Anybody gonna be trying out the new upcoming MMO September 22th, Aion?
Gonna keep a subscription to this (thank you EVE skill system), but already pre-ordered and look forward to trying out this new game. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAPSLOCK, BECAUSE SOMETIMES REGULAR FONT JUST, ISN'T, GOOD ENOUGH. |

It obviously has more of a grind than EVE (considering EVE has basically zero grind minus standings if you count that), but after playing the betas and reading forums for a while, the grind is no worse than WoW or Warhammer or anything. I actually quite enjoyed leveling up in this game much more compared to the others I have played (besides the EVE skill system which I really like). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAPSLOCK, BECAUSE SOMETIMES REGULAR FONT JUST, ISN'T, GOOD ENOUGH. |

Well my first post was more of a joke. I'm interested when they give a free trial to go and check it out. ________________________________________________

BTW, I read your other post recently. I would advise you to just stop giving a crap about what other people in school think and just have fun and focus on graduating. When I first entered High School I was shy as crap, and one day I said to myself "this is ****ing stupid I'm gonna stop being a *****". After that I loved High School. My senior year was one of the best times of my life. Now I'm married, have a college degree, have a good job, and still have good friends from High School as well as other places in life. I know its cliche' but its true when people say "high school is just a bunch of drama and it doesn't really matter what people think of you".
TLDR: Slap yourself in the face, tell yourself it doesn't matter what people think of you, and go find a chick and do her. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAPSLOCK, BECAUSE SOMETIMES REGULAR FONT JUST, ISN'T, GOOD ENOUGH. |

Oh also if someone is ever picking on you or generally being a douchebag, I would advise you beat the crap out of them. Looking back, it was totally worth it. Your punishment is either In School Suspension, I.E. identical to school except you stay in the same room all day. Or Out of School Suspension, I.E. a 5, 10, or 15 day vacation.
There were a few people that said stupid **** and man am I glad I knocked there lights out instead of "being the better man". Now than I'm an adult and the pesky "Assault" laws matter, sometimes I gotta walk away from douchebags instead of knocking them out with the lead pipe I keep under my bed, or the brass knuckles I keep in my car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAPSLOCK, BECAUSE SOMETIMES REGULAR FONT JUST, ISN'T, GOOD ENOUGH. |

Yah that did look awesome. I'm still waiting on a Fallout MMO or Shadowrun MMO, that would be sweet. I played the Fallen Earth beta but it seemed incredibly buggy. Totally wrong thread for these posts, but my school is something I really wanted to get into for the Academies and if you are absent more than 10% of the school year, you get removed from the school, that includes suspensions. ________________________________________________

I'm really bored of EVE atm and a lot of friends are going to play this so will probably be giving the open beta a look. I've never really played a fantasy MMO before though so who knows how I'll cope

Hasn't open beta finished yet? I thought it was due for release in the next couple of months. If you do try the beta, would be really interesting to hear how you find it.
I made the mistake of signing up for champions online so will prob give that a go...looks like CoH/V but a little more cartoony and has some cool features. And with SW:TOR on the horizon I think Aion will end up ignored, despite best intentions. I meant to have a go, but too many games, not enough time -------------

I preordered Aion, I also installed the Japanese pack as I heard the English client is ****ing aweful.
I would've just saved time and joined the Japanese Aion server and used their client but thanks to the impending EU/NA release they decided to block any IP's from either from connection to the website or server, so that's a no go. |

couple guys at work are very interested in this game.
i will take their reviews of it with a grain of salt though, they love Wow and think eve is too complicated.

Aion isn't like WoW at all. Looks can be very deceiving. I have been playing in the betas and it has a very good pvp system with balanced classes. In fact the way combat unfolds reminds me of EVE in a way lol. You have your small roaming gang pvp that infiltrate enemy territory through random rifts that spawn every couple hours (kinda like a cyno into enemy zones ). Of course there is the large scale blob fests to capture fortresses in the Abyss (which you can relate to 0.0 outposts that your faction fight for control over)
There is an NPC faction that is the enemy of both player factions and will pwn the stronger faction if they gain too much of a foothold to keep things in balance. Its basically an eternal 3 way battle between the 2 player factions and the much stronger NPC faction...it's good fun.
A good feature the game has to keep balance in check is it will close off character creation on one side if the population there is skewed. So no more of these 3 to 1 population discrepancies that a lot of servers have in other PvP mmo's.
Oh and you have fricken wings!

Seems a few people are actually curious about the game, so I will post a little basic info I have learned from the betas:
8 classes, most are similar to other fantasy classes, with a few fairly unique ones:
Templar = Shield/Sword Tank. Mandatory for Dungeons. Gladiator = Massive 2 Hander, AOE DPS, Offtank Assassin = WOW Rogue, Combo System, Stuns, pretty cut and paste. Ranger = Range Bow, No Pet, Kiting, Some CC. Sorcerer = Range Spellcaster, Glass Cannon, Best CC and Mandatory for Dungeons. Spiritmaster = Interesting Pet Class, Groundbased w/ Anti-air abilities. Great 1v1 Class. Spells + Dots. Cleric = Main Healer. Good Survivability. Mandatory for Dungeons. Chanter = Interesting Buff Class. Offheals. Average DPS. Massive buffs, 80%+ of all buffs in Aion.
Graphics are top-notch, make other MMOs look like a joke. If you play it on an Flatscreen TV, it feels like your watching a friggin movie.
PVP is very well balanced. PVP is a mixture of twitch, group tactics, and overall skill. Gear plays a role, but is not an autowin. The third faction, the Balaur, keep PVP as balanced as possible as well as throwing curveballs into the mix, making it unpredictable. Massive incentives from many things keep people in the PVP, and keep the zone fun and unpredictable.
Solo PvE is typical hack n slash with quests. Quests are average, mob AI is average, grind is average, fighting is average.
Group PvE is quite good. Grouping for quests and higher zones is encourage, and much more worthwhile than soloing mobs later on. Dungeons are above average, and plentiful especially later on. Decent sized endgame already included.
Overall, the game is worth playing. It IS better than WOW, don't let the look of the game make you think its just a WOW Clone. This game has better balance than WOW and it has only been out in Asia for under a year. The PVP is MUCH better than other fantasy games, and the lack of scenarios/battlegrounds and crap like that keeps the PVP REAL and MEANINGFUL. The best stuff in the game is in the Abyss, so if you want it, you have to fight the Balaur and the opposing faction for it.
Also, crafting and gathering are much better than most games I have played. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAPSLOCK, BECAUSE SOMETIMES REGULAR FONT JUST, ISN'T, GOOD ENOUGH. |

Really ? Wait until the "pro-gamers" complain that combat is too random and not dependent enough on their nonexistent skills.

Great, so you have all the players split up in more dungeons, making it harder to find an incompetent bunch of kids to do some crappy dungeon.

Ok, I've been playing the Beta this last week or so. It's been a lot of fun, although there's a few things that annoy me, but as far as fantasy MMOs go it's best I've played and I'll definately be picking it up at launch.
Pros:
- Very Pretty, Good Graphics for the most part that run well on most PCs - Very Nice Char. Creation - Best I've seen out there, can adjust pretty much everything - FLYING. It's really fun, and can be really unforgiving (pull your wings by mistake mid-air and you'll make a lovely crater in the floor) - PvE is a challenge, risk:reward is nicely balanced (won't get any EXP from mobs that are much lower level than you and killing something 5 levels higher will get you loads) and pretty much required to complete parts of the quest even at a low level (the amount of people I saw trying to solo the Elite NPCs only to get smashed in seconds was funny though) - Classes seems well balanced in PvP although I only got to level 25. Ranged classes will usually beat Melee 1v1 due to kiting and such but Melee is still powerful. A Ranger (think: Vagabond) will beat a Gladiator (think: Brutix) 1v1 pretty easily if they manage to keep range, but well timed Charge (MWD Burst) by the Glad and the Ranger is dead in seconds. - Non-consenual PvP. There are safe areas where you're not at risk (much like Hi-sec) but the rewards aren't anything special, and you can't do the campaign quests without going to PvP zones, where you're open to be mercilessly ganked by the other side because they found a rift to your world. (I was just minding by own business, hunting some lake monsters outside my fort thinking I was all safe and stuff when 2 rangers came out of nowhere and ganked me!) - Lots of Customization when it comes to Gear. Options to upgrade the role, performance and appearance of almost all items you can buy - Abyss. One Giant PvP Region and Fortress war between the 2 sides, and the 3rd NPC side which are evil, who you think you're beating and then all of a sudden a Battleship comes out of nowhere and uh, you remember that pic of the Apoc shooting lasers down upon WoW residents? Think that.
Cons: - Mostly Typical MMO XP Level grinding. No PvP before level 20 (except arranged duels and Arena training) and you can't go to the Abyss before level 25. - Very limited warehouse space, especially so since I'm used to EVE where I can dump anything and everything in a single station without a care in the world. You can expand it, but it's expensive. You soon find yourself with more items than you can store or sell at once. - Solo PvP is hard, if not almost downright impossible except for the Assasin (who can cloak) Your sight range is quite low so you typically don't see other people 'til they're not far off weapons range. Imagine EVE with no Scanner and no Local. I'd be sitting on a high hill/cliff, would see someone on my Radar so naturally jump off, open wings and do a rapid gliding descent onto them, only to find 5-10 more dots appearing on the way and for me to land in the middle of their whole gang. Ooops.
Overall, very fun game and more like EVE than you'd think. It's one major flaw is that they stuck to the standard XP leveling system which I hate to death, but if you look past that (was hard, even for me) it has a lot of potential IMO.

If there's a free trial I'll give it a go but I learnt my lesson after Age of Conan & Warhammer.
As for NCSoft/Arenanet...I'll definitely be picking up Guild Wars 2 when it's released but their other titles will need to prove their metal in the market before I dive in.
What I'm really looking forward to is SWTOR -it's starting to shape up nicely and I think could be a real challenge to the WoW. We can see from the initial spike of both AoC & WH...players are looking for something new.
I've tried a variety of MMOs but Eve has been the one constant among them and will likely remain so.

heh, I notice a lot of NCsoft games have that same trait: at its core its a brilliant concept, but its ultimate execution is riddled with mistakes.
All their other games are great concepts, just once they are put down on paper, they tend to be less fun then expected. Or they are fun for a few hours, then boreing. Guild wars, Exteel, tabula rasa, all great concepts (skill based pvp, arena mech fighting online, first person style game play respectively). But their ultimate conclusions end up being fun for a few hours but don't hold your attention because of lack of long term goals, and games that you play for the sake of becoming better are much better suited in the fighting genre (such as street fighter of MVC2).
I hope this game goes the distance. It sounds awesome and when there is a free trial I'll definitely play.
BTW, I define Success as a game that enjoys a quarter million players. If that sounds small, you have to realize, WOW is an anomaly. If you check the population of other MMO's before (and during) it, you'll notice WOW is radically off the curve as far as populations go.

I have played through the Aion beta this past week, had enough time to hit level 17, did some fights in the arena etc, and I have to say it was a ton of fun. I have already preordered pre open beta so I will be subbin to the game.
Aion fills a niche that eve doesn't which is simple hack and slash mmo set in a beautiful world that isn't done over the top. Something WoW or WAR is incapable of doing.
Combine EVE and Aion with another new mmo on the way Earth Rise, and those are my 3 mmo's |
