The other day I was talking to some guy about who were the biggest corps in EvE and I mentioned The Merchant Marines as having around 450 members the last time i checked. Well, he looks up their info and they have around 215 people left and no more corp discription.
So my question is, what happened and why? Are they just booting loads of alts and inactives, or is the corp disbanding? Sorry to be nosey, but I am just curious. ---------------

From the point of view of someone who fought them frequently... it looks like the combination the constant death of their memebers ships and pods in 0.0, the "backstabbing" by nemesis in cloud ring, the deteriorating relations between them and their former alliance(norad), and war declarations by merc corps like bdci disrupting their empire operations was enough to kill their morale and result in an exodus of the capable members into more capable corps, leaving them in a state of reorganizing in empire space. Hows that for a run-on sentence? ----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Waagaa Ktlehr on 21/11/2004 23:37:12 EDIT: Got a name wrong, sorry :)
I think most of their demise can be attributed to internal reasons. Taladorn left eve, and when a charismatic leader leaves, they almost always leave a void.
Sometimes someone else steps up and unites everyone and nothing basically happens, most of the time though, people split up and go their own ways.
Looks like the latter happened.
Although outside pressure must have been big as well, I'm pretty sure it's 90% due to Femtaki leaving :) ------------------------------------------ I am a love machine, feeding my fantasy, give me a kiss or three, have fun!

To all those who would bash The Merchant Marines (TheMM) please STFU. I had the honor of flying with them for a bit and they were the best orginized corp i have ever been in. TheMM suffered an internal blow when the CEO (Taladorn not Femintaki) retired but that's in internal issue i will not discuss here as it's not my place. I'm sure a director or upper corp person will come along to set the record straight. TheMM is NOT dead just reorginizing.

Edited by: Cabadrin on 22/11/2004 01:02:24 THEMM is currently under a reorganization into multiple corporations with a new CEO. The actual THEMM corp will continue to exist until the last player leaves its ranks. However, this does not mean that the corporation is dead, nor does it guarantee that we will not reform in the future.
In a great and noble experiment, THEMM set out to be one of the most powerful corporations in the game. At one time, we numbered over 470 members in a single corporation. Our beloved CEO, Taladorn, used her double charisma implants to beguile the EVE populace into compliance. Unfortunately, with success comes enemies. From the very beginning, there were people who wished to curb our enthusiasm. Various members of GODS joined an alt-corp to harass our new players, eventually becoming frustrated and committing too much energy into our demise ... once that was over, we participated in the Northern War, with all the hassles that entails. After a period of 5 wars at once, we were faced with the backstabbing of Nemesis, a decision to leave NORAD, and then more declarations of war. With the resignation of Taladorn, the diaspora of THEMM members across Empire, and a decreasing sense of community, THEMM decided to offer their members the choice to pursue new goals or join new corporations set up to work with THEMM personell.
Please contact Lizardo for more information on the new corporations.
As for many of the older officers and the older members, we've gone our seperate ways for now, moving into different corps with different ideas. Will we return to THEMM? That remains to be seen. Anything is possible, in time.
So don't cry about what happened to the corporation. I would rather we are remembered for what we accomplished: becoming the largest corporation in EVE history, numbering over 470 members at one time. Being part of an alliance, and the work that entails. Our large indutries, supplying the EVE populace. And most importantly, the friendships we all made as part of this corporation.
Good luck to all past, present, and future THEMM.

the true death came from hiring in bulk and not off of the quality of the players and ignoring pvp for too long and having way to many stubborn nOObs. THe guys who were there 4 or more months or were there from the begining during the PIGS war were the true core of THEMM. When they left it ripped the heart out of THEMM. I also think by confining ourselves to empire was kinda signing our death warrant. After we left EVERY alliance in Eve asked us to join and every time I told Taladorn we needed to go back to 0.0 I politely got flipped the bird. Ignoring the needs of ur core players leads to corp death. I would rather of had 170 hardcore loyal players then 470 players just along for the thinking its cool to join a corp that size. Many of the people in our old Academy were ballsy and I think if we had kept our core players we would have made a powerhouse eventually but I can "What If" all day. They were fun guys to fly with even if they were horrid at pvp. I wish them the best. Just shocked at how ill thought out Dals leaving was.
Please stop being a third rate flamer,I am tired of reactivating my account just to kick your ass. |

Cab I know that I was there, but she just killed all Chars and alts and left only Taladorn around and never made ANY preparations for a transition of power she left and let everything we worked for crumble,I find that shocking. Never said RL stuff ain't important,it is and I commend her choice tho I don't commend her methods of going about it. IS that wrong?
