Yea. Imagine if First Data's SQL servers failed over the same way CCPs SQL servers failed over.

It's a running joke that the Eve servers use hamsters as a power source.

Also, I believe the hamsters are computing everything, not just powering the computers. _____ ^ That is a sig line. It should be there without me having to put one in. |

They should fire the hamsters and instead burn Icelandic Kronur. At least I know paper always produces a specific amount of energy per kilo. More reliable in my opinion. And perhaps cheaper.

"Our SQL Server failed over."
I think you mean it just failed, no over about it.
And your using SQL Server? Come on. There's your problem. Invest in a real database like Oracle. I will hook you up. Give me a call. I would tell you that the automatic failover to standby works perfectly except I have never had my primary site fail. ------- "The strong are often wrong but the weak are never free." |

Edited by: CCP Valar on 09/12/2009 04:05:47 Hi everyone.
I'm Valar, the senior virtual world database administrator for EVE Online.
I'd like apologize for the outage we earlier tonight. We had a hard crash in the SQL Server engine and our high availability system does not work in the case of this crash bug as the server does not fail over properly. This is the same issue as last Saturday and also the same issue as the Sunday the weekend before.
We are working with Microsoft on this problem. This issue is both at the highest priority level of their SQL Server and Windows product groups and it will be addressed as soon as they have a solution for us.
Note: To "fail over" is a technical term an operation on the type of SQL clustering we use, but that is called Failover clustering. (This is for those who think I'm confusing "fall over" and "fail over", I assure you that our server did not "fall over") ---- Senior Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games |

Considering the fact you are working on it at 4AM your time, thanks! Aside from all the whiners, those of us that realise things can go wrong beyond someone's control, do appreciate the effort you put in.

I must be one of those hard-working Americans who don't take 3 week long 'holidays' who implicitly understands that my work is appreciated simply by the fact that I have customers.
In fact, at my companyÆs Christmas party this weekend, IÆll be awarding our annual ôI.T. Never Sleeps Awardö to someone in my department who, wellà didnÆt get much sleep. And there are four people in my department who are more than qualified for this award.
And finally, things do NOT go wrong beyond someoneÆs control. That is illogical. This is software and hardware. Someone caused this to happen. It is not blind luck or chance that is causing it. There is a root cause and there WILL be a logical solution to this. Something at the scale that CCP is at, there will be a fault. And there will be someone to blame. Their investigation will go further into depth than what a typical user of IT would expect to happen to solve the reason why they donÆt have video in a Skype connection, other than ôReboot your PCö.

No, the server is just crashing without any warning. This is a bug in either Windows or SQL Server. Microsoft is working with us on debugging it. ---- Senior Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games |

I'm sure you already are, but in case you're not take a look at PAL and SQL Nexus both good tools for diagnosing what you're dealing with.
