What it is, is that they haven't got enough blade servers to share the load on the database cluster for when it goes over a certain number, which is creating the bottlenecks and forcing the server to crash.
I am sorry mate, but.... Using MSSQL for any database over a couple of hundred MBs is asking for trouble. MSSQL is only an old version of Sybase with some GUI eyecandy tacked onto it, don't pretend it's much more than that. For serious SQL stuff, stick to either the original thing (Sybase) or Oracle or something. Not something that is liked more for it's GUI than it's stability...

I believe they use MS SQL 2007 cluster as MySQL cluster is not that hot for this sort of thing. However, Oracle would be a good choice imho.
Oracle?

The only thing that makes it slightly less funny is that every single time there's a database problem.... the "I've got a friend that knows someone that knows a dba that says... "come out of the woodworks too tell us how much MSSQL sucks.... ( hint... it doesn't )

Oh, a your mama SQL war!!!
So currently I architect commercial enterprise applications for a well known communications company for a living. MSSQL is DEFINITELY a reasonable choice for something like Eve. The nice part about it is you can use it out of the box, deployment is a well understood problem and you have great support. There a lots of examples of huge deployments being very successful. So known and a safe choice.
MySQL can also be used in massive systems. Google is basically built on a variant of MySQL and that is considered to be one of the largest database applications on the planet. Problem is though, not really a "commercial" product so you have to assume a lot of the burden to support it in your application that you might be able to get from a third party.
There are other high performance and scalable database back ends as well. But there really isn't any reason to consider them over the two I just discussed.
So I am happy with CCP using MSSQL because it lets the concentrate on other aspects of their product and largely count on Microsoft to be making MSSQL as good as it can be.
So as it is with every decision when crafting a software solution, you have to look at all aspects of the impact of a decision, not just raw performance.

I dont doubt about your MSSQL knowledge, also seen in the links you provided in your prev post. It does look like you don't know anything about MySQL after this reply.
MySQL is perfect for huge environments like also EVE, especially if you go look into the clustering possibilities.
