It certainly was beautiful, but the story was just a tad to predictable. The characters lacked a bit of depth, i'd say.

Furry refer to people having wires crossed and failing to differentiate between people and animals, animals in human form or vice versa, most have fur hence the term.
In no way does this get away from being a furry lovefest for these cats being without fur.
Cameron knew what he was doing when he made these cat creatures and blue at that. I wonder if he did a survey to get the lowest common denominator for what people would throw money at for cute/cool factor, blue people are very much in fashion as are cat people, just check out any asian MMO.

I was a bit skeptical, but I honestly haven't enjoyed a movie this much in years. Also, you simply must see this movie in a cinema.

Edited by: Imperator Jora''h on 24/12/2009 16:51:02 The movie is 'Dances with Wolves' on c-ack and acid.
That is not a bad thing though (inasmuch as I do not mean it to slam this movie).
Like others here I was pretty dubious but based on word-of-mouth from here and elsewhere I had a go and really enjoyed it.
The story is pure 'Dances with Wolves' except in space. The particulars are of course different but at the root that is precisely what this is. That can be good or bad depending on your view.
The acting was ok. Nothing to write home about but not awful either. In a word: adequate.
It is the visuals you are here for and they are spectacular. Ordinarily I find 3D movies a gimmick but this one worked very well and occasionally I found myself wanting to wave bugs on the screen away from my head (not kidding).
The attention to detail is stupendous and obvious. Better, any sci-fi movie (well, in particular sci-fi) requires a suspension of disbelief to work well. The myriad little fiddly bits and details and things working the way you might expect pulls this off in spades. Add in it is just a jaw droppingly beautiful and fully realized world. Thankfully gone is the black/white or grey/brown (with a splash of dark green) color scheme of all too many sci-fi movies. This one is off-the-charts colorful.
Fortunately the aliens are not actually furry (thank Og).
And for those of us who are gadget geeks and whatnot this movie does computer displays and military hardware better than any I can think of. Futuristic but believable both in looks, function and how they are operated.
All in all a good time. I rarely drop the exorbitant fees to see a movie these days ($15 for parking, $14 for ticket, $8 for popcorn and a soda) but this is one that definitely needs a big screen treatment (to the point I may need to buy a 60" panel when this comes out on DVD). Near three hours long too so some value here rather than the eke out 87 minutes many movies do.
Bottom line: If you play internet spaceships (safe bet here) go see the movie!

Well-crafted propaganda.
Of course, the sheep will oooh and aaaah at the special effects not knowing they are being programmed. '
At they, and the outcome of that programming, is certainly predictable.

And so is Jack and the Beanstalk, which ever version you see/read.
Take the story for what it is. Dances with wolves :D
I like the fact that the movie had very good depth of view, in the forests there seemed to be more on screen that could possibly be there. Like a window onto that world. Very impressive, but I dont think its worth watching if it wasnt in 3d. I wouldnt have paid to see it if it wasnt.

Edited by: Eran Laude on 25/12/2009 20:24:08 Went into the cinema somewhat skeptical of Cameron's ability, came out utterly entertained. Sure, the plot was quite predictable, but you know what? It was goddamn awesome. The 3D effects are sublime, and I stupidly felt like interacting with a lot of it - that's how good it was. Best film I've seen this decade and straight on to my personal top 5.
And yes, you have to see this film in a cinema. I'm going to go see it in IMAX hopefully, if I can get tickets any time soon! -----

The plot was a bit predictable, but most movies are. The acting was not horrible, it was good (not the best, but eh, its a movie).
The story-line and the effects where damn good, to say the very least. I'm definitely going to the theater to watch this one, and buying the blu-ray when it comes out.
As far as sci-fi believability, it was extremely well done.
Overall: 9/10 (most if not all movies rate 4 to 5 out of 10 imho).

Edited by: Cyprus Black on 26/12/2009 05:50:00 The trailers don't do this movie justice.
But yeah a third of the way through the movie when Jake Sully was being introduced and taught the Na'vi ways, the first thing that popped into my head was "Dances With Wolves".
One gets the distinct underlying theme of the old west forcing natives Americans off their land. Even a few of the Na'vi language hair and clothing styles bear similarities to the Indians from Dances With Wolves.
I most especially liked the part of the movie where Jake Sully was integrating himself into the Na'vi society. Learning how to hunt, how to move, the ways of life, and how to fly one of those bird things. I was hoping this bit would last a long time and was constantly annoyed with going back to the human world. I suppose that was intentional though.
That bit lasted a long time. As long as it should have which is good.
The Na'vi race were very believable. Once you got over the fact that they're purely CGI, they felt like real people that evoked an emotional response. They became less CGI and more characters that one could identify and empathize with. Every slight movement and facial expression was well done.
I'm definitely going to go see this movie again. ___________________________________ "In the land of predators, the lion does not fear the jackal." -Dexter |

I don't hate you, nor think you're bitter, and whether or not you're sucking anyone's weenie isn't my business.
but damn dude, underneath the amazing CGI, it's just another sci-fi movie with rather cliched storyline that everyone and their dog have seen a million time, this movie is as much of a propaganda as that orange on my desk which I'm about to eat. Despite occasionally posting something that has merit, this is way too crazy even for you.

Visually its spectacular, not seen anything like it and its raised the bar.
As for the story, give me a break, contrived, clichTd, trite, and predictable, cant wait for family guy or south park to send it up, cartman would love the tree huggers.
If it wins an oscar for anything more than special effects then it will be hilarious, just like Titanic sweeping the boards, roll on march, it promises to be a hoot.

I haven't enjoyed a movie that much in a very long time. And it was the first movie I ever saw in 3D, so it was really impressive.
Albeit the story was kind of predictable, the events and underlying story were fascinating. The landscape, the animations, the characters, were all very nicely done.
All in all, a good movie, understandable yet complex story, and some damn beautiful effects and nicely written battles to top it all off.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it for what it was, but complex? The story was hackneyed beyond belief, the effects are what sets it apart, complex story, not even close.
