bah, not....another....thread....please.
Ore thieving is here to stay, and rightly so. HJigh sec space offers no defense against them except good group organisation or secure containers.
Low sec space offers the right of defense. this is a slight advanatage to low sec empire space, which is a good thing since it can use one.

They are absolutely useless for mining.
I completely agree. You should all continue to use jet cans. I don't think that any self respecting miner would be seen dead with one of those awful secure containers.
my corp uses secure cans next to stations and next to roid fields. but only to put rat loot in at roid fields and things in the ones next the station becasue docking takes to damn long ----------------------------------------------- Linkage |

how to stop ore thieves
step 1: CCP makes it to where only gang or corp members can take or put stuff in your can.
step 2: always have a friend next to you in a kestral to blown them away b4 concord ganks the kestral ----------------------------------------------- Linkage |

CCP knows ore thieves are a problem, that is why they are working to get sec status hits on people who steal. I just hope they come out with it in a patch soon.

If you are able to mine smart you won't have an issue. There just aren't enough Ore thiefs to bother people. Put they are around. So you have to pick the right locations. besides it's more profitable to mine in areas where there are no ore thieves anyway bigger rats and less chance they are going to risk getting attacked.
Though I seem to remeber seeing a colussal(sp)secure container at EVE-I just before Exodus.. is that just a pipe dreams or were there plans for a can that large (held 11,000 and was 6000 in size)

Originally by: Cuisinart I feel your pain, but I feel compelled to point out that the ore thief problem has been around pretty much forever (in eve time) and the Devs have done nothing substantial to mitigate it. I doubt they will...
Didn't they set it up so you would get an enemy flag or some crap and you could shoot on sight? Or did that get taken out with this wonderful 3007 patch?

Edited by: Bohr on 06/12/2004 19:46:26 Mining ice into secure cans is completely impossible. 3900m¦ holds 3 units of ice. Either we need larger secure cans, as proposed, or secure jetcans. The latter would actually be useful, while the former only puts the problem a few kms away, only to come back and hit you in the head like a boomerang.
Edit: Besides, secure cans totally ruin the cool graphics of the game. Take a trip through the belts in Nonni or Torrinos, and look at the literally hundreds of cans per belt cluttering the otherwise pretty sight. Makes it impossible to click anything and cause unnescessary lag.
Please do something to fix this now CCP!

The usual crock of balls from the usual suspects. Jet-can mining was an invention of the Eve community, as were the large alliances (it's all pretty well documented already) and any other ideas the devs have picked up from us all over the last few years. Just because it hasn't been officially incorperated into the game, doesn't mean it shouldn't or will never be.
Criminal flagging should sort this problem out. Presumably, the macro miners will be too busy managing their e-bay accounts to actually chase down an ore thief. The rest of us, however, would find it a fun thing to do.

For most MMO companies, greifing is not an acceptable form of gameplay, resource collection is however... ------------------------------------------------ "for piece sakes!" |

Problem with secure cans being transportable and huge is players will use them as they are now for getting that little bit extra in yer hold. There is a simple solution to this:
Make cans hold more (like 20000m3) and 3000m3 in mass but make them so they cannot be transported with anything inside them. ___________________________________________ http://www.eve-tutor.com

Then go play those MMOGs, EVE is not your typical carebearish, risk free game. Remember, EVE is open-ended and promotes thinking and strategy, coming up with new things. Jet can mining wass one. So was ore "theft". They are complements to each other, yin and yang, good and evil. It adds CHALLENGE and COMPROMISE to the game. One such compromise was the implementation of secure cans. "But, but, they can't hold as much, I want a bigger can." That is the compromise! You can do it securely, but at a bit more EFFORT, or unsecurely and you are at risk. That is what a GAME is all about! Providing you with challenge and risk! Would you prefer to just sit there, dumbfounded and watch a progress bar go up?
Use mining barges if it is suck a hassle then. They are just haulers with awesome mining lasers. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

step 3: Just modifiy Indy code so we can sport a password on our cargo holds and those that know the code, can drop and take items from said cargo hold. (did someone say "pilotable cargo cans?")
Hauler pulls up and parks next to me, I right click on Indy and enter code, mine and fill till full. Off he goes. Lather, rinse and repeat.
