I've been playing MMO's since 2006/7 starting with WoW (the only MMO at the time compatible with the Mac). Anyway, while I enjoy MMO's, I'm a sci-fi fan at heart. I played EVE for awhile once it became available for Mac, but left due to time constraints (travelling abroad, etc.).
Well, Star Trek Online was announced, and I have to say, I am definitely a fan. A trekkie even (though I don't speak any Klingon, and I've never dressed up... except for halloween). STO was released, and to make a long story short... the game was a MASSIVELY huge disappointment.
I wanted to know if there are any other Star Trek Online refugees who have left and came over to EVE. I've read several times on their forums of people leaving to try EVE. So, guessing that there might be a lot of STO refugee nooBs, it'd be cool to hook up and fly together.
Thanks EVE. You're quality.

Discussion of other games is not allowed forum section in this f blah blah blah.
But to answer your question, many people have came to Eve after trying STO due to the other being a failure and people saying things like "Eve is waaaay better" on their forums and in-game.

All incarnations of Star Trek in the form of games have been huge disappointments. From the time I played Star Trek games when I was a kid through to now, they've all been disappointments. So, don't feel bad.

Welcome to Eve: The Sandbox with land mines.
For all the smack you get the forum just remember: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but pulse lasers will vaporize my ship"
All aside though, Eve is about a 180 degrees from STO, theres going to be a massive adjustment, many won't make it. Hope you do. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

A whole 3 weeks? Eve must have become easier to learn than when I started.

STo was a disappointment, I think it has some nice ideas, but in practice the game was just a very bad at launch with little content. however we will see, I think its a good framework.
I on the other hand have been an eve player for years, So I was playing STO on-line thinking, "Pointless" and just logged back in to eve.
Welcome to EvE, where you have to keep yourself amused,

When SWG augered in, myself and a bunch of others came here to EVE. Some of us- I assume- are still around. No reason the same thing can't happen with ST:O refugees.

I've been playing EVE for a while, went over to STO when it came out, decided I did not like it and returned to EVE. I prefer the very open world and the option to do anything over the strict mission order and level limits present in STO.
It's a bit unfair to judge an MMO after such a short time, but I figure I give it some time to mature before I have another look.
I do hope that CCP looks at STO as well and takes some hints how to integrate ship mode and character mode together (as well as how to build missions around both), but apart from both being interweb spaceship games the two of them have very little in common.

I seriously hope STO rejects dont start popping up here. Just looking at the amount of whining on their forums makes my head hurt

No disagreement here, BUT at least the ST games get released, much unlike certain SG games^^ -

I'm terribly disapointed that STO has failed. I was hoping that it would be a success, and hopfully a BSG mmo would be released also
i pray my vision will come true, and eve will be free of trekkies and 'toasters'...

I tried STO and was really let down. I won't list all the reasons as to why, but EVE is where it is at.

Two dimensional movement in 3D space was enough for me. I know CCP wreck physics but that was hilarious. Anyway the only thing they had in common is that they were Science Fiction. Even the space analogy fails.

I guess you can be forgiven for being a relative newb to MMOs, but even then its hard not to see that STO is one huge IP cashgrab.
I played the beta with no preconceptions or demands and even then I was blown away over how utterly unoriginal and reused the game mechanics were. Its like they made a concerted effort to simply reskin a 3rd person generic fantasy MMO. I honestly had more fun in Earth and Beyond, and that had no pvp. |

IMO EVE stands in a class of its own. All the content is player-driven. Let that sink in for a minute...
No safe zones. Just you, your ship, your wits and the rest of the universe.
I played the STO beta. All I can say is, my Constitution class mount carried my Level 13 spacemage quickly across the star-realm and to the Borg dungeons in the most scifi and not fantasy way possible.

STO didnt even have the fonts or the UI layout changed since CoV!
i watched a freind play STO for about 15 minutes before i said to myself "ohh i like the shield direction thingy, but everything else looks like an increadably dumbed down EvE, for kids" and went to login on my laptop and play some EvE.
Lets just hope out of these STO refugees they are not all space-WoW-cowboys who will cry when they loose their first ship and cant find the "respawn everything as it was before you died with no penelty" button and hit the forums asking for eve to be easyer.

I too crossed over to give STO a try and also give EVE a needed break. It is as stated above, a very raw game, obviously released probably a year too early. There is a definite unfinished feel to it. It can never be a sand box as it's just too instanced, so it will forever have the theme park feel to it.
As to the player base, I would say most are refugees from WoW. Some that are frothing at the mouth for open space PvP will migrate over, but a few deaths will slow that froathing down to a drool.
Over all, I would like to give it a year, and go back and see how Cryptic has polished it. It's a real good casual player game that can easily be played in a relaxed leisurely mode of play. Since there is nothing to worry about when you die. Some of the higher level mission show promise in they're writing, and actually can tell a decent story. <=========================================> Originally by: CCP Wrangler EVE isn't designed to just look like a cold, dark and harsh world, it's designed to be a cold, dark and harsh world.

I guess you never heard of Begin or Nettrek. They were top games at its (ancient) time. I'm surprised Nettrek is still being played after 25+ years.

In before the lock...YES! Its my understanding from players that were in the open and closed beta test for <game name removed> that they devs got to a point and then seemed to just quit developing anything. Sad really...a game that could do justice to that genre would be truly awesome if done right, but it hasn't happened yet.
