But I fear the download the day itself, last march it was a 1 gb download. When I try to upgrade from a normal client to sisi now, it sais I have to download 2.8 GB.
It takes me 2 hours to do that, thats not bad can cause I ccan just leave computer on and do other stuff, but when everybody start doing that (30k connections online any moment of the day), what kind of downloads speeds we gonna get then? Is there a plan for this?

i must admit though their trial client is amazing, only takes a few mega, and downloads and expands the game as you play.

I just checked, the current TQ > sisi patch is 500mb. 2,8gb is the full client since it can't find a proper patch.

On all the patch days, I'v only gotten max download speed on my connection (1,2mb/s) here. They use a high bandwith CDN network to deliver patches and the like, so bandwith should be good. _

I won't mind a 1GB patch so much so long as I can get a headstart on the download and have some nice stories to read while it downloads.
The most exciting thing about Apoc was being able to read a fantastic news broadcast while it downloaded. Really helped hype things up.

Seriously, WTF? My GOOD connection maxes it's downloads at about 100kb/s and that's ADSL, the best type of connection available in the area, the connection I'm on RIGHT NOW however maxes it's downloads at 6kb/s if the weather is good. 6kb/s.

X3 is still win. But it's missing that certain...human interaction part of the MMO equation that we all play EvE for. At least, I assume that we all play eve to interact with other humans while having fun.
And a pre-load (ala Steam's system) setup so that you can still play while getting the update would be awesome. Simply let players download the bulk of the update (models, textures, etc.), and then have the client run the normal update installer (which would download any extra files that are not quite complete) at/after a CCP-specified date.
Or just give us something that will take the entire download process to read/do. That's a bit easier.
Or you can just go play something offline for the time it takes. That's probably what I'll do.

Apocrypha was so big because it added 5000 odd systems to the game. By comparison dominion adds very little actual content and resources so the download will be of a far more reasonable size.
Having said that I do hope they allow us to d/l the patch a day or two before to reduce the load on their servers, or as chribba said a torrent would be great.

Sad times are these when small updates/patches are touted as good things.
I would love to DL 10 gigs of new EVE content. Even if i had to do it on an early 90's modem, i wouldn't complain.

If you really want to deal with the patch day download, you would just do the traditional method. CCP puts up a release candidate a week or so before D day, letting people download it over the week, perhaps even at night. Then on patch day you just need to download an updater that has the differences between the RC and final code, so graphics and even code that was not changed in the last couple of weeks would not need to be downloaded on patch day. |

Now now it's not you're fault that you're american.
But the graphics would have made up a big chunck of that patch so yeah thats probably the reason for the size. It will most likely be somewhere in the range of 500MB.

This patch is also a graphics update! There are new textures for planets, which include clouds that move. There are also models for the new objects such as TCUs and blockers.
So it wouldn't surprise me to find that the Dominion patch will be about 2-3GB. Something for me to do at work while everyone else is busy ironing out the post-patch kinks.

Or not, as rapidshare doesn't have enough bandwidth. Using all of rapidshare's bandwidth (240 gigabits/s according to Wikipedia) it would take hours to get the patch to all eve subscribers. Using only rapidshare's normally unused bandwidth (depending on how saturated they are normally) it could be weeks before everyone got the patch downloaded. Rapidshare just isn't designed for this scale of distribution.
CCP use llnwd.net (Limelight Networks) who have more than ten times the bandwidth of rapidshare (again, according to Wikipedia).
And that's ignoring rapidshare's normal 2GB file limit and incredibly slow download speeds for non-subscribers.

It doesn't matter. The first 2 weeks will be hardly playable with lag/bugs and the server going down every 5 hours not to mention on patchday itself the servers will be at least 8 hours down longer then initially said.Looking forward to the same old whine posts allready about this.
