I'm honestly fairly surprised that CCP has the game servers and the website reliant on the same infrastructure.
People go looking for info on the game servers, and whatever brought them down also shut the website down for a while...

$14.99/30 days = $0.50 a day/23 hours per day = $0.02 per hour. since the last expansion we have seen what? 30 hours of abnormal down time? $0.02*30 = $0.65 I hope you enjoy your fun size snickers bar...

They should fire the hamsters and instead burn Icelandic Kronur. At least I know paper always produces a specific amount of energy per kilo. More reliable in my opinion. And perhaps cheaper.

"Our SQL Server failed over."
I think you mean it just failed, no over about it.
And your using SQL Server? Come on. There's your problem. Invest in a real database like Oracle. I will hook you up. Give me a call. I would tell you that the automatic failover to standby works perfectly except I have never had my primary site fail. ------- "The strong are often wrong but the weak are never free." |

Edited by: CCP Valar on 09/12/2009 04:05:47 Hi everyone.
I'm Valar, the senior virtual world database administrator for EVE Online.
I'd like apologize for the outage we earlier tonight. We had a hard crash in the SQL Server engine and our high availability system does not work in the case of this crash bug as the server does not fail over properly. This is the same issue as last Saturday and also the same issue as the Sunday the weekend before.
We are working with Microsoft on this problem. This issue is both at the highest priority level of their SQL Server and Windows product groups and it will be addressed as soon as they have a solution for us.
Note: To "fail over" is a technical term an operation on the type of SQL clustering we use, but that is called Failover clustering. (This is for those who think I'm confusing "fall over" and "fail over", I assure you that our server did not "fall over") ---- Senior Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games |

I must be one of those hard-working Americans who don't take 3 week long 'holidays' who implicitly understands that my work is appreciated simply by the fact that I have customers.
In fact, at my companyÆs Christmas party this weekend, IÆll be awarding our annual ôI.T. Never Sleeps Awardö to someone in my department who, wellà didnÆt get much sleep. And there are four people in my department who are more than qualified for this award.
And finally, things do NOT go wrong beyond someoneÆs control. That is illogical. This is software and hardware. Someone caused this to happen. It is not blind luck or chance that is causing it. There is a root cause and there WILL be a logical solution to this. Something at the scale that CCP is at, there will be a fault. And there will be someone to blame. Their investigation will go further into depth than what a typical user of IT would expect to happen to solve the reason why they donÆt have video in a Skype connection, other than ôReboot your PCö.

No, the server is just crashing without any warning. This is a bug in either Windows or SQL Server. Microsoft is working with us on debugging it. ---- Senior Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games |

See now another certain MMO I play would have told us all that there was no server issue and that every single one of us had simultaneous connection/system issues on our end. All the while having the server(s) down for more than an hour.
Despite peoples complaining and the fact that the server has gone down 3 times recently CCPs speed at getting the server back up and being as straight forward and candid about the problems that are occuring on their end is refreshing. Heck if you put 30k+ users on a single server on any other MMO it wouldn't just crash, it'd drop through the floor.

I really hope that Microsoft gives you the same customer service that we receive from CCP. I hope that that you file a "Stuck Petition" with them and then they move it into a pile which will be looked at a couple of weeks. And their belated response should be "there's nothing wrong on our end, and our sever logs show that everything was normal. And we wish you a speedy recovery." Oh God, that would be,... absolute justice.

Can I hope that doesn't happen, as that would mean that the bug won't get fixed, or are you forgetting that little detail? Unfortunatley clusters have a nasty habit of doing that. One elemment gets its knikkers in a knot. Throws its hands up in the air and lobs everything at its counter-part.... including whichever operation caused it to failover in the first place. Backup element takes over, promptly gets its knikkers in the same knot, throws its hands up and passed back to the other element. You end up with them bouncing up and down passing a hot potatoe between them.
Breaking the cluster. Rebooting both sides and reestablishing the link fixes it. However stopping it from happening is, a toffee hammer sized problem. Small, fiddly and a right bugger to find.
Used to see it when someone idiot did a really processor heavy SQL query (SELECT ALL FROM * on a multi-TB table), a conditional that would occasionally spit out a malformed querey and break the whole box in one or finally a conditional malformed that would lock a thread solid repeat until box is truly chocked.
Of course, clusters don't always fail over properly to begin with.

Yea. Imagine if First Data's SQL servers failed over the same way CCPs SQL servers failed over.
Credit card processing worldwide could be halted for the duration.
Mainframes make the world go round. If they're more modern it'll be AIX/HP-UX/et al running either DB2 or for the really adventerous Oracle. Sure you might find some IIS/MS-SQL in there for frontends but there you go.
Such systems tend to work on batch processing though. I really wouldn't want to have to wait 24hrs to know if i'd hit something :)
