Please stop whining about older players having unfair advantage, any advantage we have we earned the hard way. We played the game, good or bad, we played the game and did quit.
Stroll with me down memory lane:
I started playing in Beta 4, because I'm in the US I didn't get my official copy of Eve from EB Games till Day 8. There were so many promises and expectations that have yet to be fulfilled, but I'm still here, still waiting, still playing.
Old Players didn't have the advantage of all ships being on the market, readily accessible at good cheap prices. I bought my first frigate (Imicus) on 5/12/03 and paid 150K for it, the run about 75K now. 2 Miner 1s - 12.5K each and 11.5K for a 1MN AB I. That was bargain to, I flew thru 2 regions to get that price. Frigates were 2x to 3x the price they are now.
My first cruiser was a Exequror, cost me 5.2Mil purchased on 6/5/03, they run about 3.5Mil now. Projectile weapons were the **** back then, nobody used Rails and Blasters. Then M0o showed everyone what a Blaster setup could do and all of sudden Med Blasters were popular.
Nocxium was selling for 170 to 200, Iso was selling for 50 to 60. Mega was 10K and Zyd was 1200. Expanded CargoHold Is were like 225K.
Exploits? Scams? The only reason you all know about them now is because people like me that where here from the begining got taken to the bank and posted warnings. Things you new players take for granted didn't exist when I was new. Rats at every gate below .8, Rats in Asteroid Belts expect for 1.0. An not these weak ass 1 shot kill rats either, I lost many a frigate learning how to mine.
Safe space? Used to be on the border of every region was a 3 to 5 system no man's land. Yea even 0.0 space in what you now know as Empire. Hell used to be .1 system within 3 jumps of newbie starter systems. You would be amazed at how many of us never survive just getting to the next region back in those days. You all got it easy now.
Training packages? I can fly every races Frigates, Cruisers, and Indys, why? Because every other month the NERF bat swung and you had to start training all over again. 1 by 1 I have watched all the mighty fall and rise again. Right now it's Amarr's turn, I would next is going to be Gallante. Min had it good in the beginning, that is why as a Gal character I have higher Projectile skills then Hybrid. Drones used to suck then they became to powerful, now they are more or less balanced.
So stop whining, trust me just play the game and follow the cycles and you will stay ahead. We had to suffer way worse then you all and all the crap you all are waiting for in Shiva. We been waiting for since we saw it in Beta. Reverse Engineering anyone? Titans? Jump Drive? If you don't believe what I'm saying, just click and go to the last page of the forums and work your way forward.
These are the new forums so they begin about 2 or 3 months after launch, right about the time M0o was terrorizing the entire game. An for those of you wondering why so many people speak of M0o with either awe or hatred, again just click on the link to the last page of the forums. Better yet as Wrangler....LOL
So stop whining, learn to the play the game, just like we did and suck it up and drive on.

I remember the good ol' time with the 65km range sentry guns and pirates camping out of their rnage at stations
anyway, adapt or die. Whining leads nowhere.
Dear friendly customer... Can I have your money ?

i have to say i agree to the post. Stop whining.
I've been on since Jan 2, 2004. Not much longer and it will be one full year for me. I've watched the nerf bat fall on many things i liked, and i've learned the best way to be specialized is to not be specialized at all. Train up one type of ship and weaponry, then train another one till you have them all covered. Therefore, when your favorite type of play is nerfed you can switch to a differant ship and setup.

remember what it was like before super-hiways were added. before every constellation had a back door. also as said when most systems beyond the starter systems were .3 or lower all the way out to bordors of non-empire space. when you could mine spodium.. do any still remember what spodium or arknor even look like? I explored the galaxy in s Slasher. try that now.
I also started in beta 4, stuck with thru gold. got ****ed at castor and left.. but returned couple months later. oh and my alt won't let me train anymore. guess that makes me a noobi, since most newbies have more skills trained than me

Been around since October 2000, was in alpha and beta, could afford the game in June/July 2003.
Been wtfpwned by a pirate in .1, crying for help in the petition? Jebus, I didn't go into .8 until two weeks into the game. TWO WEEKS. That's how long it took me to even want to TOUCH the spawns there. Two weeks of mining Pyrox before I could afford an Incursus (which I lost trying to mine omber in .8 the day after). Then another two weeks of agent missions to get my first million. Then I traded for yet another two weeks using borrowed money from a corp mate, until I could afford a Vexor cruiser.
In the meantime, I got shot, killed, mauled and raped every time I ventured into 0.4. I mostly operated in Lonetrek and whoop-de-doo. m0o LOVED to camp the systems there. I had to listen to the current reports before going to Nonni for buying ships, because m0o used to camp a bottleneck system (before the time of highways, ofc). Yet I have nothing but love for m0o. They made the game interesting and CHALLENGING.
Damn sentry guns should be thrown out of < 0.5 systems. Them nublets are being spoiled.

Edited by: Lucre on 10/11/2004 12:31:23 Ee now we had it tough...
Had to logon at 0530, half an hour before we went to bed. Work 25 hour day mining Veldspar for corp *and* pay corporation for permission to dock. And then when we jumped, M0o would gank us before our screen loaded, singing "Pwned you, eat lag n00b!"
And you try and tell that to the young characters of today, and they won't believe you, they won't...

"Stop whining" may be a little harsh but I remember:
Having an Imicus and 60K isk and thinking I was rich. Meeting another ship in space made you nervous because there were so many low sec systems and CONCORD was lazy to say the least. Having to jump 10 systems w/o auto-pilot?: Check map for next system...warp to gate...approach gate....jump...repeat
However: Skill bug that allowed you to accelerate training. The cheap BS phase. Mining Ark in Empire space. Getting a 10.0 sec rating in about an hour.
Since skill training is not an XP tread mill, that means being a new player is like being a newborn in RL. Of course a 6 year old isn't going to have the wisdom or experience a 60 year old has. Also, the reason Xerox is bigger than Bob's Copier Co. is that they've been around longer. Doesn't mean they will always be on top though.
----------------------------------------------- 11/17/04 Are Formal Contracts in yet? Divisional Wallets? Taxes? BP lockdown? |

im not trying to say im a veteran or anything at eve as its only my 8th/9th day now.... now for a "new player" which i currently am im reading all the forum threads soaking up info and so on, the part that ****es me off the most is seeing people in local chat whinning and complaining about unfair advantages and so on. i have to admit once i complained as i didnt understand what happened when Concord blew me up but now i understand and i try to help people understand. Now what ****es me off the most is this... i check local chat, say hi to a few people and so on. then someone asks me for a pvp so of course as i only got a frig i refuse to... then someone teams up with me (Gang thingy) and i never knew what it was so i accepted it. then he started shooting and i was just waiting for concord to come in and intevien, but after some time, my shields where more than 90% screwed they didnt show up, so i fired my light missiles at him and after a few rounds he blew up and got ****ed stating that i had an unfair advantage due to the fact that i have been playing more when this guy has been a member of some corp for more than a month. this really ****es me off! and im sure there are many more people out there who feel the same as me!
my ship specs are: Ship: Kestrel Hi Slots: 4 x Missile Launchers equipied with piranaha light missiles the medium slots only contain 1 basic shield and the low slot conaints a basic cargo enchancer. and he had a bloomin merlin! ffs! this ****es me off so mucch! sorry for swearing too much guys im sur you understand how i feel...

I hear you Lucre, why I remember hauling ore to the station up the gravity well both ways. I can't remember the name of the system, think it was Mari or Passari something like that. Just remember losing a couple cruisers there. I lost a good 2 cruisers and 3 frigates to M0o before they started thier "Kill List". Boy was I ****ed, at the same time I also remember the joy I felt when I successfully ran one of they blockades.

1) Apoc's Tankability 2) ECM 3) Insert Your Favorite Thing Here.
Just the ones that affected me during my time in Eve:
1) Projectile accuracy. 2) Removing of high end ore from within Empire (oh how I miss mining Gniess in Rorsins over in the Sing Liason Region.) 3) Hybrid and Projectile ammo with no range and cap modifiers. 4) MWDs on Industrials. 5) 0.0 Rats that only used 1 weapon. 6) Chaining spawns where ever there was a spawn!!! 7) etc, etc, etc.

I remember when warping to a station/gate would randomly drop you anywhere from 15km to 85km away.
It sucked a world of balls until you had the skills for MWD'ing...
on the other hand, I also remember the weapon mod uber bug, where I had a +13x damage modifier with 250mm's on a thorax, and could one-shot NPC cruisers in Outer ring, and were farming them for CU Vapor miners, which sold for around 5 mil each. Good times.
So, we had it good, and we had it bad, in different amounts. .

I remember the days when if you owned a BS with a bunch of guns, you were uber. You could take down anything smaller than you in two seconds flat. These were the days before the tacking nerf. A big gun that hit all the time for a good dmg would mean death to anyone and anything. Frigates were vaporized before they could do anything. The best thing a frigate could do was fire as many cruise misiles as possible before it was vaporized. A torp hit to a frigate meant you were instantly podded from splash dmg.
I am jsut sad that I could not get a BS before the trackign nerf. Now I need a raven to even pretend to hit frigies with cruise misiles and that after I web the bastards.

older players SHOULD have an advantage LOL thats the whole point of an mmo, the longer you play the stronger you become.
take that away and everyone would say the game was empty and pointless, I'm all about rewarding older players, I think that you should be a spec of dust for the first few months in any onliner, thats what gives you the drive to carry on, the promise of more and more.
as you grow stronger the game changes with you whioch gives it more lastability. a noob has no power at all but also has no responsibility in the eve world at all, no matter what corp a vet jooins he will imediately be inundated with loads of responsibility because he has the sp to do it.
people who play eve for like 2 years should be elivated to being gods
not many people will play that long, online games have a big customer turnover so rewarding loyalty is a must. Wayz: cmon X hurry up I aint got all day! Twisted Xistance: oh yeah lol.... anyway, you have got all day you benefit scrounging jobbless schmoe! Wayz: too chey :) |

Edited by: Dagoroth on 10/11/2004 18:04:28 I imagine that the reason this 'nerf bat' gets wielded so often is because players are constantly complaining about stuff. As you 'vets' were the only ones around back then I guess it was you guys doing the complaining. Seems a bit hypocritical to whinge about newer players doing now exactly what you used to do then. I'm sure the game was different when you started but it was like that for everyone so whats the big deal ? - its not like it's still hard for you but easy for the newbies.

I remember when MWD battleships could outrun frigates because frigates couldn't fit MWD's.
When you could tap the MWD button as you came out of warp and be up at full speed instantly.
Then they nerfed them.
When torpedos would auto-pod the target. When you could drag missiles in front of people and CONCORD would insta-gank the shooter. When missiles couldn't fly round asteroids.
So many changes, 90% of them for the benefit of the game - long may it continue.

The advanced players are technically supposed to have every advantage economically, industrially and logistically.. but only so they can employ newer people. It just isn't set up to deal with the current level of industrial intensity pursued by most casual griefers ingame.

The Problem with eve is really not that old players have an advantage, it's supposed to be that way, but that you cannot really ever catch up to them as long as they keep playing - at least I don't think that people will ever run out of skills to train.

You can catch up to them, just pod'em repeatly till you catch them without a clone. It does happen, doubt anyone else will ever admit to being this stupid but I have no shame so I will.
Was getting hunting by a couple pirates in my former base system (D87?? damned if I remember it was 8 months ago) Anyway they caught me slipping in a asteroid belt and podded me. I was so ****ed for getting caught flat footed I logged off right after my clone woke up 25 jumps away.
Next day I logged on and started the long track back to my base, all the time planning my revenge. Got back to my base, jumped into my spare Battleship and loaded up for bear. I found the guy that podded me a couple systems over camping his usual gate. We got to fighting and 2 of his buddies warped in and together they podded me again.
That's right you guessed it, when I logged back in I forgot that I hadn't bought a new clone the night before. So this time I died without a clone and yea it cost me. I've never made that mistake again, but somewhere there is a newbie that has now caught up to me :-(

Oh, yes you can. The uber clone costs an absolutely stupid amount of isk, so each podding badly hurts a vet player in the pocket, compared to only 2 mill for a 12 million skillpoint clone.
Additional to that, having level 4 in skills isn't that much different from having level 5 in skills, in terms of actual combat effectiveness, whereas the level 5'er has like five times as much skillpoints invested.
Lastly, you will find that most vets have a broad spread of skills, and when in combat or something, they are obviously not using most of them (eg, Gallente Industrial 5 ain't gonna help you when you're in a Megathron), and thus a more specialized, newer character can quite likely have the advantage over them in functional skillpoints, even though their skillpoint total is a lot less.

Well Ok, I never bought an uberclone, but suppose you can afford cloning that high and just keep training stuff people can't really catch up to you...
And Level 5 skills aren't essential on most things, but a lot of new stuff coming out has very high skill requirements...

hay they might get strunger but some dosent get richer hehe like me im strung with skills and all etc but im sertenltly not rich i have 1mil isk

Originally by: wayz older players SHOULD have an advantage LOL thats the whole point of an mmo, the longer you play the stronger you become.
take that away and everyone would say the game was empty and pointless, I'm all about rewarding older players, I think that you should be a spec of dust for the first few months in any onliner, thats what gives you the drive to carry on, the promise of more and more.
as you grow stronger the game changes with you whioch gives it more lastability. a noob has no power at all but also has no responsibility in the eve world at all, no matter what corp a vet jooins he will imediately be inundated with loads of responsibility because he has the sp to do it.
