the cov ops variety and they tend to die fast to a sabre ;)
We have had a few idiots in BS warp to our POS but they didn't last long, its all about the setup and without sharing details i think our setup works well :)

You misunderstood my post. I'm not complaining, but was wondering if w space is being occupied.
Our pos was just going to be a temp thing, like when you mountain climb, you set up a base camp along the way. Just there for a day or so. And if you'd read the post you'd have seen that, yah, we're just going to dive in and out of the wh systems and not bother with a pos at all now.

W-space is carebear heaven, which attracts piwates, which attracts the PvPers.
It's better than nullsec, since you don't have to worry about someone hot-dropping a titan on your head, just because they happen to have 20 of them in the constellation.

I'm under the impression that a lot of lower class WH systems are being populated. The ones that link off of high and low sec directly. However the higher class ones we have found to be pretty sparse still.
The difference is that in the lower class ones a few people CAN do everything in them successfully. However the higher class ones take many more people to accomplish the goal.
One thing we have found as well is a lot of abandoned towers. They get put up and never taken down even after the controlling corp has left the system. ------------------------------------------------- Search: Sky Grunthor |

If my memory serves me right, CCP has never said that they didn't want WH space to be colonised. They have always said that they have left to so there is an option to do so, but obviously at a higher risk then doing it in normal space.
I am pretty sure that all the low end WH space which has access to empire/low sec get pos's up pretty often but I would think that all the top end WH's do not have many pos's on them because to keep them fueled would have you check multiple WH's before you could get out.

Well we still dont know exactly how the spawnining of wormholes work, it could be that certain wormholes are more likely to link to certain regions than others. I used to live in a C4 that linked to Amarian space much more frequently than other empire regions.
I'm also suprised to hear this as the past 3 wormholes I've entered were compeletly empty of towers.
I was also stuck in a wormhole for more than a week and didnt see a single person, if you log on and theres a "this system is loading" delay then you know your the first person to enter that wormhole since downtime, provided you havnt loged on previously since downtime.. I got this message everytime I loged on (I was actualy hoping someone would could through so I could buy probes off them).

The last two wormhole systems I've been in have been completely cleaned out. I mean completely...only the wormhole from highsec and another deeper into W space were left. Both were class 2 wormholes.

The last time I went into a WH we were in the middle of a plex and got jumped by someone poking around. They blew up the hauler so we had to go back. The second occasion I lost a ship when getting pew-pewed at a sleeper site. Not very good odds it seems.
Of course, this was back when W-space was new. I've probed a few WHs (4-5) and all of them have POSs at them. I haven't checked them because I wasn't using a covops (a Heron...), but I'm willing to bet it was active...unless it was abandoned.

Without going into too much detail, the wormhole our corp has set up in is rarely visited by anyone unless it lands too close to one of the trade hubs. We were two jumps from Jita once and the system was essentially flooded that day, so we did stuff in k-space and went in and out as little as possible.
We did have one enterprising group set up a POS not far from ours, but they took it down a few days later, and never hassled us. The farmed the sleeper sites and moved on. Since then, it's just been us. --Vel

I don't think W-space is being permanently colonized. I think it's more of a caravan style settlement where they set up their POS, strip the area of resources for awhile and then move on.
From what I've heard, permanent settlements in W-space are not very profitable because it actually takes a long time for the system to respawn the sites. It's better for a group to move from system to system than to sit in one place for months.

Hello! Speaking as a c5/c6 colonist, I can confirm that while finding POS's in c5/c6 is becoming more frequent, it is still a relative rarity. For those of you complaining about c1-c3 colonies, build a bridge (and get over it). Of course people are going to start here. C1-3 have much higher chance of high sec exits, therefore these wh's have a much higher chance of being scanned down and colonised.
P.S. - Also relish the pewpew. Its BS or smaller in gangs, no hot drops, gate camps etc.
PPS - If corps are looking for free tips on wh colonisation, call the experts, we're in ApertureCOM game channel...

Hi Obsidian here with my 2 cents.
Colonizing a wh is a waste of time acutally. As soon as a pos is anchored the respawns of sites go from frequent to non existant. Many people think they hit the jack pot and can farm lots of sites per day but the truth is, once you colonize a system and the site is gone. It will not respawn on it a regular basis. The W-system will only spawn wh regularly and not a site.
Your best bet is this, find a colonized system. gank everyone in there and then find all the wh's and fly bs' with full 1600mm plates on them until the wh's collapse and they cant get back. That would teach them to colonize a wh as there is a 90% chance they wont be able to get back and fuel their pos.

Which is why they run the sites in adjacent systems.

Any smart corp has a few probing alts logged off with the POS at all times so they can quickly probe back out to empire for a refuel route.

Edited by: Zartanic on 31/08/2009 16:06:05 A lot of Corp who install POS's are nomads there which would give the impression there are more of them. Most POS's are really just like base camps, they are temporary and used just to clear the WH out (I know about adjacent systems being used so maybe Im wrong there).
I now find about 50% of WH's occupied by a POS which to me is very reasonable. I also suspect if you go deep into WH space you will find a whole stream of empty WH's, although I'm guessing there.
For purely selfish reasons I would like more WH space though. I would also like special WH's that, say, provide a key to get in or some sort of additional experience like space monsters or unique missions:) These WH's would be a treasure trove but very dangerous. These would make exploration even more fun.

Incorrect. CCP have stated that anchoring a POS does not affect spawns. All site spawn times are quite long, so what you're seeing is the effect of people running the sites in their system and waiting out the NORMAL respawn timer on them.

Not saying this idea is completely is completely refined or should be implimented, just my input on the subject:
Perhaps CCP should introduce a mechanic in w-space that limits how long a POS can stay anchored, or at least at a certain point make it a problem to keep the POS up for the owners.
Seeing as w-space is in a way the empire of the sleepers CCP should make it so when a POS is put up, a timer begins (with varrying times per system and per danger level). Once that time is up, powerful sleeper drones begin to spawn with the goal of destroying the "invaders" POS.
Once the POS is taken down or destroyed, the spawn would remain in orbit for X amount of time to assure the owner, if they took the POS down, cant just put it back up (for an example, 72 hours). Trying to cheat the clock by taking the POS down and then putting it back up at the 11th hour of the timer would also not work, as the timer would be linked to that particular anchor point. This would prevent circumventing the system by people who use alt corps or have alliance members simply swap out the POS.
Losing a billion + array of structures and loot to NPC's would certainly discourage colonization but admitedly it may have a negative impact. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |
