It's using MSSQL, which is one of the most used SQL database engines in many large sites.
What it is, is that they haven't got enough blade servers to share the load on the database cluster for when it goes over a certain number, which is creating the bottlenecks and forcing the server to crash.

I am sorry mate, but.... Using MSSQL for any database over a couple of hundred MBs is asking for trouble. MSSQL is only an old version of Sybase with some GUI eyecandy tacked onto it, don't pretend it's much more than that. For serious SQL stuff, stick to either the original thing (Sybase) or Oracle or something. Not something that is liked more for it's GUI than it's stability...

Oh, a your mama SQL war!!!
So currently I architect commercial enterprise applications for a well known communications company for a living. MSSQL is DEFINITELY a reasonable choice for something like Eve. The nice part about it is you can use it out of the box, deployment is a well understood problem and you have great support. There a lots of examples of huge deployments being very successful. So known and a safe choice.
MySQL can also be used in massive systems. Google is basically built on a variant of MySQL and that is considered to be one of the largest database applications on the planet. Problem is though, not really a "commercial" product so you have to assume a lot of the burden to support it in your application that you might be able to get from a third party.
There are other high performance and scalable database back ends as well. But there really isn't any reason to consider them over the two I just discussed.
So I am happy with CCP using MSSQL because it lets the concentrate on other aspects of their product and largely count on Microsoft to be making MSSQL as good as it can be.
So as it is with every decision when crafting a software solution, you have to look at all aspects of the impact of a decision, not just raw performance.

Guys..... It wasn't the database. Clearly someone at CCP just tripped over a power cord!

Uh, w-space systems have stargates and stations?
I can't comment on any individual stargates or stations, but I'm sure they're all closed. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

It's using MSSQL, which is one of the most used SQL database engines in many large sites.
You really dont know anything about this do you? MSSQL is ****, MySQL is a lot better than MSSQL..

Thats two laughs in one night. Sorry, but if you really think MySQL Can run as big-time as the eve servers, you better do some reading. MySQL is good for small implimentations, not HUGE ones.
I dont doubt about your MSSQL knowledge, also seen in the links you provided in your prev post. It does look like you don't know anything about MySQL after this reply.
MySQL is perfect for huge environments like also EVE, especially if you go look into the clustering possibilities.

I think someone not only tripped over the power cord, they took the nearby transformer down with it . ____________________________________________ When going to a party with wine, women, and song. Always ascertain the vintage of the first two. |

too bad failover didn't kick in (if there is any). would be interesting to read what exactly happened though. 50k users is not a mass you want to play with up/down.

It appears there is an issue with whatever version of SQL Server CCP is using with the cluster and failovers... uh... fail
SQL Server has come a long way and it's a pretty good product, but it is still years behind Oracle in terms of reliability and high availability. Imho.
Microsoft is likely using CCP as a testbed for SQL Server and likely have a team of developers dedicated to it. The thing is Oracle solved these kind issues long time ago and has been proven to deliver in this kind of high demand/high availability environment.

EvE uses the microsoft sql, despite the weekly crash, for 1 reason. Microsoft is helping CCP develop the network / interaction between EvE online and dust 514.
why? Xbox live.

And this is why CCP prefers not to talk about it. The more information they give their customers, the more misinformation is spread.

Yeah, it's super awesome.

I love this part:
"The complete solution with complete transactional relay log synchronization will probably be implemented in 6.1 to cover the few remaining situations where the relay log can be incorrect."
Don't worry though. It will probably be implemented in 6.1!

Happened to me too. Try installing new drivers to your graphic card and get the latest directX.

Yep, MySQL all the way! On a different note though, wonder if you need to Defrag on a RAMSAN? Haven't bought one yet but with that much RAM...? Maybe run Memtest through it... only take them a week for the first pass!
