Like the title says, is it possible?
Which ship will get you a better yield, Hulk or Skiff?

Skiff is a dedicated Mercoxit ship, thus it will always get a better yield. From the top of my head it gets a 20% mining yield bonus to Mercoxit per Exhumer level. Don't quote me on that though.

The skiffs bonus adds up to 300% but fits only one strip, while the hulk can fit 3 without a bonus. So on paper it would seem to be a wash. I guess what I need to know is. Can the hulk fit the t2 deep core mining strips?

The Skiff gets a 300% bonus. You already have 100% and you are adding a 300% bonus, so it will mine 400% of a single strip miner at exhumer 5. The hulk mines 100% with 3 strip miners, so 300%.
It goes like this:
Skiff with 1 miner: 100% Exhumer level 1: 160% level 2: 220% level 3: 280% level 4: 340% level 5: 400%
So anything above exhumer level 4 and the skiff wins.

And the really good part about the skiff is that it's very agile and you can get out of the belt fast when you have to.
Oh, and don't forget that it has +2 warp strength so a single warp scrambler isn't going to stop you from getting away.

Oh, thanks for clarifying that. Your help is much appreciated.

don't forget that the hulk gets an exhumer skill bonus of 3% per level for strips. if this is effective for MDCSMs, doesn't exhumer level 4 net you 336% in a hulk vs 340% in a skiff?

At Exhumer 5 the Skiff is the best choice by far. At Exhumer 4, it depends of your other skills.
Take a read at the mining guide, there's an entire section to Mercoxit mining which is detailed enough to answer your question (and more). ★ LSJV now recruiting ★ |

No. Not possible in hulk. Strip Miner II can't fit mertoxcit crystals. Unless they have changed it somewhere since I last mined it. You can mine it in skiff with proper mining laser installed or in any turret ship with deep core miners.

Uh, AFAIK nothing is stopping you from putting DCMSM II's on a Hulk? :/ -------------------------- 2 Years later, mining continues to be the most overlooked game mechanic in Eve |

Edited by: sHERU on 02/02/2010 15:19:10 Very simple, you have to look at yield per crystal.
The skiff has an insane yield per crystal, so to mine the same (about the same) amount in a Hulk you would require 2 extra crystals.
2 t2 crystals cost about +/- 800.000 isk, so the Skiff saves you money.
The fact that the skiff is a very agile little critter is a nifty added bonus as well. SOONÖ |
