I have to say definetely one of the best new movies i have seen lately, had an awesome time watching. ;)
But back to all the various interpretations of the movie, world govermnet...religion, wants to justify sth. .... I mean common, get a job. Next thing thats gonna happen is people are gonna start seeing jesus in their burgers and going crazy.
All these guys that think they know it better than anyone else and have to tell them the "truth". Its not hard to see 5000 different meanings and reasons behind any movie background etc. . It all comes down to the person viewing and his personal history and experiences, I atleast hope that most people are still capable of taking theyre one conclusions or motives behind any media.
As stated before, dont let your day get ruined by some 2012 prophets and just enjoy it. Sharing is a nice gesture. Stupid but nice... |

Best advice to anyone planning on seeing this movie who hasn't yet:
Don't go in looking for an underlying message, deep story, or political finger-wagging. Just go in and enjoy it for what it is.

Seen it three times--last night in IMAX 3D. Incredible experience.
The list my friends and I came up with was: Dances With Wolves + Fern Gully + Last Samurai + Pocahontas.
Still loved it, though. I haven't gone to one movie this many times since LotR.

Saw it with the missus in 3D over the Christmas period.
We both really enjoyed it...
I was surprised at how quickly the film went. It's a long film, but the time does whip by.
I'd definitely recommend watching it in 3D in a cinema. Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |

Go watch it on the *smallest* 3D screen you can find. The really big ones eat up too much light.
Also, the thing with not knowing where to look can perhaps be resolved by sitting near the rear of the theater.
I get the same thing when I sit too close to a regular 2D screen.

That is why I think that the entire movie was a complete satyr of the United States political spectrum
Cameron is too good of a film maker to use a name like that if he was trying to be serious. That or it was used to assist in keeping a blatantly preachy movie comical.

Have any of you guys slashing at "Unobtainium" looked at real life superconductor names?
"YBCO" is one of the easier shorthands to remember. It stands for "Yttrium barium copper oxide".
Originally by: "Wikipedia" From about 1993, the highest temperature superconductor was a ceramic material consisting of thallium, mercury, copper, barium, calcium, and oxygen (HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8) with Tc=138 K.
In February 2008, an iron-based family of high temperature superconductors was discovered. Hideo Hosono, of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and colleagues found lanthanum oxygen fluorine iron arsenide (LaO1-xFxFeAs), an oxypnictide that superconducts below 26 K. Replacing the lanthanum in LaO1-xFxFeAs with samarium leads to superconductors that work at 55 K.
I can just see how names like that wouldn't be popular with common grunts, and "Unobtainium" has a long history of being used for a magical material that can't, actually, be obtained - and in the case of Avatar they send a mining fleet 5 years through space just to get at it. It can't get any unobtainabler than that imho. There's another Wikipedia article about the history of Unobtainium that you can go and read up if you like.
For the time being I'll choose to believe that the Screen Writer was more aware of this than you and chose to find a name that wouldn't make his characters look silly trying to pronounce, while still being plausible.
There's a lot of awesome stuff in that movie where the director, in fact, is messing with your minds that you probably have missed, e. g. the plant Jake's Avatar first touches that retracts into the ground. Familiar to you? Not? It's on an alien world, right, therefore hitherho unseen fauna.
Wrong. It's a Christmas Tree Worm. They live in corals.

For those that watched in 3D, did it look blurry for you as well during the fast scenes? I could hardly see what was going on sometimes, like watching a movie on a bad LCD screen.

Alice in Wonderland does look more promising, surely Burton will make better use of the 3D than Cameron did.
I went for the 3D, too little of it really, good but too poorly used. Story was **** as expected, though as been said the details were nice, glowy stuff and all.

I went to see it between Christmas and New Year in the UK when it was first out in 2D. It was absolutely epic.
Then I went back to see it in IMAX 3D last weekend, holy ****.
I've always been a move buff, and I head to the cinema a lot... usually at least 4 or 5 times a month. This is by far the best movie I've seen in years.
I'm not usually one for "Science-Fantasy" as it's been labelled, but I had no problem at all with the storyline or setting. Effects and HD 3D aside, it was far more rich and immersive than most of the **** that's come out of Hollywood for the last decade. Some people have *****ed about acting and storyline, but frankly there was nothing wrong with either, in my opinion.
As for the visuals, I don't think anything will come close to this for years. The motion capture used does a superb job of reflecting emotion in rendered faces, and the rendered environments and effects are astonishing.
My only advice to people is to see it in a cinema, in 3D if possible, or in IMAX 3D if you have the ability. In terms of visual effects, its as ground breaking as A New Hope was when it was first released, and no TV set can really to it justice.

Lets be honest V, as visual entertainment its the new standard nothing comes close, but the story is 3rd rate, if it was a book it would it would get slaughtered.

This is what I thought after the first reviews. I'm sure the movie does this very well and is very entertaining, but I just can't get myself interested in it. I was hoping it to be something original, that would break the current trend of remakes. In a way it is original, but in the most shallow way possible.

Originall movies, today?
Just about every potential story has been put on the silver screen. I mean come on, even back in the 50's directors could not come up with original ideas
Seven Samurai vs The Magnificent Seven anyone?

Why would it? It's still their planet, their ways and humans just another tasty treat. The noble savage has been done to death, why not some shades of gray where the history about real cannibalism is highlighted and discussed, them eating what they vanquish to gain its strength.

A original twist would have been that the blue ones haggled for mining rights at first, quickly acquired the technology and know-how to mine themselves and then kicked the humans out because they wanted all the money for themselves for more technology.
And while there may be no original story left, rehashing the same old story over and over and over and over and over again is simply lazy, boring and uncreative. Stories are like colors: Mixing and matching for new shades to keep up some diversity and variety instead of trying to find another pattern of same old black and white. --------

At the risk of sounding harsh, you're a ****** if you think its the best SF you've seen in years, that or it's the only SF you've seen in years.
Funnily enough I just watched District 9 tonight and its superior in every respect except effects and running time.
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Avatar for what it was but it's nothing special other than how it looks

Sometimes people just need to be told the truth.
Joking aside people need to get over the "special effects = win" mentality. If the exact same script was delivered by an unknown with a B movie budget people would be lining up to poke fun and laugh at how pathetic it was. The effects are everything here.
I really enjoyed Avatar as a visual spectacle, but the story was atrocious, like I said earlier District 9 has it beat every day of the week and twice on sundays, but Camerons well dressed turkey looks like its going to get a few Oscars if the Globes are an indicator, if Avatar can get Globes then what should District 9, or something like Moon, with Sam Rockwell, get.
Bottom line, enjoy it for what it was but don't wack off over it as the best thing on the big screen since god knows when, because it simply isn't.

what the bloody ****?!?! did I see a different movie in the wrong 3d? or are my eyes and brain just not wired together?
I figured if there was a forum on the internet I could say avatar was pretty bad and get a general agreement it would be the eve forum. but no I think I just logged into wow or something.
or is eve just full of a bunch of people who wish they were blue cat people having blue cat people sex? oh and riding horseys, gotta love riding horseys!
as for the plot a) the trailer gave almost all of it away (it pretty much shows they fall in love, and I'm pretty sure it showed them riding the superbeasts), b) full of holes. take off and nuke it from orbit anyone? I think I seen that phrase a few times http://eve-search.com/search/nuke%20it%20from%20orbit if it isn't full of plot holes then it might as well be a plot doughnut. also wasn't the unobtanium under the big tree, why did they bother attacking them at the "god" tree thingy? also the blue cat people are "hard to kill" and whatnot yet seemed to go down with a couple of bullets much like a human
now the 3d, the 3d was really unimpressive I thought. there were a few places where it looked pretty good, but didn't really add anything, and so many more places where there were objects just out of focus that looked terrible... at least there weren't any ZOMG it is comming right at us moments that 3d films love to have.
but tbh it was probably the best 3d movie I have ever seen, that said it was also the worst 3d movie I have ever seen. I predict it will hold both titles forever as I really don't plan on giving the movie companies more money for a gimicky "3d experience" I can only hope 3d movies go the way of smellovision.
wait I take that back I really want to go see 2 girls 1 cup in 3d, but only if it also in smellovision. now that would be a cinema experience! |
