Edited by: Nishachara on 24/10/2009 13:46:36 Hi... Great guide witch inspired me to train for a bomber :D
I am a rather young pilot at the point of training where a lot of possibilities for t2 ship training open up for me... So among HIC/HAC(I dont really need vaga just yet)/bomber path to train i am considering to train for a bomber :D
But i have a dillema so i am asking this question... My ammar ana minmatar frigate skills are both on lv4 so witch bomber to train for ? From posts in this thread i figured out the differences (also tried some eft fitting for myself)adn still i can not decide :P
So a brief run down of my stile of play :D I mostly fly minmatar and i just recently started experimenting with speed tanking and nano ships, and imao i still lack the skills to fly them (RL piloting skills not ingame :D), so i am practicing from time to time that way of flying and piloting with my friends ...
So the dilema is: should i train for a hound(speed, exp damage(nice against armor tank ships and also some shield tank imao coz in the end(after the invus/rigs and other stuff) exp resist on shield tank tends to be the lowest...)and with hound i dont know colud i use speed in my advantage correctly. Or should i train for a purifier(EM damage/i would problably use it with MSE..)in witch i would get maybe more survivability...
So what do you think?
and again great guide, i will probably try these advices out in a month or so time :D

Edited by: Deva Blackfire on 24/10/2009 17:12:03 Go minmatar. You might have some problems vs ravens (explo is racial - but you can always bring EM bombs) but at least you get decent ceptors and good AFs. Or even better get both - it takes like a week to get one to lv5 so it shouldnt be a big problem.
Fitting wise both hound and purifier are VERY similiar. Wheras hound needs MAPC (or ancillary router) purifier sometimes needs co-proc (on the hardest fitting setups). On lighter fits (like mwd + injector) both should fit without a problem.

considering shield upgrades 5, and other fitting skills at 5, both the purifier and the hound only need a MAPC to go for a MSE+mwd combo (hound needs the very least a K-exhaust if you want to slam a bomb launcher there, when going for T2 launchers).
fitting a point in these setups is quite impossible, unless, that is, if you go for arbalests, altho I haven't tested it yet. ---

As a bomber pilot, I do not endorse this product and/or service.
You can kill industrials..yeah...SB is a great indy hunting ship, but you don't need a whole guide to explain that.
Aside from indies, your guide relies on the idea that the battleships you're fighting against a solo battleship with no light drones. How often are you going to actually run into a situation like this?
Better to have an Arazu/Rapier/Falcon friend.

hit the nail on the head. SBs shine in gang work with ewar in the mids. they are paper thin.

So far happened 69th time for battleship to myself, and a lot to my corpmate too ...
And even with small drone, its still possible to gank target EVEN before they have you locked, i just dont recommand it to newer user.
Small drone may seem like a no brainer to a pvper, but its not so much for a pve person.
When you solo, you have 20x more chance of finding a solo pve battleship than a pvp one (had like 3 of those so far, and those were mega .. with a set of ogre II and relying on heavy neut to kill small target)

The advantage for a solo SB pilot is that they can dictate the engagement. While it may not happen often, it will happen if you look hard enough for a solo ship that's either ratting, or overconfident in camping a gate, etc. I bet you in certain regions you can find at least a couple such targets within the course of a couple of hours of checking systems.

Nice guide Vala....and just confirming, you are a major pain out in fountain :-)
A couple of quick questions on bombs. I've read somewhere that a bomb can be killed by a smartbomb. Have you ever seen this done & is there a trick to the timing?

It is possible but very hard, because of the timing and the blast radius of the bomb. To my knowledge , you would need at least 2 smartbomb hitting it in a 0.5 sec window (they travel 3k/s) if on the landing point, and a 2 sec window when you smarties during the bomb travel ( aka just after to up to 6 sec after launch)
The only other problem is the smartbomb damage type, if you use smartbomb of the same damage type of the bomb..... you can forget about destroying it

as for the MSE + MWD fit it is possible to fit it perfectlly with just 2 small ACR rig's on a hound and purifier.
Edit: nice guide Vala=) <3

thx kilmatar
here a little update:
for those who would like to have a convo for more precise question, or any other thing concerning bomber, dont hesitate to send me a eve-mail. Sadly, some of my target took the habit of having multiple people convoing me trying to get me either off a potential kill or to give themselve the opportunity to kill me, therefore I have auto-reject on all the time.
I will answer to most eve-mail as soon as possible, but you gonna have to give me 1 day or 2 (I might show online but I am AFK in most cases)

I probably should eve mail you but what is the viability with bombs in high population areas.
Even though it is going to be in low sec, FW WT tend to have neut targets hanging around near gates.
Is shooting bombs at gate campers going to mess things up as I might hit the gate and the gate guns in the process?

To answer the question, sadly, as someone mentionned, bomb can only be used in 0.0 but they can be used for the same purpose. While bombing a gate with lots of people on it, while you probably wont kill anything with a single bomb beside mwd frigate which is possible but unlikly. But if in gang , you will indeed mess stuff up for your target, and generate panic to those not familliar with it.
I have seen and participated in operation where 2-3 bomb made 20+ ships of a 30 man jumps back trought a gate, kill 4-5 people in the process with the bombs, but mainly, leaving behind 4-5 battleship and other straglers and the like to be easely dealt with by a extremly smaller gang (6-7 ppl)
So to summarize, if in low-sec you cannot use bomb sadly, but yo can upgrade launcher and ballistic control in exchange, for soloing its a lot less interresting, but its still possible to kill target

More often than you think.
[Purifier, watercooler] Ballistic Control System II Nanofiber Internal Structure II Nanofiber Internal Structure II
Caldari Navy Warp Disruptor Small Capacitor Booster II, Cap Booster 75 Coreli C-Type 1MN MicroWarpdrive
'Arbalest' Siege Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo 'Arbalest' Siege Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo 'Arbalest' Siege Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo Bomb Launcher I, Electron Bomb Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Bay Loading Accelerator I [empty rig slot]
Its a very very tight squeeze and will need missile launcher rigs at level V unless I go for a republic or domination disruptor however I will need to look up how much they cost. With one of those though I could fill that empty rig slot so I wonder if a Warhead Calefaction Catalyst would be best used as the policarb gives next to no speed improvement.

If you have spare grid (and only looking at fit you should have some) you might want to try gistii MWD. It uses less cpu but more grid than coreli.

Pretty much a small modification of my fit, posted on the previous thread. I prefer to use A t2 warp disruptor, but you might want to explore the possibility to use a dread guristas warp disruptor.
The fun thing with those is the overheated range, that allow for maximal orbit speed and also, to catch stuff more often. I doubt 2 launcher rig would fit, but 1 launcher rig + 1 polycarb seem to be a good compromise for 4+ km range to disruption :)

Try as I might, I just cant get a poly carb and a bigger disruptor to fit plus the poly will only give an ever so slight boost to the speed so its just not worth it. I could drop the Warhead Calefaction Catalyst and fit that point for a modest drop in firepower which is what I might do but I am tempted to give the above a go first to see if it works. If not then there is always plan B and a better disruptor.

its possible, but unlikly to pop drone with a single bomb ( need some specific circomstance to happen), and it will rarely to never affect small drone because of their extremly low sig radius
Its possible to pop a few drone, but I wouldnt recommand to start any fight on the assumption that the "initial bomb" will pop drone out of the way, so if the drone you see are drone you are unlikly to be able to handle, for say a set of warrior II in space, I would be double carefull before engaging, and would do so in a pattern that would maximize the damage output of my ship and minimize my sig, so I can kill said target before he can even lock me (its possible )

You speak about the Low-grade Halo implants for all the obvious reasons.
- But what do you think about Low-grade Snake? will it be useful, will it improve your survivability? Better than a Halo set, or is being targeted slower more important than speed in this case? -> If being targeted slower is important, is it useful to only start MWD when being targeted?
- And can you explain me why you choose a hound above all others? just because of the damage type? or is it CPU/PG or the 2 speed mods in the low (snakes?)
Thanks for your insight!

I gonna be honest with you, this is really hard to answer because its highly circumstancial,:
Low grade snake, in most situation, will be better than low grade halo, becuase the decesive factor with this setup is speed, the more speed, the more evasivness.
It will aslo contribute to reducing the incoming damage by a fair margin, because of the velocity factor in most damage calculation(may it be missile or tracking)
The main difference is that you trade a part of damage reduction from the halo to an added speed: while you boost speed by a good margin, it will not give a damage reduction similar to the 20 ish% reduction to signature radius because its hilgy dependant on the speed you are moving at any given time.
FMwd when targeted is kind of the explaination of that principle, while I recommand that you start mwding to all beginner as prescribe in the initial part of the guide, there is indeed target that you can hold on the mwd to maximise the targeting delay of the target, as therefore you "tank" by not alowing the target to lock you.
Its just that agasint some target, like the armageddon, you need to get to maximal velocity fast to evade the pulse laser shots that gonna come as soon as you are targeted(and that hurt real bad)
the hound as bomber of choice for soloing is for several reason:
Highest base velocity and agility are extremly usefull the powergrid/cpu output are just perfect to squeeze the fit the damage type is among the best (thermal and kinetic being simply bad for soloing) slot layout is perfect, because it aim toward maximisation of efficiency, including the 2 speed mods in the lows, high overall resist in the base sheild...
to a small extent the 2nd best would be, in my opinion, the purifier, its jsut not as good as the hound in the speed/agility department, but it got same layout, more cargo space, good damage type, and slighty better built in tank
SO to conclude, snake would be a nice addition, but it would have would improve overall performance by only a slight margin over the halo .... but the halo are dirt cheap ... hence the preference

Ah, didn't know the Halo's where that cheap (will check when i get on-line)
On the Hound I can understand Speed and have an CPU/PG collision on all the others indeed, the Nemisis is Awful, teethgrinding, when it comes to fitting. Didn't look at resist as it is all about 1,5k EHP anyways
You said that Them and Kin are the worst damagetype's I just somewhat agree, might you not say that you should prefer on damage off/par with the type of damage the rats in the region (you hunt in) do? that way you might have some advantage taking out lonely ratters right?
Also found some squeeze fit for a 4 med SB. While taking down speed a bit, it does have some real handy room for some E-war. Making your chances in a 1vs1 quite a fair bit higher in terms of survivability.
I will go EFT warrior again when I get to my own PC, I seem to have missed the DG Warp disruptor. I was looking at RF/Domination for improved range/CPU but they where just as expensive as the rest of the bomber.
Also what is your best way to escape a bubble camp? Just hit MWD and go? I haven't looked up Sig.raduis tbh. so don't know how fast your targeted. Will look that up soon.
Also, when being in a group of SB (2-6) will you change you thought on RSD being useful (range scripts)? How many does it take to be effective? Or should a group prefer a mix of E-war?

Yeah, kind of what i wanted to express. Always better to use damage type that npc are the least likely to use in the region where you are .... and with 80% of the region npc doing either kinetic or thermal, with their awfull slot layout, and horribe fitting, manticore and nemesis are the worst for solo-pvp

Sadly this doesnt really aply in solo pew, mainly because 1 ewar slot wont do much agaisnt 95% of the targe: damp with range script is straight useless (under 24k to point) damp with lock speed just delay further the targeting at expense of a lot of speed tank ecm is chance based and very unreilable with only 1 fittted And painter/extender are good choice, but not as usefull as the full speed of the 3 mid/3 low ... for soloing

They are really cheap , and are like t2 in term of range, only using 4 cpu less

Hit mwd then immediatly cloak after it, you will get a full cycle of cloaked mwding at 2.7km/s, more than enought to escape most bubblecmap (cloaking doesnt shut down mwd immediatly, it let it finish its cycle)

In gang, I would immediatly have 1 SB pilot switch to an arazu with bonused damp and long range point, pack some sb with painters instead of point, and keep a few bombers with point ( kind of use them like interceptor with big damage but less speed)

Edited by: fivetide humidyear on 06/11/2009 15:54:07 excellent guide. I may have to train up matari frigate 5 in the near future.
One thing i've found useful to do when out either as recon for a gang or solo(ish) in a cov ops and i'm on a gun based target is to look at the target and work out what guns are fitted and how many vs slot layout. it doesn't take long to work out what guns look ilke especially t1 v t2 and thus the ammo options open. and it may well alter your tactics depending on what you see.

Wouldn't speed locking be a form of tanking on its own? I've been playing around with different fittings, and taking them out to try, and one of them has a speed lock damp on it with a damp enhancement rig with the disruptor instead of the cap booster. Uncloak at 23, launch bomb, point and damp, then start the torp barrage while keeping him from locking you. Start speed-tanking him once he has you locked.
