Most assuredly it was pre-Exodus, during the Castor period. We had Interceptors, no other T2 ships, no bloody towers, no capitals...of course there were some drawbacks. Instant "pilots in space" on the map made strategy more or less non-existent....too easy to hold space, too hard to take it.
Best bit was..how empty space was. I fly about in 0.0 now, and I think I'm in Empire. 5-6 folks on gates everywhere...station huggers....even missioners out here. I go to empire and my paranoia at seeing so many targets drives me to get out ASAP. |

Definitely RmR.
At the near end of the Cold War CCP performed a System wide hardware upgrade. After this upgrade which went swimmingly and was praised for how smoothly it went, Eve was for the first and only time I can remember lag free. It was brilliant. Then very shortly RmR hit and with it brought lag and crapness and divided attention from CCP due to Serenity. It took months for Eve to run anywhere near right.

I came in just before Nano got nerfed.
And I have to say I like Eve alot better since nano got nerfed. 1 month into a game, I'm in a rifter messing around trying this can baiting thing. A phoon takes my can I'm out at around 20km, his drones come after me, so I try to kite them. Next thing I know the stupid phoon gains on me quickly and tackles me in my rifter. That's when I thought to myself... There is something horribly wrong with this game when a Battleship can overtake and tackle a frigate. Ever since nano got nerfed and nerfed hard I've been happier than a bug in a rug. I'm just waiting on an Assault Destroyer. |

Edited by: Freyya on 22/01/2010 10:52:59 Adding vote to Cold War/RMR or very late Exodus anyways. Early 2006 when i just started seriously was when you could fly around and actually feel space was huge, empty, desolate and had things to discover. Nowadays everyone and his dog is everywhere. 20K Player peak ftw.
If by golden age you interpet the age to actually be able to make a decent living with earning iskies it's still the same era imo. Ratting without worrying too much about blobs. PvP without worrying about huge blobs of rr bs or hotdrops of 20 carriers. Try your luck in the T2 BPO lottery (not that i'm saying it was a good thing). Moons not spammed with the powerblock deathstars for the biggest incomes. Low isk spammer/farmer ratio to players. Not everyone having 20 alts and thus dominating certain area's because the more you have the more you can own. etc etc.
I never was able to make use of the possibilities though by being inept in EvE next to knowing how to play the game without dying too much
On the other hand i'm still hoping/thinking we are going to get a new golden age with Incarna/planetary interaction/ maybe Dust..
Also hoping on the fact that eve and the devs and all will return to it's former friendlier (as friendly as the gruelsome nature of the game could attain) form because it's gotten a bit too clinical for my taste at times. More dev blogs, more interaction with the playerbase by devs with lots of humour like a couple years ago (when they could actually make a joke or 2 without all the new EvE-ians taking it like god has spoken), the return of ingame events run by ISD or CCP and generally alot less douches that think they own the game and can act like the douchebags they are because it's online and it's fun to be douchebags.
Also hoping on a complete rebalance of items with actual thought going into all the effects it has on the next best thing and it's mother before we get more T3 T4 T5 stuff that screws up alot of the other connections between ships/classes/bonusses etc., therefore inviting another round of nerfbat swinging screwing up more things than it fixes and therefore inviting a boost round..rinse and repeat.
All in all i'm still playing and pretty happy with the way things go but once in a while i /facepalm at certain events/decisions.
TL:DR version; Exodus/RMR = 22K gold (small things needed improvement, community was great) Apocrypha/Dominion 18K gold (some things are too ff'ed up and need serious attention, community has it's pearls but the douches are well represented) Near-Future expansions; 22K/24K gold. See above wishlist. |

There is no real answer to this question, all you can get is opinions. For ME though, I would say its a toss-up between Castor and RMR. Castor purely because Eve was still somewhat fresh for me and at the time felt SO big. You had Curse Alliance fighting Stain Alliance and everyone fighting everyone in between. I say RMR because I was flying in Arcane Frankologies and frankly, we were killing everything in sight. So purely on a "killing stuff" level, I would say those were the best times to be had. But who knows what the future holds for us |

And please, save the 'EVE is dying' rants for some other thread.
Right now. CCP banned over 6000 macros, we still have over 50 000 players online every week. Pilots are everywhere, known space, unknown space and having fun.
Massive fleet fights have never been without desynch, and probably never will - but EVE is not just massive fleet battles - EVE is much more than that.
EDIT: Age goldens memories... RMR wasn't that good at all... |

EVE Really does it for me but I am a RP-fanboy and it was biggest disappointment when I started playing and learned that you cannot exit your ship. Even to some silly, one-room lobby.
I seem to remember in "rookie help" every second message is someone saying "how do I leave my ship". Humans need human avatars imho.
I genuinely think that if CCP pull off Incarna and the Dust integration well then EVE will reach a golden age and the player base will rocket. |

Absolutely, yes. Even when i joined eve wasn't all that populated and capital ships online hadn't been in swing yet either. Back when nobody had a titan..you actually fought your way through the world.
Nowadays it's just bridging around. Gates have become meaningless unless there's a jammer.

Before the first 0.0 outpost was built I remember checking the map almost daily. Seeing a cyno field was like a "wow" moment for me, and because of the novelty of all the possibilities the game seemed more exciting.
The introduction of the Drone Regions was great too, but TBH since then its all mostly been meh because if you posted something as massive as a titan kill or about another new outpost in CAOD (major achievements), its just meh these days.
I hate to say it but I think the golden age is gone. |

As far as I know, they hired some "hacker" to break into BoB's forums and thats where the information was revealed. |

The golden age for me just so happens to be whenever my subscription is active, so shall it be with every other individual. If this isnt true then I have to question the sanity of those who continue to pay for a game they personally feel is in qualitative decline.

Edited by: AnonyTerrorNinja on 22/01/2010 14:14:14 Before all of the following:
Interdictors Mobile Warp Disruption Bubbles Recon ships Hulks with the larger cargohold (it used to be small enough that afk hold-mining in one made no sense and jetcan mining was still popular) Warp to zero (minus the lag it removed* in the form of epic bookmark lists)
All of this is only from a PVP viewpoint to me, tho - Recons are great and all, but the rook/falcon became fotm too easily, turning any fight into a one-sided affair as soon as the opposition uncloaked their falconblob.
Because of falcon.
*edit* The day I post a non-dyslexified reply is the day EVE stops lagging... ---

Tbh I kinda miss places to actually fight.
Most fighs taks place on either gates or stations.
and at both of thoose locations you got a safe way out most of the times. :( --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
