I'm going to watch it tonight with some friends, it will also be the first time I've seen it but I'm not expecting much beyond Blue Pocahontas. Granted, there has been a lot of work put into the CGI in the film but if a film needs a massive screen and 3D to enjoy it then it isn't that great a film, that's just my opinion.

I watched Avatar on a 16" laptop screen, it is still the best film I have seen this year.

I'm glad you say that, I may enjoy it yet as I will also be watching on a laptop screen.

Beyond the special effects a truly awful film, almost as bad as Titanic, in fact it's to close to call.
Look at it this way if it was a book how do you think it would do?

That is pretty much what was going on in my head while I was watching the film for the first time, the story was almost a direct extension of FernGully. Really annoyingly I got Batty's introduction song stuck in my head for half the film... so hard to concentrate on a film with that in your head.
Directors & screen-writers have lost all creativity lately. :\

That's just the thing. The 3D looks no different than it did 29 years ago when I saw "Comin' At Ya" (1981). The polarized glasses make everything look dim and unreal. For all the hype. the 3D didn't add anything to the movie, and was in fact, a bit annoying. Especially since "Comin' At Ya" was a lot more entertaining - it was intentionally cheesy. I can't even say "Avatar" was cheesy. It was just dull. And often dumb.
In the final analysis "Avatar" is just another dull, predictable action movie that adds nothing to the genre. Pick a random Schwarzenegger action flick, and you'll have a more enjoyable movie than "Avatar."

Well, if they don't have nukes due to "whatever" reason (or if they're afraid they'd blow up the unobtanium with a nuke but not with regular bombs) there's always : * carpet bombing (traditional or napalm) from the stratosphere or whateverosphere (however high the damn birds can't possibly reach), * artillery fire (or other forms of indirect fire) from so far away they can't even see anybody * standard poison in all the water supply nearby the blue villages * biological warfare agents custom-tailored to the blue thingies (hey, you got their DNA on record, good enough to create human-blue hybrids anyway so don't tell me you can't whip up some blue-only plague), * dirty bombs if finesse is too much to ask for, and other avenues are too expensive * plausible deniability with false flag ops - make them kill each-other (they kind of seem inclined to do so on their own anyway, and the "Earthlings" only needed one particular location... just fake some things that would make the other nearby tribes go on a killing spree instead of forming an alliance)
Oh, and some more things... since, you know, the damned hybrids are basically remote-controlled, you SHOULD be able to have some surveillance gear on the stupid things, if not even a direct feed from the eyes displayed on a screen... and when your already-known-liability guy starts going bonkers and constantly fails to deliver on its promises, quickly review some of that footage at the POST-MORTEM COURT-MARTIAL for the benefit of the higher-ups _AFTER_ you already executed him for treason.
Last but not least : "hey, we're humans from planet Earth, we need some of the rocks in your ground, can we trade you something for them ?" ___
TL;DR : splendid visuals, corny, overdone, pocahontas-dances-with-wolves-through-ferngully-in-space, over-the-top tripe movie. I've seen Saturday morning cartoons when I was little that had much more reasonable/believable storytelling.

Which was no longer that much of a concern near the end of the movie, and no longer a concern at all at the very end.

It's kind of common sense that if you transmit something so complex as complete motor control and sensory interaction, even if for some obscure reason you couldn't "decode" the sensory data as pictures, you should be able to also transmit something else too (as in, whatever the hell you please, from whatever gear strapped on or implanted into the hybrid).
Quote: I didn't watch the part where they mention the failed attempts to trade
The "send the blue hybrid" WAS supposed to be a combined intel gathering op / diplomatic mission, to either get them to trade by learning what they might want/need, or to convince them to move peacefully... the "find out weak spot so we can beat them into submission" part was a secondary (and not even completely official) objective.

At which point they had to work with what they already had, and tried to mount exactly the kind of operation you suggest.

Aside from the obvious storyline comparisons, if you check out the wikipedia Avatar discussion page I think you'll find sources for a lot of the elements of the world which he ripped off too, from old novels and such.
I don't think anything (anything) in that film was original. -

Well, I suppose you could stretch it to mean that, but they certainly did a pathetic job planning it, considering what they already knew about the natives and their "pets".

You mean, on the (insanely expensive) remotely controlled hybrid human-alien bodies "piloted" by one soldier and two scientists working for the military, while in very dangerous territory ? Oh, yeah, I wouldn't ever bother putting all kinds of surveillance gear and 24/7 monitoring equipment on that, no sir ! But I would put a motion-activated wireless IP webcam to watch pigeons landing on my rooftop ! [/sarcasm]
