It's good the marketing dept is comming up with new offers for it's player base, however.
This '5.00 Activation Fee' smacks of typical marketing deception tactics, used to draw you in and make you think you are getting a better deal than whats actually on offer, used by a good number of todays ISPs, subscription services, and in small print on various phone contracts.
9.95 to make a new account? Neat, then 14.95 after that. Then you find out the first month is exactily the same cost factoring in $5.00 of apparent 'costs' to the company, such as electricity, hamster food, beer, and so on.
Please don't start going the way of typical deceptive advertising practices, if it costs 14.95 for the first month, then thats what you should be putting down, otherwise I want a full breakdown of exactily what costs to CCP are covered by this 'activation fee'
tl;dr: EVE's marketing workers need a slap in the face

I saw that too, made me smirk. Its a very cheap way of advertising something, pretending its cheaper now then it was before. But then again, meh, CCP is in the business of doing business = profit.
If they want to look cheap, so be it.

I also agree, bad form of CCP to advertise as Ç9.95 when in reality it costs Ç14.95. It is cheaper to go buy from Shattered Crystal (30 day starter pack) which is $19.95 which is actually cheaper than what CCP is offering. I would have thought it should be cheaper from CCP than third party sites but apparently not.
Shame....

It's not cost thats the issue, it's what precedents are being set by this fee for the future, though you are probably well aware of that anyway

New accounts have always been advertised as $14.95 plus a $5 activation fee. The only thing that's changed is they've reduced that $14.95. There's nothing deceptive about it, that's what it's always been.
The first time I bought the game I knew it was $14.95 plus $5 activation fee. I could look at it as a $5 game with no free time or a $20 game with a free month. I never felt that I was tricked into paying more money than I should have.
As soon as you go to the website they're pretty up front about it, and the link on the main site says right in the link image the fee. The only time I've seen it neglected to be mentioned is in-game at the login screen. Well, people already playing the game should be aware of the activation fee and shouldn't be surprised that they didn't reduce the price of the game AND remove the activation fee.

What's pretend about it? It is cheaper than usual ($14.95 + $5 > $9.95 + $5). ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Good point, I do recall that trial accounts activated have some days deducted from whatever is added to them as the fee, so this would be the trial+activation without the lost days, covered by the fee
Makes a bit more sense, but at first glance and by the outsider, there is no ready explanation/justification of the fee ;p

The cost of said account is in EUROS and not DOLLARS. If you convert this at todays rates it means the "New" offer actually costs $22.40 which is $3.45 more than what it costs from a third party site.

ACTIVATION FEE.

Nice try CCP. Luckily the players are used to scams like this ingame and always read the small print.

Well, that would explain why everyone fell for it the first time they subscribed: they hadn't played the game yet and gotten into the right mindset… ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

EVE normally costs $20 to activate ($15 subscription + $5 activate fee). No matter how you look at it, you're still saving $5 on this sale; I don't know what you're complaining about... $15 is still less than $20 no matter how you look at it.
I'd rather spend $5 to activate ONCE than $30-$50 for a new game box EACH time an expansion is released (WoW, candyland edition comes to mind).

Did you guys see this?
Quote: Trial accounts are not eligible for this offer
You know what this means? It means it costs $14.95 for 30 days.
If you begin a trial account and then activate it normally, it costs 19.95 for 30+14 days. Which is cheaper on a cost-per-day basis.
You are saving nothing on this sale.

What struck me as odd was not the 'deceptive advertising' (really, it says it costs +5 euro RIGHT THERE) but the fact you can't use it to upgrade a trial account.
This offer: 14,95 for new account with 30 days = 49 cents per day of playtime
Regular: 19,95 for upgrading a 21 day trial account to full with 30 days, 51 days in total = 39 cents per day of playtime.

Please at least read the thread or the details of the promotion.
In short, they didn't remove it.

Eh, nvm, my point stands, that fee is stupid if it can be circumvented by using PLEX and should be removed asap. - Arkanon: EXPLAIN YOURSELF, EVILDOER! Sharkbait: Dude. |

Never fails to amaze me how companies think anyone gives a rat's arse how the amount someone needs to pay to sign up is calculated. Just tell me how much you want...single amount...no fluffy bunny words.

'Deceptive' is probably too strong of a word in that case ;p

I believe the 5 bucks activation fee is for the software license you need for every account... I believe it's used to pay the fees for 3rd party software used in the client.
At least that is what I can remember from a devpost a while back....

That's all nice and well, but who cares about that? All that matters is the final price.
The pizza service around the corner here also offers "50% Off*" and then in small print "(* +2Ç food preparation flat rate)". I think my translation of that sucks, but you get the idea...

Companies prey on people who think like that. You think "oh, it's just 5 dollars" for 10 things and you're out 50 bucks.

Edited by: Kulmid on 24/03/2010 18:55:18 When I started playing this game, it was advertised as a one time fee of $19.95 which activated your account and gave you a "free" first month, which was really just $14.95 subscription fee + $5 activation fee, then every month after that it would be $14.95. I am confused by all the different things people are saying in this thread, but it sounds to be cheaper. Maybe I am misunderstanding.

I'm also almost 100% sure this is incorrect. You can clearly see they use $ and not Ç. I doubt they would attempt to deceive like that. Also, its probably the same price for all currency, CCP has never seemed to care about international currency exchange rates and as far as I know has been charging english players ú14.95 and American players $14.95 meaning english players were paying approx. 30% more than American players for quite some time.
Edit: I just read the offer and it is indeed cheaper to activate an account than it was previously. _________________

I'm astounded at the number of people in this thread (starting with the OP) who don't seem to realize that the $5 activation fee has always been there. ----- 'In Eve, as in real life, if you are bored it's your own fault.' |
