Edited by: Jordaniel Torey on 08/10/2009 20:02:37 Okay, I've played for about 6 months, since January (with a 2 month unwanted break, stupid recession). I fly a Navy Megathron with railguns and launchers (might as well something will the two extra slots, right?). Well, when I came back this month I went out on an L4 the second I logged in. Although I tanked it just fine, my DPS was laughable. 1500 per volley of four 425MM Prototype Gauss Guns, that was if I'm lucky. They cycle about every 4 seconds, so I wasn't really handing out the damage.
My issue is, my fit seems like it should be doing much more. I have 2 million skill points in gunnery, and every skill at 4 or 5.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Controlled Bursts / Rank 2 / SP: 90510 of 512000
Gunnery / Rank 1 / SP: 256000 of 256000

Medium Hybrid Turret / Rank 3 / SP: 24000 of 135765
Motion Prediction / Rank 2 / SP: 90510 of 512000
Rapid Firing / Rank 2 / SP: 292475 of 512000
Sharpshooter / Rank 2 / SP: 213126 of 512000
Small Hybrid Turret / Rank 1 / SP: 256000 of 256000
Small Projectile Turret / Rank 1 / SP: 1415 of 8000

Trajectory Analysis / Rank 5 / SP: 226275 of 1280000
Weapon Upgrades / Rank 2 / SP: 16000 of 90510
---------------------------------------------------------------
Am I missing a skill I should have there?
Like I said, my fit has four 425mm prototype gauss gun 1s on it, no damage boosting anything on a Navy Mega. It was built as a tank, so I forwent damage boosting modules. If I really need one to pull off soloing missions thought, I'll do it. If I need to post my fit, I can do that too.
Thank You,
- Eric
Okay, I just noticed there's something wrong with the skills it lists on EVE Online's web page. Obviously I cannot have Gunnery 1 and still have Large Hybrid Turrets. Please ignore the ranks for now, but those are the skills I have. Except, you know, all at 4 and 5.

If your tank is more than comfortable, fit some mag stabs for extra dps.
I've not fired large rails for a while so couldn't say if you're on the money with expected DPS as you are but the mag stabs are the obvious solution from what you've said so far. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why are you only putting 4 guns on a Megathron?
Also, couldn't you just load up EFT and answer your own question?

Your first problem is having 4x 425mm guns instead of 7x. And if you're tank is comfortable, replace tank mods with Magstabs until you're barely comfortable.

I only have 4 guns on because the tanking modules are power hogs. 2 big 'ole reppers don't leave much in their wake.
I'll look at getting the tank to "Barely" comfortable and putting some mag stabs on.
Thanks Again,
Eric

What everyone is getting at here is that it is VITAL to fill your navy mega full of guns. Consider using 350mm guns if that is what it will take to fit a full rack of them. Failing that, look into a rig for extra powergrid.

Edited by: Furb Killer on 08/10/2009 21:02:24 You can do dual rep on navy mega with full rack of 425mms, i know, i have done it long time ago. Does require you to go full faction though.
So better idea is to use single rep + 4 hardeners (and damage control if that makes you feel more warm and fuzzy in the beginning). You will have CPU issues, so i can sell you some faction hardeners i am too lazy to actually sell normally
Edit: And what Akita means is that navy mega stays crap whatever you do with it. Kronos is really only decent rail ship for missions, with low skills you will do better in cnr that with high skills in navy mega. And while kronos isnt uber awesome for missions like nightmare, paladin and golem, (give it more drone bandwidth), it is quite good.

Drop down to a single rep, manage aggro better and fit 7 425mms or even 350mms. Better to have more weaker guns than a few best ones.

tracking computer with tracking speed script, web, or target painter using 425's if you are shooting at smaller ships going a lot faster or too close to you.
Drones?
more guns! a HAM or HML in the 8th high? (although you auto FAIL 99.999999% of the time by doing this)

Edited by: Jordaniel Torey on 09/10/2009 00:13:58 First off, I didn't post for people to criticize and laugh at my fit, I came for advice. Then again, I guess I am dealing with the part of the EVE community that is... more vocal. I made it to take high DPS, and it does. Yes, it also completely faction fit, save for the guns (can't find many faction rails for sale).
Otherwise, I had a pure tank Mega, made for fleets. Now, I need to get it to solo. I didn't think it was that hard to understand.
And no, I don't expect very high damage, but 1500 seems a bit low. Even for 4 guns.

What you seem to be overlooking is that in missions, gank is tank. There are basically two ways to tank missions:
1) Tank tank - you build the ship to take loads and loads of damage. Your own damage output suffers because of this, and thus it will take longer to complete the missions. 2) Gank tank - you build the ship to inflict massive amounts of damage, while only having enough actual tank to survive. The idea is to quickly kill ships that inflict damage on you, thus reducing the amount of incoming damage and removing the need for a massive damage sponge.
Railguns aren't really a high damage weapon anyway, and you're barely using more than half the number that can be fitted on the ship. Combine both and you really are lacking in damage output. Most mission ships wind up fitting 2-3 damage mods and devoting the rest to tank or utility. The Navy Mega has 8 low slots; try 1 large repper, 4 hardeners, and 3 magnetic field stabilizers. Put 7 guns on it, dropping down to 350mm if you have to. Stick on a Large Auxiliary Current Router if you need more grid. Add a tracking computer or two in the mid slots. Then see if it doesn't do better. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

I see you're full tank but why 4 guns? If your skills (AWU, ENG) aren't high enough to fit a full rack then downgrade to 350's. 7 350's much better than 4 425's. Rails don't do great dps either, also 2 mil in gunnery (especially for large) is not much. stick on 2 magstabs, 6 slot tank is fine :).

My advice would be to sell your mega and start pvping with the isk. The only reason to have pimp mission ships is if they are cost effective IMO. If it's not funding your habit it's in the way. Eve is a social game, get out there and be anti-social

Edited by: Laughlyn Vaughns on 09/10/2009 11:46:50 if u can only fit 4 guns on then i'd look at engineering to lv5 and electronics to lv5. then work on gettin a better repper and a nano pump, that shud see u through most lv4's, also navy mega does get big more grid/cpu soon plus an extra turret (on sisi) plus didnt it always used to be that faction ships require faction mods to fit properly? also i do remember "if u can't fit it properly, you shudnt be flying it"
p.s in missions ur best to remove as much 'easy' incomin dps as possible. i always kill frigs with light drones while concentrating on battlecruisers with my missiles/turrets its kept me alive this long

It would be handy if you could post your exact fitting here so we can give you tips on how to improve it. If you are tanking the level 4 missions just fine then consider reducing your tank and adding some damage mods.
Also can i ask what level your electronics and engineering skills are at?

Edited by: Alberico DeSandre on 09/10/2009 16:29:52 First, you want to get familiar with EFT, it really makes things like this clear. Second, use a SINGLE repper. Save up and get an Amarr Navy repper, it's the best thing you can fit aside from deadspace reppers and is very affordable.
You will get COMPARABLE performance using a single rep with more resist mods. You will free up a lot of powergrid for guns since you seem to have issues there. The slot usage is similar since instead of capacitor mods you fit additional resist mods.
Example of 1 rep [Megathron Navy Issue] Amarr Navy Large Armor Repairer Gallente Navy Armor Kinetic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Kinetic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Kinetic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Thermic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Thermic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Thermic Hardener Damage Control II
Tracking Computer II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun, Antimatter x 7 [empty high slot]
Capacitor Control Circuit I x 3
With max cap skills it's stable at 38% and tanks 842 vs serpentis. Has plenty of room for swapping tech2 vs faction. We're talking nearly 2k powergrid in excess AFTER fitting the full rack of guns.
Second Example with TWO reps [Megathron Navy Issue] Amarr Navy Large Armor Repairer Amarr Navy Large Armor Repairer Gallente Navy Armor Kinetic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Kinetic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Thermic Hardener Gallente Navy Armor Thermic Hardener Capacitor Power Relay II Capacitor Power Relay II
Tracking Computer II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun, Antimatter x 7 [empty high slot]
Capacitor Control Circuit I x 3
This one is cap stable at 50% with max cap skills and tanks 982 vs serpentis. This fit for me only has 240 powergrid left. I have a 3% powergrid mod and AWU4.
So for that extra 100 dps tank you give up a TON of powergrid. Keep in mind i don't support EITHER of these setups, as they are vastly overtanked for the way a non drone boat should play. Just using them to illustrate a point that you don't NEED dual reps to be heavily tanked, especially with a navy mega with its 8 low slots. The navy mega i've flown for almost half a year in level 4s sustains less than 300 tankable.

You asked why your damage is low. People told you, its becasue your using a terrible fit with no damage mods and only 4 guns. Then you whine that you wanted advice and not criticism?
Anyway railguns have fairly low dps and very low alpha damage even with max skills and a proper fit. My advice is to use a dominix for soloing level4's till you at least get t2 rails as you simply wont have the dps to do missions properly in a mega until then.

5 minutes looking for a fit would have saved you this horrible fit. Sell the faction mods before you get yourself killed. Fit this. It is good before you can use T2 rails
7x 425mm railguns best named you can afford, does not fit with tech 2, you will need to get faction lows for tech 2 rails to fit.
1x Tracking Computer II 3x Cap Recharger II
3x Magnetic Field Stabilizier II 3x Active Armour Hardener II 1x Large Armour Repairer II 1x Damage Control II
2x Auxillary nano pump 1x capacitor control circuit
4x Ogres 5x Hobgoblins
Just enough tank to survive any level 4 mission, enemies abound can give you a headache though. As well as some of the harder angels missions. But if you are shooting at guristas or blood raiders you can do it with your eyes closed.
500 dps from guns alone. If you are having a hard time surviving which you should not then switch out some magstabs and the damage control for some more specific hardeners. You will need to switch hardeners between missions. A slave set is also a good investment as it will give you some extra buffer. ----------------------------------------------- Mr.Kippling just launched a nuclear holocaust at third world countries! ... tank vs gank... you can have one or the other, never both. You are set for tank.. guess what your dps is not that good... since you are not full fit with guns, and have no dmg mods your dmg is correct. There is simply no way to keep that tank and increase your DPS.
If you are looking to mission run, use a dual lar domi, with drones or dual 350 gun fit.. The mega does not tank level 4's well with rails... you can do it with blasters, but getting into range makes lvl 4's take forever. ------- "Because the Dominix is the Chuck Norris of Eve!" |
