I guess that's why so called carebears 'take over' every MMO... They make up the vast majority of the paying customers.

Just tell me why do over 10 million people pay for it making Blizzard one of the MOST COMMERCIALLY SUCCESSFUL MMO COMPANIES IN HISTORY, just why?
Blizzard is actually THE most commercially successful MMO company in history, at least in the West. By a wide margin too.

This is a joke. I'm all for pvp, but one of the main reasons why I play this game is because it's not insanely addicting, and I don't have to play 12 hours straight to have some fun in it. I wouldn't want to either, because you have to admit, yes this game can be boring at times, and YES some of us do have lives - playing 8-12 hours straight sounds too much like something you would do in WoW. You fail.
WoW is so successful because it's insanely easy, straightforward, addicting, and offers instant gratification. Who doesn't like a game like this? Its simplicity makes it open to a larger agegroup, probably to anyone from ages 8+. For EVE, anyone with an undeveloped brain would never play it because it's beyond their comprehension. So the age range is probably more like 18+ for EVE.
Today I saw someone during class lecture playing WoW on his laptop LOL

Ok that is the funniest statement I have read all day. People didn't subscribe to it because the game was ****. When you have a large portion of your beta testers quit because their posts about glaring game issues were being deleted it might be a clue that something is wrong with your game. SB's concept was great but the implementation was **** poor. Couple that with the game servers melting in open beta or doing the same during guild seiges and I am going to guess that that is why that game failed. Even all the developers that Wolfpack hired on from the shut down UO team at Origins could not save it.
I don't really have a side in this debate as frankly I think it is silly and has been going on in all MMOs since they began back in the MUD days. But I really felt that a glaring inaccuracies in the original post had to be pointed out.

Point 1: you demonstrate here how popular PvE activity is in an MMO by showing how, when you separate PvE from PvP, everybody heads over to the PvE server and nobody shows up on the PvP server.
Point 2: again, you demonstrate here how a game will eventually die if it caters only to PvP players and ignores PvE.
Point 3: i've no idea about that but I'm pretty sure it didn't die for that reason alone. Much like the space based MMO around just before Eve came out (I can't remember its name, but I do remember The Enslaver played it!), it probably died because a better alternative came out.
Point 4: yes, just why are Blizzard one of the MOST COMMERCIALLY SUCCESSFUL MMO COMPANIES IN HISTORY, just why?
I also started in 2003. I remember the unrestricted PvP very well, especially in high sec (moo, space invaders, etc.). I'm guessing if CCP hadn't put in gate guns and concord, the servers would have shut down a very long time ago. But anyway, on the whole, you've proven the point you've tried to disprove: if a commercial entity wants to survive in MMO space, it's got to provide PvE content and viable limitations on the opportunities for grief, at least for a good proportion of its paying player base.
EDIT: I'm sorry, I didn't realise this was an irony post. I should have read down!

Bellum thank you for taking it in the spirit that it was intended, it is appreciated.
In my real EVE life my main (nope not saying who that is) has been in and out of this game since 2003 and is a 100% carebear mission runner, so scared of NPCs that it took me months and months of playing before I tried level 3s never mind level 4s. I still have no clue what many of the modules do and much of the EVE interface remains a mystery. With Eternal I ran through the new tutorials and learnt stuff (you can drag and drop with the skill queue - WOW).
Since the beginning I have seen many many PVP versus PVE posts, some made good suggestions but many have been pointless. EVE is a big sandbox and a big universe with room enough for everyone. Not everything is balanced and EVE is rarely a win win game; at best it can be a zero sum (someone wins because someone loses) with a small margin. On the PVP\PVE argument I have never liked the extremes from both sides, too often people fail to "walk a mile in the other's shoes" and see their point of view. On the PVE side I love L4s but they are an ISK printing machine and once you have scrapmetal processing 4\5 why would you mine? On the PVP side I have seen players just burn out because of the demands of 0.0 alliances - EVE is a game for fun and not a second job of 8 hour shifts "on the line - for the corp" (you can join the real marines for that).
On both sides there are some thin skins. When I posted the parody my fear was that it would be the PVPers who would take umbrage, instead as a PVEer I am humbled that they have seen the humour. I wish all the PVEers could have to. So maybe we should all chill a bit more, keep the e-peen in the trousers, and remember we all have one thing in common - we love EVE.
I will be keeping Eternal and the corp name (best 1.5 million ISK I ever spent) and using him for FW and to learn PVP, funded by my carebear main. His skills will be crap so he should not be too difficult to make go pop.
Fly safe, and be good. If you can't be good then be careful!
When I first read this thread I was like OH GOD, when will this stuff ever stop. CAnt we all jus tget along....
then I read this post.
I respect you. just for this post an dhow you ADMIT that you are looking at both sides. I respect that and just wish taht all teh PVPvPVE CRAP would stop. Ppl pay to play eve to play eve. THERE is no one but the person who PAYS to tell them how they should play. I personaly am jus tgettin ginto PVP after being in game for 2 years. I waited so long so I could have decent skills adn MOAR tools avalable to me.
but nicely said once again
Fly safe man and good luck

great thread but not everyone can join the marines, I can't for several reasons not least is the fact that I'm not a US Citizen. I think it more to do with the fact that I'm over 30 years old and am slightly overweight. I like beer more than getting shot at.
The arguement is actually a three way slanging match between pvpers, mission runners and industrial pilots. Add in the fact that SOMEONE HAS to do the logistics otherwise it all grinds to a halt anyway means that it could even be a four way arguement.
Instead I'd rather see individual players realise you don't actually need two, three or even six characters to play Eve online to it's full potential one character does not have to fit into a cookie cutter shaped hole and be one specific class.
Besides if you can do a level 4 mission in a tech 2 fitted tech 2 ship then pvp is only a t1 cruiser t2 fit away. Sure it's a slightly different ball game of course - the risks are different and there's no website telling you what to expect when you do find something (normally a carrier about to be hot dropped on to your fleet of ibises! Hello lemmings!!), but ALL aspects of the game are open to EVERYONE it just takes the will and the patience to learn the nuances in each discipline.
Altruism is displayed in the animal kindgom, lets have more of that in New Eden and make it a BETTER quality dark harsh universe out there.

Don't we have like 5000 or so pvp players who live in low and null sec space?

Either way, +1 for mention of Shadowbane, best game ever. Shadowbane didn't die because of carebears (I'm a converted carebear because of that game), it died because it had more bugs than the neighborhood hooker, and the learning curve was even more intense than Eve.
Huge cost of city loss relative to ease of sieging in the first couple years didn't help either. That and it was really easy to make a character that was worthless, and the lag/crashes in sieges were more epic than the sieges, and two thirds of everyone duped (in retrospect, I should have as well), and there was no semblance of class balance for about three of five years. Oh, and ****ing vamp scouts; so awful I can blame them for release even though they weren't in at release.
Sigh... RIP, Shadowbane.
