So, I bought this toon of the bazaar last week.
Yesterday, my buddy tells me that "Sambo" is a racist term. I'm like, "WTF, are you crazy?" So I google it, and sure as shyte, Sambo is a terribly racist name.

DAMNIT.
I don't want to be racist, so I petition my own name (again, on this toon which I just purchased) and ask the EVE GMs to consider giving me a name change so that I don't appear like a complete freakin' ****** to everyone for having a racist name.
The EVE GM response? "We're sorry but we cannot offer to change your characters name in this case as its not offensive." Holy hell! How do they figure that? I know Iceland's black population is probably like ... .5%, but come on guys. Read the WIKI page that I linked!
So what do you all think? Is everyone going to think I'm a total racist? :( I didn't realize the name meant anything when I bought the toon (It made me think... RAMBO  )

The first GM to respond to your petition usually just gives you a copy and paste response and doesn't read your petition at all. Ask for it to be escalated to a senior GM and actually read. Include that many people have found the name offensive and have told you in local chat and that you are being harassed with evemails about it (even if that may not be true)

Did you link it to them? If so, ask it to be elevated to a senior GM or ask a friend to petition your name. They'll change you back to Caldari Citizen 091238475 or something like that.
Edit: Vaal had a good idea, tell them you've been harassed about it.

Do you get a chance to rename then? Caldari Citizen 343498 is even worse than Sambo.

The only thing that holds our language together is the fact that people attribute meanings to words. So doesn't the fact that people attribute a negative meaning to a word make it a negative word?

In the UK Sambo was quite a common derogatory term for people of ethnic origin, which was mostly used from around the mid 50s when we had a big immigration from the West Indies and was used up until around the early 80's when political correctness started to kick in.
To those of us who remember it being used it is seen as an insult.

I don't know why people say that the word Paki is racist? I always thought it was an abbreviation of Pakistani, I'm sure that when people say things such as words we have to take into account their context.
By the way anyone calling me a Brit is a racist!

I think the name Paki and Sambo were probably just implanted into the UK vocabulary, they may have been used by some as insults but after so many years of use, kids grew up using them because they heard their parents using them and so on, until they eventually just became words that fell out of people's mouths.
It was only when people started pointing them out as insults that they stopped being used and were seen as 'politically incorrect'
