I'm noticing that no one ransoms anymore. I made the noob mistake of flying my hawk in lowsec without a warp stabilizer or any ECM (not nec, just a personal pref), and lost it after about 2 hours of ratting. When I tried to hail the person, and then people attacking me, I was ignored. Is ransoming deemed unprofitable these days, or have we shifted to the epeen stroking that is posting your kills?

It was just your bad luck not to be ambushed by proper pirates. Proper pirates who ransom do still exist. ---------- Dear CCP: please refresh the forum avatars more frequently. I didn't pay $10 so I could continue to look like a complete goofball.

Well, I certainly feel better knowing it was just a stroke of bad luck, rather than the loss of "proper" pirates. Nothing against getting my ship blown up, I just like "proper" pirates more. Aside from keeping your ship, the conversations can usually be pretty entertaining.

What's wrong with the hawk? I'm guessing you have nothing against assault frigates, just that my factional choice was a bad one in your opinion.

The Hawk is widely perceived as being one of the least useful ships in the game.
And ransoming is still practiced by a fair few pirates, I just do not know what percentage, or how many will honour them (which is the critical thing in your case, after all.). Then again, ransoms aren't alway offered, it can be impractical.

The Bastards honor all ransoms. That doesn't mean that they will always offer one.

The Hawk is pretty much useless until CCP get around to either the roflket fix, or the AF AB boost...in fact most AF's are overpriced for what they do, and can be beaten by pretty much anything aside from T1 frigs, In packs they are quite effective however.

We mostly stopped ransoming when everything caught in a belt became a FW blob baitship.

We always ransom pods if local is not too bussy. Problem with ship ransom is:
1. You can still shoot back 2. Usually only people with expensive loot pays up, might have made just as much popping the person

Is this one isolated incident or have you lost multiple ships to pirates without a single ransom offer?
Originally by: Alice Lidell I made the noob mistake of flying my hawk in lowsec without a warp stabilizer or any ECM (not nec, just a personal pref), and lost it after about 2 hours of ratting.
2 hours in lowsec ratting is pretty good going. Next time, watch local and watch your directional scanner

Not everyone offers a ransom. Just because some corps offer a ransom doesn't mean everyone does. We only ransom pods most of the time, since people tend to have the mindset that their ships are free etc cos they mine minerals themselves and build their own ships or modules etc. No one makes their own implants ! That way you get both the killmail and any loot on board, plus ransom for the pod. Win-win-win situation tbh.

OK, so the warp core stab bit makes me think troll, but otherwise you make a valid point.
The problem is that most ransoms that people are willing to pay aren't that much. For one, the ransomee, quite reasonably, thinks the pirate may not honour the ransom and so makes a calculated decision on how much they are willing to risk with a ransom offer. Considering the amount of blob baits or people who try to stall whilst they can either run back to the gate or call for support it is no wonder many pirates go for my next point ....
Secondly, the pirate can make a decent return simply from the dropped loot ... fittings and cargo ... when I used to pirate the most common smack was 'oh you only pick on noobs in haulers, you cant pvp, why dont you fight in 0.0 like real man' etc etc. Truth is, when I pirated it had nothing to do with PVP. It was all about ISK. If I was a mugger in real life I would not try to mug the guy built like a brick ****ter holding a knife .... oh no ... I would steal the life savings from the frail old granny. Luckily this is just a game so that's OK. I'm nice in RL.
So I blew up lots of haulers and defenceless bears. Lame yes, but one was chock full of morphite, others had a T2 ships in them, a shuttle got caught in our gate camp and dropped a quality NYX BPC, a ratting destroyer got popped with a large faction tower BPC in its hold.
My point is, why ransom a hauler or shuttle for mere pennies when the loot they may drop could be worth billions. And if I did happen to catch your hawk .... how much would you be willing to pay for your safety? 5 mil, 10 mil, 20 mil? The mods it would drop would probably come to over 5 mil at least. Freighters, faction BS, carriers and marauders .... yes they would be worth ransoming, but none of them would even lower them selves to answering a ransom request so they got popped (or they got back up and popped us) so again no point ransoming.
If you ARE ransomed do the following.
Agree a price FAST Pay as soon as a price has been settled Do not stall for time or try to escape Report here any corp/individual who does not honour ransoms Don't fly your expensive **** in low sec
Sorry for wall of text
TL;DR Blowing you **** up and scooping the loot is as profitable as the small ransoms your are willing to pay. |

Try looking at the glass half full.
My first (and only) ransom was a waste of time and isk. Some time ago in low sec I was ransomed and ship was still destroyed. I contacted the CEO who laughed, called me stupid, and added I should have been podded for extra icing on the cake.
Not that I'm offered ransoms, but with all the pirates that abound these forums in support of dishonoring ransoms because it's "extra free isk" is the reason I don't pay.
Consider yourself lucky you only lost your ship.

Might help if people still bothered to pay them.
Between paranoia of dishono(u)r whipped up by a couple of hysterical forum types and the general smacktardness one encounters when someone is upset that they've been caught and their boat is about to get violenced it's quicker and easier for everyone involved just to blow them away.

So was Drake and 3/4s of Caldari ships but that does not make it the truth.

I've been pod ransomed before, but it's usually a ****ing silly offer based on the assumption that everyone flies around in lo/nosec with +5's. I typically tell them to go **** themselves, and enjoy the time saved warping back to a logistics station.

No point in paying ransom. If you can't afford losing the ship or cargo, don't bring it to lowsec or don't fly it in the first place. Chances are they wont offer it anyways, or they will, take your money, and blow you up. So continue to starve pirates out of lowsec and the game by not giving them what they want-ignore lowsec and ransoming both.

One time, we were roaming and this ISK seller had been following us in a shuttle for like 20 jumps. He finally hesitated (or something) and I managed to snag him with my Onyx.
It was, quite honestly, one of the most satisfying kills I've ever had.

Only time I was ransomed recently was by an annoying inty pilot in W-space, had me jammed so I couldn't escape, and neither of us could kill each other. After ten minutes of discussion I paid 50 mil and was on my way, T3 fully intact.
Maybe you just keep finding killmail *****s?
