I ask cause 1) with CCP it's probably hidden in some conveluted place and 2) when I was clicking, it kept saying that option was for 'reporting offensive names'

I'm not convinced that this would be nearly as much of a big deal as some people are making it out to be. If the policy permitted a single name change for a fee (similar to portrait swap) AND there was a tool on the forum to look up past name changes, then I really don't see the problem. It would generate a little more income for CCP, players would have the option of getting rid of awful names, and alliance security reps would still be able to do a background check on a character with only one additional step.
Honestly, it's something that CCP should have considered a long time ago.

Why put the utility on the forums? Why not put an "Alias" tab where it shows previous aliases just as there is employment history?
If any dev is reading this, please consider the "alias" tab option that way space detectives can figure out who's who. |

Personally I would love the option to change my name. I had no idea when I started that there were so many Tobias's already.
But I do see where CCP is coming from on this. A system allowing name changes could easily be exploitable.
I have a little suggestion though. How about in addition to making name changes cost the same as a portrait change, but also make it so that you can only ever change a characters name ONCE on the same account. That way if you screwed up you could fix it, but you wouldn't really be able to abuse it. It would also be helpful to those buying characters so they could choose their own name once it switches accounts.
In any case I know this is just wishful thinking. ~ CURRENT INTERNETS = + 305238 |

When I make my first account and my main character.. I look at the box for character name and nothing come to mind. I look up.. thinking.. I gave my main the name of ceiling fan manufacturer. This I would change.

Why not do the obvious for allowing characters to do whatever with their names.
Give them a social security number at birth to keep identity pinned? :P

Why not just have name changes appear under the employment history. That way someone can tell at glance if someone ever changes their name!

I agree with this. I don't see why you cant change your name (even for a fee) and have the old one be in a names history tab.
I'd honestly pay to change the name of my character, and my name isnt at either end of the alphabet.

This, name is an incredibly important aspect in any MMO's as it's you 'face' for others to recognise you as a person from the midless masses that mull about. Take away your name and your word means nothing and in game like EVE a character history (name again) is incredibly important even more so then in most MMO's I've played.

Edited by: Mashie Saldana on 25/04/2010 13:22:31 We will get this lovely scenario if any of your ideas were implemented:
Player A: Named Joe Player B: Named xxxCOOLxxx Player C: Named abc123
Player A changes name to Tobias. Player B see that name Joe is free and changes to it. Player C see that xxxCOOLxxx is free and changes to it. Player B pull off a scam and changes name to abc123. Player C see that name Joe is free and changes to it.
Some random CEO get a corp application from player A and desperately try to figure out WHICH Joe is a scammer as you now all of a sudden need to know both name and exact date of every scam in game.
This is why name changes never will be permitted in this game.

I can't believe that people seriously think it's a good idea to be able to change your name.
In eve your whole reputation be it good, bad, evil or whatever, is on your name, if you're a known can-flipper then miners in local know you're there so they can be prepared to deal with your actions, if you're a good guy and are known for being a reliable hauler for non-corp miners then likewise your reputation goes with your name.
I love my name, it's a laugh like the game should be played, not seriously.
If you've picked a name you don't like then basically tough luck, either emoragequit (after giving your stuff to me) or live with your choice.

We have now Corp history on player info. Could include name history. This way no one hide past. Limit name change like limit neural remap. Allow name change on account sale to new owner. Do not for any reason allow name change to be secret.

So you've got to right click everyone in local all the time if you're a miner to see if a known canflipper is in the system? It won't work, and shouldn't be (and isn't) allowed unless your name is offensive and petitioned on that basis.
It's a game ffs who the hell cares if you're character name is fluffywuffybunnykins and you've decided to turn hardar$ed pirate, if people are that hung up on a character name then they obviously take the game far too seriously.

As you are doing now?
Perhaps so. But it is just a game.. For better or for worse, depending on the person which you ask, CCP is in constant migration away from that cold unyielding world that Eve used to be.
They will do this in some manner.. is just a matter of time.

"Who the hell cares it's a game ffs" is one of the worst arguments I know. I care about my name, because it is a large part of a first impression. It is also hard to pronounce, albeit that's a whole different thing and what I'd like to change mine is no less easier to say, it'd be a proper Minmatar name :P
But anyway yeah about your argument, that could be said on "fixing" the 1000 player fleet battles, and plenty of other things - "who cares, you're just taking the game too seriously." Hypocricy is rampant in the world, this is one of those things. Just because someone has a different opinion on how something should be done doesn't mean they are any less "too serious" about some issue than you are about something else. If that made any sense. ------------------- This is Sig. Launch every Sig. For Great Justice. |

Yeah, because people don't make alts to do this already to avoid tarnishing their main's reputation.
Oh wait.
It's a non-issue. Allow name changes once every X months and keep a publicly viewable history. Problem solved.
