Depends on what you want to use it for. But since you seem like you probably don't even know that, then probably the drake cause even a total noob can throw some heavy missiles in the highs and throw tank across the rest of the fittings and almost look like they know what they are doing.

it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to mine, a Ferox will be better ;)

NO turrets on a Drake, so I don't think mining is the target activity.
Drake prolly better, some missile sills and some shield skills and pew pew. ---------------

Drake has got a dronebay though ;)
Seriously - what I wanted to point out: its difficult to give an answer when the question is like that. Still for most purposes the Drake should be superior.

Before the Drake existed the Ferox was the go-to battlecruiser for PvE, since it had the most missile slots. Now that it can mount six turrets it's become a potentially formidable long-distance gunboat, but requires high skillpoints to fit properly for this role and perform decently. Drake is really superior in most ways to the Ferox though, particularly if you're a newer player.

Ferox is a Turret Boat. Drake is a Missile Boat.
The fact that Drake > Ferox in most stuff Does not mean Missiles > Turrets No, the Ferox is not > Drake in PvP. Yes, more ppl will underestimate a Drake than a Ferox, and maybe for a good reason.
A scraming/blasting Ferox can be fun for PvP, just like a similarly fitted Moa (although the Ferox can actually both buffer and active tank quite well, the moa should only buffer tank).
@To the OP For PvE, the Drake is way more effective and versatile than a Ferox.
Also, if you cannot or barely can afford the hull, for sure you cannot afford a proper fitting, so don't rush into buying any of them. Skill up a bit (say BC @ lvl 4), look up some mission drake setups (basically be able to fit Large Shield extenders, preferably T2 shield amps/hardeners and Heavy Missile Launchers) and skill up according to those. When you have relevant skills @ lvl 3-4, you might get one. If not, stay with a caracal or something, doing lvl 2 missions and save your money. Drake is a easy start in lvl 3 missions and lvl 4 are survivable with some aggro management. Drakes like support skills, especially powergrid/cpu for tight fittings.
Problem with ferox is that it can't be fitted to outdamage a drake. Not in blaster versus HAM, not in 70km sniping versus HML and not in tech2 railgun faction AM versus tech2 HML faction scourge.

Im guessing you want a Drake.

no, drake is better than ferox in everything except mining. Better EHP, great range, option for good dps (hams).. Ferox is utter **** as are all the hybrid boats with an optimal bonus (except rokh, it's passable). Just trust me on this don't fly a ferox ;).
Ferox gets an optimal bonus so it is technically a sniper, but it does laughable dps so if you PvP fit you will use blasters and still do subpar dps with no range.

Don't use your PVE fitted Drake to Pvp, it won't work.
The Drake is considered to be the best BC (for pvp) in the game by most pvpers. It also does very good at solo pvp.

Pretty much any PvE fit isn't very good for PvP. The Dominix is the only ship that springs to mind that can get away with that. However anyone who says the Ferox is better for PvP is just plain wrong. There really is very little you can do better in a Ferox, and that list comprises ... err. Mining.
The answer to the OP is the Drake - the _only_ reason to use a Ferox is if you have some kind of moral objection to missiles - even a 'ranged' fit, the Ferox range isn't much more than a heavy missile drake, and ... whilst flight time is a consideration, so is doing half the damage. Just so. The Ferox is _not_ a better PvP ship than the Drake. Lower damage capability, lower range and fewer midslots in anotherwise identic

Btw, if you still rely on an Osprey to mine, you will be astonished to see the Ferox is better than it, due to more slots for Miners. Afaik even with Caldari Cruiser on 5 the Osprey wont be much better :)
Ah, and when you paint your Ferox black and give it some red stripes too it will be much better ;)

Get a clue please. The Drake is simply better than the Ferox. Save up and get one. After insurance (if pvp is what you have in mind) the price difference is minimal.
The one thing the Ferox can do which the Drake can't is do paint chipping dps at 100km, and the HML Drake does pretty respectable dps at 70, so that's a pretty narrow nichT. _________________________________

I dont know your Ishkur-fitting, but how do you want to kill/apply enough DPS on a Drake in an Ishkur?

Put a couple of missile velocity and a missile flight time rigs on a drake and it will get 118Km range with about 3 times the DPS of the Ferox.
BTW to the guy who said the Ferox mines more than the Osprey: no it doesn't; at Cruiser V, both have 6 effective mining lasers. But the Osprey is 80% cheaper.
There is nothing the Ferox does that can't be done considerably better by at least 1 other ship.

He can't, he would pop. At least against any kind of decent fit and pilot. He might be able to kite the Drake if its using HAMs, but its a long shot :). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Ferox' defense it does have a considerable underestimation factor that the Drake no longer has.

ALWAYS fly to your skills. Primarily the ferox is a gun ship, so if you get better dps in the ferox then use that. As the drake is a missile boat, if you have better skills and dps in the drake, go for that.
If you are plannin on what one to use in the future, ask 'do i want to be guns or missiles in the future' that will answer your question for you. Bear in mind that if you want to be doing lots of PvP guns 'may' be the way forward-it is certainly the accepted/prefered PvP armement for several reasons i wont go into here. Do note however, that having said this, I did not take this route and still enjoy lots of PvP in a pure missile toon. If you are goin PvE it doesnt really matter and you will get more DPS out of the missile drake.
Also note, the drake has a better tank, certainly its reputed to be the best passive tank in game, its definately the best passive tank of the T1 class, and even a fair number of T2's (including bigger more expensive ships). Ive just build a 800mil tengu that cant beat the t2 fitted drake tank i have - although I admit the 1000+dps tank drake i have does not have an afterburner and also has half the dps- but then thats why T3's cost so much more.
Good luck with the fit

I can answer your question with another question: Are you skilled towards Hybrids or Missiles? If you're Hybrid skilled, you're obviously going to do ****ty DPS with a Drake, while if you're missile skilled, you're going to do ****ty DPS with a Ferox.
A blaster-fit Ferox is my BC of choice. Why? Because I LIKE Caldari Hybrid boats. Not because it's better at X, Y or Z, not because it's FOTM, but because I like it, and screw what everyone else says. 400+ DPS and 65-70k eHP is nothing to scoff at and gives, at least in my opinion, a nice mix of tank and gank, and it'll out-range a Brutix or Myrm (especially with Null). Sure, I could fly a Drake, but with my skills it'll have maybe 5k eHP more than a Ferox, and do LESS damage (although my 90k SP in missiles might have something to do with that...), and I doubt I'll end up skilling towards a weapon system that I hate.
A Ferox is often under-estimated in PvP, and you're much more likely to get decent engagements (none of this "Oh **** it's a Drake, quick, we need everyone to break it's tank!"). It also makes a fairly decent bait for fleets, since unlike a Drake or a Prophecy, a Ferox doesn't scream "BAIT!" if you see one on scan, while still maintaining a decent tank.
Despite what people might say, the Ferox is still an effective BC, and if you're hybrid spec'd and like flying shield tanked ships, it's a nice choice. Sexy looking, too.

If it's for PvP I'm not so convinced.
The Brutix struggles with being a blaster ship with an armor tank bonus, it fields an impressive ammount of gank with a shield fit but by doing so it loses out on a bonus.
The Ferox may be less ganky but it can still dish out 450-500DPS at respectable ranges, whilst fitting a sizable buffer (55-80k EHP depending on fit). It also has a spare highslot that can be used to fit a neut or a nos.
All in all I think that the Ferox is a much more well rounded ship.

And if your gunnery is that much better than your missiles you're flying the wrong race and should be looking into flying Amarr or Minmatar. Hybrids just plain suck compared to lasers and ACs. There's a reason the laser Ferox is surprisingly more effective than it sounds. _________________________________

This. I primarily fly in roaming Fleets and Gatecamps. I'm never, ever primaried, unlike my glass-cannon brutix friends. I sport a buffer tank almost equal to a drake, 77k EHP and deal 500+ DPS. Drop the scram if you have enough hictors, and you get 97k EHP.
If caldari dropped their Optimal bonuses in favor of damage bonuses. We could actually compete with Amarr in tank + gank. Currently, we are only known for tank :(
