As several posters have already said, it's just WOW in space. It's going to be very PvE oriented with factional PvP warfare restricted to the Neutral Zone. Even then, it's already been decided that the death penalty will not mean the loss of your ship, just something like losing some red shirts. Even when you're on a planet and about to die, you're party will me "miraculously" beamed back to your ship before they die.
Also, it's going to be SEVERELY instanced. It may be one server, but the will be no running into random people on missions and most of the exploration content.
Granted, there's a lot about the game that has yet to be revealed (they haven't even started closed beta yet) but all clues point that the only thing it'll have in common with EVE is that it's a spaceship game.
It will will be popular for the carebear crowd who don't like the harshness of EVE, and simply because it's Star Trek (the only reason I'm somewhat interested). |

I know that myself and most of the pilots I know will be dropping eve the day ST:O is released. We have been playing EVE for years because it is the only space game out.
WoW in space? Get real, not even close. Just another Straw Man argument, not even worth rebuttal really.
And no, you may not have my stuff, It just might suck after all, I really hope not though.

I've been following the development of ST:O. I like Star Trek, but quite frankly it looks like a pile of dribble.
Only game I'm looking forward to is The Old Republic, and even then with Dust and Ambulation coming out, I don't think it would be enough to make me give up EVE.(As long as Dust and Ambulation is done right)

Its worse than WoW. just about everything will be instanced, no economy to speak of, very very restricted pvp, no risk... I makes me want to vomit just thinging about it.

Originally by: Ruddy Rax I wouldnt worry about star trek, last screen shots from the game i saw made the game look about 4 years old. and as another poster said just about every star trek game there has been has been fairly bland with maybe the exception being elite force which i thought was a fairly decent shooter.
Are you really a gamer? Any gamer knows that games that aren't even near their release rarely have the best screenshots. Some games don't release good screenies till just a few months before release. STo doesn't even have an official release date yet. And I'm sure the last screenshots you saw weren't yesterday either.

Yeah, I'm a Trekkie too. It pains to think STO might not actually be good. I might not even play it if it is good, but I'd at least like to know it would turn out good.
I'm really into ToR as well. Bioware has yet to disappoint me. I was a huge fan of SWG before the change in game mechanics and they dropped both of my professions: Creature Handler and Teras Kasi. I mean, seriously, I lost both professions and those were the professions I finally decided I loved doing. It was a total buzz kill. But, whatever, I'm just hoping that ToR doesn't disappoint. But, I really haven't been keeping up with the development of it.

IF it has world exploration and IF it's similar to EVE, then it will supercede EVE.
However, I have invested six years in EVE because I have faith in CCP that they will stay at the forefront.

The devs have already confirmed, that it will not be similar to EVE. "If your whole party is wiped out while you're doing a mission, you should be able to pick up where you left off. You won't lose your ship when it's destroyed." Also "you will be competing for resources more than outright fighting other players for them."
It will have "infinite exploration", with new worlds constantly being created by the Genesis Program. The part that will cause most lolz is: You can name stars and planets you discover. That isn't going to end well. Either the devs have to approve all the names or the galaxy is going to have pretty interesting system names.

I think all mmo games spend too much effort on graphics and the experience of playing in an environment. I have no hope for STO to become anything remotely resembling EVE.

None of the space-based MMOs that are coming out are even remotely close to EVE, STO least of all. I don't even think there's any PVP in STO.
IT will probably draw -some- people away, but not many...and that will probably be offset by the people who are brought into the genre by it.

I had a quick look at the Star Trek Online screenshots and Wikipedia description - it looks a bit PvE-ish, repetitious, and lacking in atmosphere.

Two ships from diffrent "alliances" meet in STO:
Ship 1: You cant be here! This is federation space and according to the treaty of XYZ your in clear violation of the blah blah blah treaty!!!
Ship 2: I claim this system in the name of the Romulat star empire and theres nothing you can do about it you federation dog!
*Out of no where* Ship 3: We are the borg, we will pwn you all!
*Super borg wants to engage in pvp with you, accept?*
That same situation framed in Eve Online:
Ship 1: Enemy alliance member spotted at the gate! Get the carriers! Scramble him!
Ship 2: I claim this sys... AH CRAP!!!
*cloaked and 20 km off* Ship 3: Soon as they kill him im goin to ninja loot his wreck.
*Ship 1 scores a critical hit on ship 2 for 8892 damage* On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

I Like how people use the "WoW in space" comment like it is supposed to be an insult lol. Last time I checked WoW (regardless of what anyone thinks of the game personally) was doing a lot better than EVE. I'm sure the ST:O developers would be happy if it turned out to be WoW in space, that would mean it has completely owned EVE (highly doubtful) ^.^
Bashing a game before it's released isn't really fair, let them release it before you judge it when you actually know what it's like. Just because it is a more PvE orientated game doesn't mean it won't be successful at what it's aiming for and from what I can tell it's not even trying to be like EVE anyway. I won't be trying it myself because I never really liked the Star Trek universe, I'll be sticking with EVE.

i prefer the log in have action that will be available because people are willing to fight because they wont suffer huge losses than the few and far inbetween epic fights of eve, which you still have to wait around for hours to kick off and then still you have to make sure you play 18 hours a day or you might miss that one epic fight that happens once a month or so.
pvp with risk like eve is good for the adrenaline rush it gives, but is the pay off worth it? the infrequent fights because no one wants to fight unless they win with 90% efficiency? or outnumber you 10-1? dont think it is worth it. Ninja is recruiting. |

Being compared to wow is an insult merely because.. well, its wow. us elitists cant have anything to do with that mass market game - for we are better tahn that. Or so we claim at least.

WoW in space is an insult to some, but for most just a generic classification. The insult part comes more from the fact it is used here, in a forum of a game that is very different from WoW and populated mostly by people who prefer EVE over WoW. How popular a game is doesn't matter, since we aren't discussing its financial success, but whether it is in competition with EVE. Its PvE focus and meaningless death means it competes more with games like WoW and for just this reason can be justly called WoW in space.
Bashing the game is also just fine, since it is based on actual info that the developers themselves have released. Granted a lot of details aren't available, but we can still discuss the game based on info we do know. And even though the financial success of the game is irrelevant here, even that can be questioned, since there are a lot of good PvE MMOs now and more on their way, SWtOR being the strongest scifi rival with its strong focus on PvE content.

Graphics looks half-baked. The universe isn't anything like star trek to the point that it just looks like a completely different game with star trek ships in it. All this is is WoWTrek.
Faction Vs Faction PVP only = Lose PvE mechanics not yet decided upon = Lose.
Sounds a lot like Pirates of the Burning Sea.. in space..
My first thought as well.

Star Trek online seems a nice game but i don't think it'll have anything to share with Eve... but the fact it's a sci-fi game.
In my opinion the "nemesis" of eve will be another game... probably Black Prophecy or Jumpgate Evolution.
