An original twist would be if the blue man group ate humans and they still won our sympathy.
That would be just plain stupid

Why would it? It's still their planet, their ways and humans just another tasty treat. The noble savage has been done to death, why not some shades of gray where the history about real cannibalism is highlighted and discussed, them eating what they vanquish to gain its strength.
Not that part. The gaining our sympathy part.
Slade
How so? Some native american tribes tortured the **** out of their captives and they still get my sympathy 10 times out of 10.

I understand how your logic is flowing, but I am going with the thought that it would not work in the story setting set forth in Avatar.
I do not see a big "evil" corporation bent on making as much profit as possible, on planet hundreds of light years from Earth, where the corp is the only one that is really going to have contact or up to date information about what is going on on said planet feeling sympathy for unyielding natives. I find, in that situation, that the people running said corporation, would not feel sympathy for sentient aliens that slaughter and eat their workers.
But I am sure that you could come up with a setting where your ideas would work. Say like the District 9 setting. So I apologize for my more then ambiguous slant on your original concept, but I just did not see it working in the setting set forth in the Avatar storyline.

At the risk of sounding harsh, you're a ****** if you think its the best SF you've seen in years, that or it's the only SF you've seen in years.
Funnily enough I just watched District 9 tonight and its superior in every respect except effects and running time.
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Avatar for what it was but it's nothing special other than how it looks

I watched quite a few SF movies lately and I also think that District 9 was a great movie, but I still prefer Avatar over D9.

One annoyance about this movie that I just can't get past............the title.
My kid and I have been fans of "Avatar: The Last Air Bender" for years. There is even a movie in the works, it has been cast and production is underway. Unfortunately, THIS 'Avatar' movie has come out first, and will cause no end of confusion to little kids ( and their parents ) who are fans of the "Airbender" cartoon.
Oh well. Such is life, I suppose.

Now imagine how cheesed off the writer of Hellraiser was when that hack Clive Barker stole his title and left him to name his work Hellblazer instead. It was not even fit for the big screen and the movie, killing a possible franchise, was named Constantine instead.
Though as I check some facts I see a rumour about an actual sequal of Constantine, back from the dead, hopefully with the correct John Constantine this time...

It might not be the best SF movie but for me it's the best overall movie, I just like movies with romance in them, and epic **** like capturing the toruk to ride (Or in bleach the people gaining new powers n ****). --------------------------------------------- Xeross' ventures into EVE |

I was not excited about the 3d portion, and my unhappiness was confirmed. Eyestrain, not necessary, cumbersome glasses. One of the worst parts of the 3d aspect of it was the TINTED glasses - they're supposed to be emphasizing this rich, lush environment and then they bring the brightness out of it. I spent most of the movie with the glasses off.
I got the feeling they truly wanted to concentrate on the message - destruction of nation by the virus that is humankind. But, they ended up having to draw away from it so much...because when you make a $.5b movie, you have to make money back.
At any rate, excellent setting, excellent themes, excellent cinematography, but unoriginal plot and unoriginal characters. First half of the movie was much better than the last.

Awesome visuals (3D) but so-so story. Sigourney Weaver by far the most memorable character which is kinda sad as she is not a main character. Have to watch : yes Watch twice : neh Best bit : Voice-over when capturing Toruk (even though you don't get to see the actual capturing ) Would I do blue chick : Yep, but only in a blue body, otherwise it would be too creepy.
Buy District 9 and watch dozens of times : **** yes !

Agreed, this is one of the few movies that you must see at the Cinema in 3D, IMAX if possible, this movie will sadly lose quite a bit when it transfers to Blu-ray. |

This.
I suspect that Avatar was the perfect springboard for electronics companies to start hyping their 3d compatible televisions like the ones they were showing at the CES earlier this month.

I have to give a small pointer here about where home entertainment tech is now heading. 120 HZ full HD TV:s are a requirement if you want to watch 3D blueray movies at home.
Not that i would recomend anyone buying a tv to waste their precious free time with.
But the point is that if you want the best home avatar experience in the future.. that is how it is.
