Trolls please leave. :\ -----------------------------
Hi fellow EVE players!
About a year ago I posted a query for help in this very forum regarding an analysis I needed help with. At the time it was concerning Physics in EVE, and why/how things ended up like they did for EVE.
This time around, however, it's not nearly as interesting an analysis that I need help with.. But none the less, it needs doing.
So, if as many of you as possible could respond to these questions as detailed as possible, I'd be eternally grateful! Honestly, ther might be tears! (firefly ftw! :D ). I might even go as far as to send you a symbolic gift of .1 isk as thanks :)
Anyways, on to the questions!
There are in essence 3 different situations that I need you to consider;
- 1. Imagine 2 characters, 1 male 1 female, in the same 3 systems all at different times. (This to even out any indiscrepancies etc)
Both characters ask the following out in local chat; "Could someone help me choose what skills to pick next? I'm lost :\"
How would you react to all 6 situations (1 male, 1 female characters in 3 different systems)? (if you're short on time or whatev, please answer at least once for the male, once for the female :) )
- 2. Again , imagine 2 characters, 1 male 1 female, in the same 3 systems all at different times. (This to even out any indiscrepancies etc). These 3 systems are missionhubs, and youÆre afking/doing missions/whatever.
Suddenly, the character (mind you, again, only 1 at a time at different times) asks the following in local:
ôCould someone please help me kill this Mercenary Captain? I canÆt take him out by myself ):ö
How do you react to the male/female? What would you say? (Remember, 6 different situations; 1 male, 1 female characters in 3 different systems) (if you're short on time or whatev, please answer at least once for the male, once for the female :) )
- 3. In 3 trade-hub systems imagine 2 characters, 1 male 1 female, asking out in local for 1 million isk for a new ship.
How do you react to the male/female? What would you say? (Remember, 6 different situations; 1 male, 1 female characters in 3 different systems) (if you're short on time or whatev, please answer at least once for the male, once for the female :) )
Now, that's it.. Please answer as detailed as possible; write down what you would reply in local/IM etc.
Now, the more the merrier, so. :D
Thanks all! /Nebarus

Edited by: Nebarus on 25/02/2010 01:10:00 I actually know several female players..
But you missed the point of it all; I never said female players, I said female characters.
Now, if you wouldn't react differently to either character based on their gender, then that's what you should write, not stuff that doesn't really help me in any way :\
Thanks for reading though, ...

Edited by: Nemesis Factor on 25/02/2010 01:13:13 I treat ALL eve players as if they were men, since they most likely are.
That being said, I tend to help people out if I have the time (ie: not just passing through). I tend to keep helpful links and tutorials in my notes to simply paste into local.
But to answer your question, I treat everyone the same by default, and raise or lower my friendliness depending on how much of a knob they are being.
Edit: I keep my character portraits really small, so I can't even tell. I suppose I can't exactly answer the question fairly. ~/~ Sultan of Buruni |

No, it really doesn't.
There's absolutely no value in your little study as you're asking people on the internet to tell you the truth about their reactions. Any and all responses are worthless (yes, I include my own response in that evaluation). If you want real data then create characters, hop in game and ask the questions.

Not to poop on your very nice and in-depth study, but a few things I've noted:
What 3 systems are we talking about? I don't think my answers would vary all that much from system to system. A high population system like a trade-hub might have other people responding, which psychologically would bias me (I might for example step in to defend the querying player if they were taking a bit of flame, or possibly partake in said flaming.)
I doubt my response would vary based on the character's icon being a male or female face. My response would be almost entirely dependent on the writing, not the avatar.
In scenario 1 I would respond by directing the inquirer to a place such as the skills or new players forum sections, or possibly the help chat. I would do the same regardless of the portrait on the character.
In scenario 2 I would not respond to any of them, I don't like ratting and / missions.
In scenario 3 I would respond by saying "Character X, I've sent you 1 million." as I always do, regardless of the portrait on the character. This in the hopes that others will think I have transfered the money, so that they will not transfer any money.
Hope this helps.

Speaking as a female player, I'd like to invite you to wander on down to lowsec and then tell the Hellcats that they're male.
Let me know how that works out for you.
Also, please fraps the resultant encounter. It should be amusing for all.
Edit: On the topic of the OP. I try and treat people based on how they act, not on what they look like, or their respective genitalia. If you act like an asshat, I will smack you around like one. If you ask politely, and occasionally remember to say thank you, I'll probably answer the question, within the bounds of reason.
On your specific questions: 1. I would ask the player what their long term and short term goals are, try and give them advice, and then recommend they get Eve HQ. 2. I've been known to help out other people in missions, but not very often. I'm normally busy with something else. I have been known to send out the request to corp and alliance mates though, if any are around. 3. I do not give ISK to people who ask in local. --Vel

Usually id help out both players, no matter male or female avatar. Mostly I dont even look at the avatars really.. Unless its in such a system that im merely traveling through, which case id ignore them. if i was mining or something id certainly help, as ive nothing better to do anyway..
As for helping kill mission rats; I would only do that if I was incredibly bored (agents gave me crappy missions in a row) and I had something other than my battleship handy (something slightly more pimp, like a sacri or zealot).. and even then, id usually ignore them (i dont idle in my mission hub often, usually If i cant do anything ill just log off and do something else) And even if i did help, it certainly wouldnt be without a bit of questioning first (someone who is trying to just get me killed is easy enough to spot really)
Trade hubs? ignore. OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! SRSLY! Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. Lance is also amarrian. Thats 3 evil points |

I try to treat guys/gals the same in RL, so I carry over that mentality to Eve.
Additionally, female characters are almost indubitably male players, so my responses would be identical in each situation.
Finally, I hope you don't consider this poll scientific ... |

I'd have to say my reply in all 3 (x2) cases would also be to Ignore.
And since playing online I pretty much assume everyone is a bunch of pixels (maybe leaning more towards the male gender) my response to them doesn't change no matter what their avatar looks like. If anything it is how they ask their questions and how they behave that influences whether I'll even listen to (or read) what they have to say or not, again regardless of gender. |

what is the point of asking the same question for 3 systems
also this is a terribly unscientific poll since most people IF THEY STOP TO THINK ABOUT IT will say that they'll give the same answer to someone regardless of gender. so your poll sucks.
i dont care what gender someone's avatar is, if they ask for help on skills, fitting, missions, whatever, my response depends on how busy or bored i am. ________________

We get your point, girl characters are of course going to get a more favorable response when the population is vastly guys. Doesn't work very well in EVE because all you get is a dinky portrait, but while playing a girl avatar in Guild Wars, I got tons of free stuff without having to do anything really.

What difference does it make if they are male / female, local is never open unless I need to check stats (who is red, who blue not who is male who is female), if someone in the corp / alliance asked for help depending on how they asked I would help, saying "I am female" will just get a ****y reply back.
Besides most players make female chars because the male ones turn them on too much FIRST!! |

Since character faces do not show by default in game, quite a few players out there would chatting to others not even knowing what their characters looks like or what its gender is because they do not bother to click on portraits. Thus they will give standard reply in all situations you described. You can even take a male brutor character give him name like "Kathie Johnson" and chat and flirt as if you are female irl, and some time will lapse before dudes will start doing "wtf" in chat channel.

You're going to find less (though still a fair bit, I'll grant) of the e-white knight nonsense that insists girl gamers would/should be treated differently than male ones in Eve.
As to my answers:
1. Ignore both, every time.
2. Ignore both, every time.
3. For both: Offer to throw nickles at his/her face if he/she will dance like a monkey. If I buy someone's dignity, I want to get my money's worth. ----------------

You're in a game full of alts, where character gender is meaningless and altruism is almost non-existent. This psychology study is a meaningless waste of time.
Avg age for players are generally > 27 years (iirc) - seasoned veterans, less hormonally challenged As for my answer, easy - ignore ALL. |

Really its just like life. There are four kinds of people:
1. Men that scream blue murder if a woman's **** pop out on live TV yet are desperate to get laid.
2. Women that wear dungarees and think all men are rapists.
3. People that think sexual innuendo is the height of wit and will get them a partner.
4. The majority of us that do not give a toss.
