It has been stated that in the next expansion "dominion" that CCP will be updating the graphics for planets. Im curious as to how they will do it. Do you think that it will just be a general texture upgrade or will it be fancier , like will they make planets look bigger etc. I heared something awhile back that they would be using geometric shading which would be cool.
I personally think they will just do a texture upgrade but we'll see.

IIRC they will add level of detail mechanics on them, so the closer you get the more details you'll see. -------- Ideas for: Mining

I want eve to look like that now, plz
No matter how good they look, I hope it's still possible to hide in planets :D

Found this in Worm Hole space, never before seen in K space by all accounts. Perhaps a Dominion preview.

Edited by: Korizan on 10/09/2009 15:31:57 It would be very nice.
I would love to warp to a planet and be able to orbit it once there.
Most GPS satelites are around 350 Miles from the surface I believe which is on grid. So in theory you could warp to the planet and then orbit it if done right colliding with it or burning up would be very cool.
Even better having a shuttle enter the atmosphere (its max speed of course would then be reduced) but the whole idea of a skimming a planet trying to escape a bigger ship that can't enter the atmosphere would be great.
Example would be Babylon 5 where the white star was in jupiter's atmosphere while the agamemnom (spelling) was chasing it.
Now if they make that happen, I would be just speechless. One can always dream though.

About 340 KM And as far as optics. I would say the equivalent of Naked eye or even zoomed out some to see a big picture.
The space stations circular orbit is about 7000 KM radius. Which funny enough is a average distance you warp in too in game.
So unless all the planets are closer to the size of mercury even then I question the view, the planets are way off. Let alone gas giants.
The bottom line this was done simply cause if they depicited the planets accurately they would look REALLY BAD. Try going toward a planet and you will see.
So it is really going to depend on how much they turn up the graphics as to how close to reality we will get as far the ratio between planet size and orbital distance.

I have very high hopes for this graphical upgrade. It has the potential to make EVE feel a lot more epic. And I'm actually fairly optimistic CCP will get this right. Their artists are very good.

This would certainly be cool for background fluff with epic space battles. Unfortunitely I doubt that such a thing would occur as I doubt planet warp in points are picked for two fleets to gather to fight each other. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

Dudes, it's a game.
A upgrade to the planets would surely be epic and welcomed. But having screen-sized planets just because "Thats realistic" isn't going to help game mechanics. Thinking about the textures needed to fill that space is really making me doubt anyone would really want it unless they have the newest hardware from today. ______________________________

The ISS is still within the thermosphere of Earth, so of course it will look huge from there. It's not even technically 'outer space'.
But i get your point, if we can enter close orbit of planets they should be huge like that.
