Nice Blog - fills in a few blanks, thanks.
Are there any plans to grow the existing arcs? I was a little disappointed in the small number of actual branching points in the Amarr lvl 4 arc for example, I was kind of hoping for more chapters, perhaps each being shorter or about the same. It felt cut back to a short story rather than Epic.
In principle, could more branch points and chapters be added to existing arcs?
Cheers Daan

So, now you don't have to go anywhere near an agent to get missions from them, so long as it's not a "bring me item xyz" type of mission? Snazzy.

I really like the concept of the new Gallente storyline, but they need a lot of work. The payout and reward are less than your average L4 vs. Pirates, and you have no bounties. You also have to travel 20+ jumps in some cases, 5 jumps deep into lowsec, so you have to bring along friends and split the already weak rewards. If it all goes wrong, you take a 18% or so faction hit plus whatever else you might lose for the income equal to a mediocre mission.

Big Dumb Object doesn't mean what many of you might think it means.
Quote: A "Big Dumb Object" (BDO) is any mysterious object (usually of extraterrestrial or unknown origin and immense power) in a story which generates an intense sense of wonder just by being there; to a certain extent, the term deliberately deflates this.
More importantly, these changes look nice and almost make me want to go back to that life.
Almost.
I would note, though, that a lot of Gallente mission runners don't seem to realize yet that mission rewards are dynamic, based on average time to completion, and will take a bit to balance out. (Though I can see where 22 jumps is a lot for folks.) --

I should try and make clear that I wasn't whining, wanting them to make me a gazillionaire off of a storyline mission, and I think a lot about missions, Level 4's particularly need changing. But if one guy is handing out free peanut-buster parfaits, and the other guy is handing out melted Dilly Bars, but first you've got to trek 300 miles through the Serengeti wearing bacon underwear, I'm taking the free parfait, every time.

With regard to remotely accepting and completing, maybe you should allow all agents to remotely offer missions if your personal standing with that agent is high enough, rather than require docking and connecting in station.
Agents should then offer missions appropriate to your location, passing you on to a closer agent if one is available to you, might do away with everyone stacked up in certain systems all the time.

I was offered one of the new Gallente storyline missions the other day. It wanted me to do something or other in my PvE-fit battleship some 'too many' jumps away. I turned it down, just like I turn down every low sec mission I'm assigned. Don't get me wrong, I'm not afraid of low sec or 0.0 in the least, I'm just under no illusions that flying a PvE-fit battleship into low sec is in any way shape or form wise.
Two observations:
1. Low Sec missions are already cherry picked or avoided by and large, despite the benefits of system security and the presence of generally better agents in those systems. It isn't a carrot issue, and a stick wouldn't work any better. Look to what you did with W-space exploration sites to figure out how to do this well.
2. Caldari trounced Gallente because of numbers from what I read. A lot of people roll/mission for Cadari because they're "the best" at PvE, and they generally have decent LP stores available to them. If the mission I was given was anomalous, then there is nothing to worry about... but if Gallente storyline missions are going to routinely send folks into low sec you've managed to make the PvE angle of Caldari all the better in comparison.
The storyline changes don't really affect me. I'm not in faction warfare and have no intention of joining. Further, I'm long past needing faction standing, and storyline mission rewards aren't particularly better than the average level 4 mission when faction considerations are removed. I figured I'd just toss my two cents in for your consideration, however.

Little tweaks like the "ship restrictions" are great.
1. Missions in LowSec MUST offer better rewards.
2. The Epic system is a nice addition. The problem is you still have a very small/stale non-Epic agent mission system. I understand that if you add 5 more Level 4 missions those eventually become stale but this is the very nature of PVE in MMO's. Maybe down the road you can create some more random elements to these missions. Please don't place all your PVE in the Epic basket. "rescued the Damsel over 473 times", that pretty much says it all.
3. Agent Infrastructure Upgrade - Mission agents in 0.0? Corp. installs the unit, gets access to agent/agents which they have positive standing. As they upgrade the unit the agent gives higher quality missions and maybe even unlocks a new Level 6 type mission that requires a large fleet and/or carrier support to complete. Done right this could lure empire mission runners down to 0.0 and a desire for sov holders to actually want mission runners.
4. I think at some point it would be interesting to watch a group of new players navigate finding agent, getting a mission, completing and finally returning to agent. Their understanding of the Standings system would also be interesting. I often wonder if the process above is confusing for new players and could be improved. I have not run any of the NPE content so maybe you have already addressed this possible issue.

I'd love to see an expansion of the 'ship specific' missions (preferably repeatable too). For instance 'advanced' level 1 missions that require either an interceptor or assault ship (like the pirate arcs for dominion), 'advanced' level 2 missions that require a snipe HAC or stealth recon, 'advanced' level 3 mission that would need a command ship or T3, and finally 'advanced' level 4s that are balanced around the assumption that the player has at least a full t2 fit BS, and most likely a faction BS or marauder.

You are missing akeyword here: succssfull
The dynamic system adjust missions payout based on the completion times of successfull missions, and going in low sec to a fixed location is in no way conductive to successful missions.
It will make a few pirates happy, but it will do nothing.
Note then that, even after dynamic adjustments it remain a high sec mission, with high sec rewards and limits to rewards, that will be done in low sec (and FW space).
To work this kind of mission require FW level rewards.

There is nothing more irritating then spending hours working towards a Storyline mission then finding out the storyline mission involves 30+ jumps and low sec. Well done you just wasted a players day of mission running towards a storyline mission.
How can CCP be so out of touch with what the players want? Please stop putting us PvE people into PvP risk situations. That is not what most PvE people want; if we did we would join Faction Warfare.
Whoever keeps coming up these stupid ideas to put PvE people in PvP risk situations or to try and force PvE people in low sec should be sacked. Stuff like this mission turns mission running into something fun to something very irritating and anything but fun.
As another player put it Hueijin San said " So effectively, Gallente will be spammed with crap storyline missions that noone wants to run, thus making the players of differing races (*cough caldari cough*) speed ahead in standings and resources... Good thinking CCP. How it this at all balanced" See this thread for all the negative comments http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1228466
EDIT: What you should do is give a choice, the agent should use the branching options from epic missions and say take this storyline mission in empire. Or take this new storyline mission in low sec for a higher reward. Don't force players into low sec. ______ How to Passive Shield Tank T2

Wow - the ship restrictions information is great news! I don't run missions regularly, so I haven't memorized the different setups, and I don't care to look up each mission in a guide before running it. Having access to that little bit of information will save me a lot of time.
I must agree with some of the other players here about the oddness of throwing PvE players into PvP space. Fixed locations seems even stranger. I can understand if CCP wants to get more players involved in PvP instead of mission grinding, but you're going to have to make PvE-fit ships a lot more PvP-capable to make that viable. As it stands, running a mission in lowsec in a PvE ship is rather suicidal.

You write their background story is related to FW, but the missions themselves has no impact on FW, right? No special rewards, nothing special at all? In fact, it seems like most other storyline missions provide much better rewards to the mission runner for much less effort. The only thing that makes these new missions different is having the same low sec system as mission objective, which translates into you have designed a shooting gallery for low sec pirates as long as they know in which specific system to set up shop. And it is even the fishes themselves that has to do all the effort to get stuck in the barrel.
I hope I am missing something here, or has all of CCP suddenly decided that there is only one way to play EVE right (player vs. player pew pew...) and everybody else should either be ridiculed and/or pushed down the only true path? ---------------- Mr. Science & Trade Institute

I fail to understand how mission running was destroyed in general, considering most of it has remained the same. The only item you seem to take issue with is the fact that the Epic Arcs don't cater to your wants.
It's been made abundantly clear elsewhere that the Epic Arcs were intended for those not afraid of low-sec. Higher rewards must entail greater risk, and since the Guristas and Serpentis rats spawning out of Motsu have the brains of walnuts, adding low-sec into the mix is how it's done.
I realize there must be some bitterness that the new content is more or less restricted to those who have guts of a certain amount, but you can't feel too jealous just because you're unwilling to take up the challenge.
Understand that Epic Arcs or any other low-sec mission, is not just another daily quest for you to grind. This game revolves around player interaction and risk management, and not a linear climb to some arbitrary level in a "single-player MMO enviroment".
For those wanting this kind of experience, it's certainly achievable in EVE. But do understand that it is not, and never was intended to cater to this style of play. CCP is not trying to cater to the few no-risk, AFK mission runner, they're delivering content for the rest of us.

Regat Kozovv said " I fail to understand how mission running was destroyed in general, considering most of it has remained the same." I am not talking about Epic archs which were done badly. I am talking about normal level 4 Gallante empire storyline missions that are in low sec now.
Missing running for faction standings and to get faction standing item rewards for Gallante has been hurt badly. Unlike everyone else the Gallente pilots to get faction standings and faction standing rewards have to fly 30+ jumps and go into low sec camps. Not only do we have to make stupidly long jumps but our new rewards are tiny compared to the standard 4 jump other race storyline missions. To make matters worse the new storyline missions are always in the same place and camped by PvP people looking for easy targets.
Regat Kozovv said " I realize there must be some bitterness that the new content is more or less restricted to those who have guts of a certain amount, but you can't feel too jealous just because you're unwilling to take up the challenge." It's not about guts or challenge it's about reward. 30jumps is not fun; I have better things to do then make 30 pointless jumps. Risking very large amount of isk for next to know isk is not fun, not when I need to be in a PvE ship to do the mission that takes place in a PvP hot zone.
Regat Kozovv said " CCP is not trying to cater to the few no-risk, AFK mission runner, they're delivering content for the rest of us." How is 30+jumps delivering content? That's delivering boredom. Has is forcing a group PvE people into PvP delivering content? That's driving away content for the PvE people. Who said anything about single player Eve. I and many other people like group PvE content. We do not like being pushed into unfair, unbalanced one sided PvP fights. Pushing some PvE pilots into PvP situations is not fun.
Challengeing PvE content that involves groups does not an should not involve PvP.

It really isn't a matter of being fearful, but of being cognizant of the horrible pvp/pve fitting mismatch. CCP seems to have a directive to increase traffic through low sec, thus providing more targets to pirates. That directive is quite well and good, but until they change the pvp/pve fitting mismatch (amongst other issues) pve-fit mission runners running combat missions in low sec space are basically fat, easily located game birds waiting to be shot.
The content designers behind these storyline missions either don't understand that (and thought sending players to a static low sec station was good from an ignorant 'flavor text' angle), or the directive to increase low sec traffic trumped not wanting to further imbalance the Caldari/Gallente mission-running edge. Misplaced priorities, in my opinion.
CCP is expanding too fast. It's too easy to cite increasingly common instances of them developing content or even mechanics for things the folks involved don't understand particularly well, which is unfortunate. It had always been what I regarded as one of their clear strengths when compared to other MMO developers.

I am also a bit baffled with these new storylines. If they were prompted by the faction war shenanigans, shouldn't they show up as new faction war storylines? Alternatively, they could be made into an epic-arc-style mission series. I don't think anyone would object to that, especially if the missions were re-tuned to account for PVP risks.
It's strange that CCP didn't see anything wrong with them. I also find it strange that they're Gallente-specific. If we're going to do the RP thing here, the Caldari definitely have motivation to stabilize their "new" systems, and the Amarr/Minmatar should also be justifiably concerned about the consequences of what's happened on the Gallente/Caldari front as its effects ripple into their domains.
However, there are some exciting pluses: 1) static lowsec system destinations: yarr happy pirates! 2) 20+ jumps to system: yay for suicide gankers as you invariably fall asleep while travelling! 3) extremely low rewards: It's not about the reward; it's about the adventure! 4) L1/L2 copy-pasted storylines: sink or swim NPE is the best NPE! 5) PVE missions in PVP space: increased demand for unprobeable T3s! 6) Gallente only: increased value of Gallente LP!
As my forays into lowsec do not involve sitting in the same place with drones out waiting to get probed, I will not be partaking in these new storylines. Luckily, I mission for all 4 empires. So, I won't be seriously affected by them. I do feel sorry for my Gallente compatriots though.

Just doing the Caldari epic arc now and it is a nice change from lvl 4s.
I usually run lvl 4s in low sec and I think would be nice if they got a little love. I think increased chance of overseer in WC, some % chance for high bounty group of BS to spawn in some other mission, that kind of thing. More lp and isk reward/time bonus is just boring.

Both of those options are already implemented, the chance of low level faction spawns in missions with variable NPC groups is higher in low sec. Probably the problem is that moving from a 1% chance to 2% chance (hypothetical numbers, no idea what are the true numbers), while doubling the probability of a special spawn make it still rare.

Sorry guys, but this is just cosmetics, nothing really new or innovative. Mission Arcs (sequence of successive missions with a decent reward at the end) are found in most MMOs and usually they offer hundreds of them not just 10, with a higher level of detail and immersion.
Take Lotro for example, their expansions bring so much more content and next to that they come up with something innovative each year (e.g. legendary weapon system last year, skirmish system this year, things that are new to MMOs, not only the game itself), while in Eve we mostly get some old things changed (sovereignty system) and things nerfed ("balanced") and stuff with a little to no innovation. Eve is a sandbox, but that's no excuse to not come up with innovative things that have something to do with the core game experience (with that i don't mean things like certificates or ingame browsers) or at least something that makes core activities (which is pvp in Eve ?) more interesting, such as an official killboard/stats/rankings etc.

Theres some very nice new features explained here, and I like the direction that this is taking.
One thing I would really like to see, is semi-random encounters in missions... specifically stuff like being ambushed at gates, or maybe getting the opportunity to help a victim of your enemy on the way, who then shows up unexpectedly to assist in the final wave of the fight.
For me, that kind of thing done well would really add to the experience.

As they upgrade the unit the agent gives higher quality missions and maybe even unlocks a new Level 6 type mission that requires a large fleet and/or carrier support to complete. Done right this could lure empire mission runners down to 0.0 and a desire for sov holders to actually want mission runners.
No, you just cause many of the 0.0 mission alts to move out of the mission hubs to their 0.0 space to run missions. Not a bad idea.

Mining Base Camp, over and over and over! Kaalakiota! Hyasyoda! Kaalakiota! thrice in the last week out of 4 storylines!
I wouldn't mind the occasional one, but this is getting seriously irritating. Every time i got these offers, i was 15+ jumps from the objective, at least 5 jumps into low-sec. I suck at losec! And i bet there's a few gankers that by now know the systems where these take place. Always the same for each of them.

Stop running Gallente missions and move to Minmatar space. CCP should 'get it' eventually.

I like some of the changes except for the new storyline missions. They should have been made for all factions and not just Gallente. From talking with some of my corpmates and a few other players; it seems that there are quite a few players that are turning down these new storylines; due to the risk vs reward is just not there and for some it is hard to get enough people together to try them. Also to me it seems that what these new storyline missions do; is hurt is the casual mission runner that can only play a little each night due to real life and use the missions so that they can build faction standings.

I like the features in general, except for the Gallente storyline missions. How many of them needs to be declined before you reverse this insane crap?
Personally I get offered nothing but those and I decline every single one. I don't find it "thrilling" having to go to low sec to do a storyline mission for the faction I want to work for.
Remove those missions asap or at least make them optional. The current gameplay is getting utterly destroyed for the majority Gallente mission runners.
How many players have to tell CCP this, before CCP acts?
The content team could have worked on so many awesome things, like e.g. new normal missions, storydriven missions in high sec etc. Instead this crap hitting PVP-averse players right where it hurts.
If CCP decides to go the opposite way and implement these low sec storyliners for all empire factions, then talk about creating "the epic SWG disaster" all over again. The game will be hurt a lot.
DON'T **** WITH THINGS THAT WORK ALREADY!!

I would respectfully suggest to the developers of these storyline missions that the idea of consequences for Factional Warfare "successes" by opposition forces has been misapplied. That someone grinding L1 missions with an Advisory agent should receive 3 of these missions in a row is, I suggest, inappropriate.
I'm not low-sec adverse, but 14+ jump missions, two systems deep into low-sec, in a PvE-fit ship? Look, "low-sec" happens... no issue. Missions of this nature, in L1s? No.
So sorry, no.
I would suggest that these missions seem more appropriate for those actively involved in FW.
The occasional courier missions to low sec for a new player with no PvP experience? Fine. Part of the game.
These missions.... no.
Please reconsider -- with some haste, please --a reallocation of these missions. |

god the carebear tears losec is part of the game folks... DEAL WITH IT lol
ok now that thats out of my system.
- losec missions should have better rewards but then losec in general should have better rewards.
- people who spend their entire time in eve hisec missioning(HOW DO YOU STAND JUST GRINDING YOUR TIME AWAY) need to realize that theres more to the game than just undocking shooting rats and that their ship is NOT their avatar.
- mission runners need to realize that losing a t2 fit fully insured t1 bs is cheap even if its rigged and especially if you spend all your time running missions.
- in defense of some of the mission runners who dont want to spend the time figuring out the other ways in eve to make isk the fact that these new storyline missions for gallente go to a SET location and are able to be given by any agent of that faction is just moronic... especially since that set location is in losec and therefore probably camped. I personally believe they should of put an agent location limit for these new storylines so that you dont have people crossing all of eve just to do the mission.(and probably just declining it instead)
just a few points i wanted to make.
p.s. I think one facet of all the complaints is these hisec mission runners are too afraid to lose their ships which are truthfully quite easy to replace if you dont go and spend an exorbitant amount of isk on a faction bs with plex fittings. for most missions a t2 fit bs will do the job just as well for a fraction of the cost. maybe something like putting new players into a npc situation where they will definately be destroyed but limit it to only a specific ship type or something like that might break their attachment to their ships at the get go. oh and i have nothing against bling ships and yes they do go pop from time to time deal with it hehe.

Hiya Talinthi. Per my previous post "low sec happens"... Low sec is part of the game & yes I agree w/ you... it is up to me to deal with it.
When in w-space having some fun and, hopefully, earning some ISK, I've had more than one of those "..days after..." spent waking up in the med clone vat. What, again?
Low-sec (and w-space) happen.
Having said that: I think that we are on the same page about the way in which these new storylines are structured... imo the application is flawed. Working away either in low-sec or w-space is dynamic... arriving at a pre-determined, well-camped mission site in low-sec is a static s***storm.
I'm fine with the concept, since we're seeing consequences for the Gallente from FW. It is the application of these consequences that needs a tune-up.
Be well... perhaps I'll see ya when I'm out with my cheapie Retriever during Hulkageddon. |

"and rescued the Damsel over 473 times"
love the first updated, which split the window and now the advanced updates, too, making it absolute useful and gives fast overview.
There is allways another "I wanna have", but now it has 100% of the best infos you need in missions (besides fittings, but that's another book, which wouldn't suit in here)

When I am lazy after a hard day at the office, I run lvl 4 Courier missions in Sinq on a second screen while I surf the intarweb and read the eve board etc. I know this is chump change and I dont expect more, but at least my char isnt sitting idly in a station.
So I get this "Troop buildup" Encounter storyline. 70-100m implant as reward (depending whether you look at buy or sell orders).
15 jumps from Sinq to Placid, last 6 or so in deep low sec. Oh and it tells me I should bring backup.
Yeah right :) Good to have this "Remote Decline Button" built in. I will use it each and every time I get this Storyline.
Thanks and sorry for not liking it.

The new Gallente Storyline missions suck big time. There is a discussion in mission and complexes but I will re-iterate my views here:
Edited by: Eternal Bellend on 10/01/2010 17:57:39
Originally by: CCP JasonitasThis mission is a part of a new batch of missions that we're testing out. Essentially, this is content that is directly related to the ongoing storyline of EVE, namely, the capture of Gallente systems by the Caldari FW militia and the ensuing blind auction to Caldari megacorps. Thus, this is content that was created as a response to how you, the players, influenced the story in-game and in-setting.
Thus, it is as designed. We have a dev blog coming out that explains a bit more about it, so stay tuned for it. These missions are only for Gallente and are highly experimental in nature. We're keeping an eye on it to see how well it is received by you guys.
Well I have just received this mission (Mining base camp) and could NOT BELIEVE THE CRASS STUPID INEPTITUDE OF THE MORONS WHO THOUGHT THAT THIS IN ANYWAY WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA. As a way to encourage PVE players to try PVP and take some risk it rates as about -1000000 on a 1 to 10 scale.
Eternal is my alt who I am GRINDING faction for by doing boring level 1 and 2 pve missions. The whole idea with this alt is to get enough faction to join FW. It has been a nightmare; I either get storyline couriers that move me 0.01 or now this heap of steaming poo poo. I am at 0.49 so only needed a little push to get to the magical 0.5 and over so me and my 1 person corp can join. The idea is that others in my pve corp can join and we can have some PVP FW fun. That was to be MY EXPERIMENT in the game that I PAY FOR then I smash into this ****whit of a game mechanic.
It is bad enough grinding faction as it is (on my PVE main and alt I now just grind corp faction it is so much easier)without these barriers being presented.
How did anybody in CCP ever think that this would be a good idea? How? Did you even think about the reaction and consequences of this? How are noob players suppose to deal with this especially if it is their first storyline? Did you all collectively **** your brains out over Xmas?
I was going to grind faction to join FW PVP but now with this garbage I am going back to my main and alts to grind level 4s and will ignore storylines for ever more. So back to 100% carebearing for me since you have just made it too difficult for me to jump on the PVP FW wagon.
I have made a petition, I hope your petition logs get snowed over with people complaining about this.
CCP why do you make this game about creating barriers and road blocks to play in new and different ways rather than creating routes?

I have posted a proposal in the Assembly Hall to have these experimental missions removed:
http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1248644
Please support.
I am hoping that we may get some comment from a CSM representative. For me these missions are so badly designed and show a complete lack of understanding of the PVE playerbase that the Atlanta Storyline Team should get a good telling off for even coming up with this idea never mind the CCP morons who then got it implemented.
In the mission and complexes forum CCP have been asking for PVE feedback. A few months back there were pages and pages of excellent ideas given on missions, their design, faction and how agents should work. The Storyline team in particular and CCP developers in general clearly ignored these threads, took nothing from the PVE community on board otherwise they would not have ever dreamed up these asinine experimental forced FW PVP missions.

6 jumps through low-sec for a 100mil implant isn't worth it to you???
Wow. Man, who would risk their T1 frigate for such a paltry sum. I know I wouldn't. I'd better get a free faction ship just for setting foot in a 0.4.
I'm all for fixing content so that risk averse players don't have to set foot outside the comfy zone that is high-sec, but this belief that everyone deserves this epic level payout for no risk is just ludicrous. |

I got a mission like this while running level 1 missions. It was 12 jumps, and the rewards seemed OK. The skill implant seemed nice enough, and I certainly have no reservations about taking my cheap little T1 frigate out into low-sec (seriously, it could be replaced in minutes), BUT... I've already plugged in 3 +4 implants in the course of my playing. LIKE HELL if I'm gonna fly 60 million in implants through a low-sec corridor to a known and camped destination. I can "throw away" a million or two on a frigate at this stage no problem, but without a jump clone and no way to preserve the +4s, I'm not going to risk 60 million for 70 million. So I let the mission rot. :( |
