Hmmmmm, interresting read indeed. Nothing much to debate about that. I dont understand tough why they couldnt place the ring in one piece around the planet?

The new planets and stars look fantastic, thank you CCP!
Some questions: 1. Will the planets receive an updated pole textures? As in polar ice caps.
2. The current rings do not cast any shadow on the gas giants they orbit. Is that fixable?
3. When do we get true 32bit location-dependent and realistic looking nebula backdrops? ...

Very neat and they look very very nice.
Now hopefully a future iteration will include the different ecological zones like deserts and polar ice caps. It's a pet peeve of mine to see the whole "Planet with one environement everywhere." trope.
And I did notice the cities when I first logged in after Dominion. That's a very nice touch as well. Shows how big the EVE universe really is.
Keep the big techie blogs up CCP. They're awesome. -------------------------------------------------- Civil Disobedience is still Disobedience The most damage is done by those that know how and not why |

So when will we get "fixed" planetary data? That is, surface temp, gravity, all that sort of thing. Right now the numbers are completely nonsensical. I had thought that this would get resolved in Dominion with this pass, but no... please throw us "immersioneers" a bone here! --

'tis as I feared. :(
We have a small selection of height maps for temperate planets which are then varied by sea level/ocean coverage and a couple more variables. In essence, this means half a dozen topographies at most (maybe some more if the polar textures are independent in choice and alignment from the equatorial ones) for, what, 10'000 temperate planets?
I had expected procedural generation of height maps, allowing for great variety, limitless zooming in, taking into account of a plethora of variables, and thus, the possibility of some real surprises in store for explorers that not even the developers may have seen.
Add to this the fact that star type and size, orbit radius, surface temperature and planet mass still seem to have no bearing on the look of the planet (I've seen 60k km-diameter, 10 kelvin surface temperature temperate planets, ffs!) and I don't really wonder why planet info tabs don't even mention any data on hugely unimportant stuff such as population, economics, culture or government.
Oh, well, maybe in 2016...

Was it intentional that some (a lot) of planets changed their type? E.g. some gas giants with rings became ice planets, some barren planets became gas giants with rings, etc. ...

I had noticed the technique you're using for city lights/etc as well as the new starfield when digging through the .stuff files (ahh, guilty pleasures) - very clever, I have to say. And the new planets do look very nice.
I did notice some odd aliasing artifacts on my old 7800GTX, however; looked like insufficient FP precision when doing the UV lookups - this applies to both planets and the starfield, but is much more noticeable on planets. Bit odd, as it should support all the needed features. It renders fine on my 8 and 9-series cards.
-Cor There'd be a graphical sig here if I wasn't so lazy. |

I was wondering about the cratered surfaces. How are these generated? Based on existing moon and mercurius pictures perhaps?

This is nice and all, but when are you going to fix the broken nullsec warfare mechanics, lack of server stability and the excessive lag that makes even the new planets look like crap?

They look pretty good, but you forgot the POLAR ICE CAPS on all the ones with atmospheres!! I mean, come on, realism!
Also, until we can actually approach to satellite orbit distances, almost dipping into atmospheres, the planets are not gonna be all that they can be.
Examples:
X3 Terran Conflict Screenshot. Star Trek Wallpaper. Earth upper atmosphere by NASA. The shuttle in orbit.
Get us closer, so the planets appear bigger.

Or in the far future all planets suffer from global warming and there are no ice caps...

However, could I request the next one (which I hope will be soon) be about an upcoming feature please?

I love the dichotomy in this thread of: Why are you making pretty planets when there's more important stuff to fix vs. Why isn't the socio-economic data for 10,000 planets done yet.

When many (most?) of your players have to turn off every graphic effect and turn the details down to medium or low just to have a chance to get one cycle of firing from guns that will then jam (if you even managed to load into the game in the first place), you can guess how important pretty planets are overall.

I have to say that a few months ago I could run two accounts simultaneously (on ultra low graphics settings, no dither, small window size), now it's barely playable even if I'm doing lightweight stuff like jetcan mining on one and probing stuff in low pop systems on the other. Planets are something I only usually see when I'm dropping safespot bookmarks so I'd rather have the option of better performance even though I imagine many like the eye candy.

I would like to ask the same question. Oh and there is ofc proposal to get it in Assembly Hall Physically 'correct' planets and relevant discussion in features and proposals A little issue with the planets.
