What the ****?
Gameguard wouldn't let Aion run on my PC, even though i have only 25 processes running, 7 of which are Outpost and Avast >_>
Could log in for a few minutes before it popped up a message "The game or gameguard has been modified".
I may give it a go again if they remove that POS. Still can't believe they are actually advising people to turn off their internet security.
Also, little bit of fun: GameGuard does not prevent hacking. In fact, some hacks require GG to be running in order to work. If that doesn't ring any alarm bells, i don't know what will.
Originally by: Zen Mehari If there's a free trial I'll give it a go but I learnt my lesson after Age of Conan & Warhammer.
What I'm really looking forward to is SWTOR -it's starting to shape up nicely and I think could be a real challenge to the WoW. We can see from the initial spike of both AoC & WH...players are looking for something new.
Age of Conan has actually matured quite a bit since retail... Tried it again for a little bit, the engine has been optimized a LOT (ran 4-8 times as fast as it used to, no joke), which gives me hope for TSW (which will use the same engine). Gameplay is actually more interesting that i remembered, and while reminiscent of WoW, it does feel different. They added quite a bit in the past year in terms of content aswell.
But oh well... The one MMO i'm really looking forward to is The Secret World. Gief.

I've been playing a few months on the chinese servers, and even with the associated problems (perfectible english traduction pack, sociabilisation issues, bit of lag), I still like playing quite a bit. Eve is the only other MMO that kept me hooked like that after 4 months, and I've tried a lot of them.
It looks like a wow-like at first, but when you dig in, there's lots of little things to master to really be good at it. For instance, Weaving (mixing auto-attacks in your skill combos) will increase your dps, but require good timing to do it right. Aion is a difficult MMO, make no mistake about it. Not hugely complicated, but you'll have to be smart, and pay with sweat to advance.
About pvp, at first ranged classes will hand you your head. As a gladiator, I started holding my own against sorcerers at about lv35. But when you start getting end-game gear, like extendable weapons (think Ivy's whip-sword in soul calibur) and skills, the advantage tend to shift to melee. At least for solo pvp. For raids it's a bit different.
One good thing about Aion's pvp is that you lose abyss points when you die, and those points are fairly precious. So death hurt, and the more AP you have, you more you stand to lose. But having a high AP rank can give you nice specific skills or stuff, so you also have an incentive to keep pvping and avoid death. |

Well NCsoft has just said they are giving Gameguard the boot. So rejoice!
As for Aion. To sum it up in a nutshell, if you are looking to play a fantasy MMO that isnt world of warcraft, Aion is a fairly good choice. As grinds go it is closer to pre kunark EQ from zero to max than it is to Lineage II or Final Fantasy XI. ---

Edited by: Morvyn on 14/09/2009 21:53:10 I was kind of looking forward to it, although the advertising for it is somewhat deceiving.
It's way, WAY more Asian/anime-ish than a lot of the US advertising seems to let on - and after all, anime is cartoons so basically, is crappy.
Instead, I'm looking forward to giving Global Agenda a go.

I'm semi interested in it, mainly because the character creation is so deep I'll be able to play a NORMAL looking character and kick the **** out of all the anime looking angels.
That's something you gotta give them props for, you can literally make a character that looks like anything.

maybe your definition of anime is different than mine, but to me it didn't feel like it at all. They've really done a good job westernizing the game IMO.
I mean, yes you CAN make your char look anime, but you can make normal looking chars too.. or downright abominations...

Looks like they're starting to get the message anyways:
Quote: - After analyzing our open beta test results Aion will not feature GameGuard at launch. We will however continue to pursue ways to effectively utilize GameGuard within Aion in the future. Right now we're focused on providing players with the best possible Aion experience.

Yeah they removed GG for all the ppl having trouble, at least for now...nice to see they are listening to their community. They are quite proactive on twitter actually with constant updates as to what they are doing... I never had any trouble with GG myself (64 bit OS). I have decided to give Aion a few months of my time as it's been a blast in beta (never even felt like a beta). Just had the pre selection a couple hours ago letting us login and create 2 characters and reserve our names for launch in 2 days. Game goes live in 4 days but people who pre-ordered get a 2 day head start on the masses. fun fun
I have a pretty good feeling about this game, it's slick, great to play and very competitive. I think it should do pretty well and they have already sold over 400,000 pre orders at the last count I believe. Keeping the server limit to 12 servers to start with is a good idea too... makes for a tighter population on the servers, so no ghost towns. They also have the balancing lock out which stops ppl making too many of one faction to keep it all balanced.

There already was. It was called OPEN BETA. from September 6th to 13th.
It's worth the buy, coming from me, and I'm the kinda guy that hated both WoW and WAR.

No, its because they have jobs and other interests than a game. You could easily become a trillionare by spending your entire days in the game.

Edited by: Winged Crime on 25/09/2009 10:27:54 I played the open beta, went into it with an open mind. I came up with a new name for it while I was there, or at least a new way of spelling it: aiYAWN
Apart from relatively smooth gameplay and decent graphics, I saw no reason to play it further. It was being heralded as revolutionary and all this junk, and it's just a giant grindfest.
The general chat channels were full of fanboys exclaiming how much more of a mature experience it is compared to things like WoW, and going on and on about how childish WoW and other games were.
Meanwhile, the town I was in: I was surrounded by people with "Animal Lover" and "Tree Hugger" titles beside their names, and directly beside me were male characters, with facial hair, shaking their bums and dancing with pink pom poms.
Needless to say, the client has been fully removed from my machine and I feel sexually secure again in space.

I preordered this based on everyone saying how great it was.
To be blunt, it's crap.
1) Flying is restricted to small areas only 2) The game is linear as hell 3) The quests and mobs are generic as hell - kill 5 of these and 10 of these, deliver this etc... you're meant to be an hero demi-god, but you're nothing more than a skivvy 4) Combat consists of constant repetition of keypresses i.e. 2,3,4,5,6,2,3
It's an entirely derivative and vanilla MMO, albeit a polished one.

Maybe i'm getting old bu this game looks awful, I just watched some youtube videos of it and to be honest you could not pay me to play that game.
Terrible terrible terrible.
P.S. The thought of what the community "might" be like makes me shudder even more, bunch of teenage dirtbags running around naked with their female chars, saying "lul" at everything that moves.

Heh of course I did research about the game first so BLOW IT OUT ASS
I expected some WOW-type variant with wings and some innovation, instead it was grind with a borrowed quest and crafting system. I agree with this; the game has no soul.

1/ Not in the abyss, which is were you're supposed to spend most of your time. 2/ At first, yes, but it get better as you level up. 3/ Of course quests and mobs are generic. Did you seriously expect quests to be original? It's always one kind or another of travel or combat, because the genre simply isn't compatible with anything else. 4/ Combat in Aion is full of little things you have to master if you want to be truelly good. But to realize that, you have to get to the levels were every npc has it's own skill chains, where every player has it's arsenal of attacks/counters alaivable, where stigmas and stuff completely change the way you play your avatar.
You sound like someone who judged Aion only on it's first few levels. Do you do the same with movies and songs? ------------------------------------------
