EVE Online is forever evolving and growing in content to meet the needs of every Capsuleer in New Eden. With evolution comes increased demands on player hardware and increasing server power within CCP to provide a dynamic and exciting MMO experience. In his newest blog, CCP Explorer expands upon the ever changing client and server technology and explains why the system requirements to run EVE Online will change slightly with the release of Dominion. You can read the full details here.

I currently only updated to service pack 1 on a computer I use occasionly when I'm away, and I really am only on for skill changing with it.

I doubt it - I think the dll's would be loaded on startup, not when you open your browser for the first time. Ofcourse I could be wrong. Director of Education :: EVE University Chairman of the CSM

Guess which operating system comes pre-loaded when you buy a new computer?
While many of us can load windows XP (or even better, Windows 7) have done so. However, those who are technologically challenged may not even know how to reformat their hard drive or even how to create a bootable CD.

I'm happy to say this doesn't affect me one bit as i am of course running the latest updates at all times (Apart from the "Malicious Software Removal Tool" which is built of suck) but to those that are still running XP Service Pack 1 it is a good time to update as service pack 1 has many known security holes. It might not affect you if you have a good firewall and proper antivirus protection but at some point in time, whatever the reason may be, you will be affected by these security holes. Go to a lan party and the risk of "infection" is immensely greater.
To make that long post short: Keep yourself updated. Doesn't hurt to have extra protection these days.
As for the dev blog, lots of stuff but nothing that helps us understand what Dominion will bring. We already knew about moondoggie!
Gief fappable dev blog liek naow!
Also, i can't help but think this dev blog is just CCP helping Micro$oft advertise Windows 7. The thing that bothers me about Win 7 is that they are trying to sell you an empty shell and then push "addons" on you that cost extra $$$.
My opinions belong to me, you can't have them!

Why is it so hard to believe? Vista as it is today is decently robust and very usable OS (yes, I'm running 64bit Vista myself).
My other options for OS at the point of time I upgraded were: Stoneage old 32bit XP with no good memory support (max usable 3GB out of 4GB) or a real niche product 64bit XP that is more trouble than it's worth. Windows 7 RC came out about the same time, I was considering updating to it until it became apparent that PunkBuster doesn't work in it, or if it does it sure ain't reliable. So I did what was best and got 64bit Vista. I'm gonna upgrade to 64bit Win7 after it's officially released and PunkBuster has official support for it.

4% Mac users... I feel somehow neckid.
But on a serious note,
- 1, thank you for ever taking the leap to include us minorities into your super fab game/ universe. - 2, how will your graphics upgrade influence the Cedega wrapper? (I just cannot seem to forget the first months under Trinity) Really hope thats not coming back.

About time you upgrade then unless you can't due to it being a pirated version of XP. Also to run the latest SP is a great idea from a virus point of view as well.

about a dozen planets are getting completely new graphics. Go take a look at the test server feedback forum. Details are there.
Of course, that probably is not the ONLY graphics being updated. Its currently a ~140 meg patch on SISI right now. ------------------------------------------------- Search: Sky Grunthor |

The new browser is the most likely cause for SiSi not supporting Mac at present. Chrome doesn't run on MacOS and since the new browser basically is Chrome, a bit of work is needed to get it to cooperate. But I assume that'll be fixed by the time dominion comes out.

EDIT: Just wait until Lunix* start going mainsteam because more and more people get fed up with the MS BS. Will CCP support Lunix* once again when that happens? It's just a matter of time me thinks...
As opposed to the linux way of doing things. Giving you an empty shell for free and then having you compile the free add-ons yourself. Hmmmmm. Learn how an OS works to make it have similarly equal functionality as Windows or buy Windows itself and pay for the plug and play ability of their add-ons.
That's a tough one.
Linux won't get used by the general population more on regular PCs until they start standardizing stuff. I've tried installing it many times throughout the years and I've always either had problems with drivers/etc right off the bat (doesn't really happy anymore though but then again I don't need any drivers for Windows 7 either) or i had an issue with an application I wanted. Either the app doesn't work on linux or i have a hard time getting it to work.
I don't get how Linux users don't understand the need for standardization across all the various versions. Ubuntu comes the closest to a user friendly flavor.

Considering that the SISI build (which included a build of the new IGB) loads and runs on XP SP1, I would not worry unduly, it sounds more like a matter of disclaiming that the IGB will work and, this is the important bit, will be officially supported.
In theory you could run Unrealtournament 2004 on a pentium 133 from the early nineties, but that does not mean they will "guarantee" that it will work on it, which is what system requirements are pretty much about. That is, saying that if you meet the system requirements, all parts of it should work.

CCP Explorer, how many of those Windows users would you estimate are actually wine users? Do you have any way to find this out and have you thought about doing so?

Some of us have access through our organizations that allows us to get Windows 7 early Others are using the Win 7 RC.
Good write up. If you are still using xp that is sp1 or earlier, man you are open to some nasty security issues. |

They talked about graphics updates, and possibly dropping support for SM 2.0 earlier, and about planets recently. I take it then that planets are not the only graphics update in the works? what else are they working on?

I've been using Windows 7 for a while, I specially like how I can run different instances of the same client with extra efficiency, comapred to XP or Vista where I had to copy the client several tiems and use different executables.
This alone makes it worth it, but overall is a very robust OS, IMo the strongest release to date on common user SO, even better than XP.

Its an older laptop that I bring with me when I'm out of town, I can make it on and can keep my skills updated but I don't have the time to actually do anything so I don't plan on getting a newer laptop or updating it unless I absolutley have too.

I bought a laptop about a month ago, and I had to pay a ransom in order to get Windows XP Pro with it instead of Vista.
It wasn't a huge ransom, in the grand scheme of things, but nevertheless...
