Edited by: El***ER on 07/12/2004 23:04:02 tryed eve build 2942 on linux with cedega 4.1 demo about a week ago
Eve seemed to work and perform well - cursor was broken/invisible in windowed mode - switching from windowed to fullscreen caused eve to end (after eve restart the fullscreen mode was ok - even mouse pointer was working as intended) - character selection screen showed "you have been in corp for 409 years and ..." - wh000t - fps where very good/no graphic issues so far - undocking/docking/jumping worked - sound worked
waiting for a suitable payment option at transgaming :(
test was performed on gentoo linux - 64bit with 32bit libs installed amd64 3500+/1gb ram/gf6800 (thx to nv for 64bit drivers)/nfs root with copy of my windows eve/xorg and kde 3.3
winex/cedega cvs seam to be unable to work with Eve (see this page for possible details)

Just use lilo
(lilo or grub or some other program for it is basically always included in the distro)
better use grub if you have the choice

Edited by: Fiberton on 08/12/2004 02:58:04 Edited by: Fiberton on 08/12/2004 02:44:49 I rather try it on FreeBSD. Noticed that DirectX 9c was ported by MSFT for FreeBSD. Makes me wonder what is up MSFT sleeve. FreeBSD > linux in my personal opinion, although I will not start a os war.

Please don't start any Linux vs. BSD flamewars. Don't think the servers could handle it, especially if they're running FreeBSD.

Edited by: Kaylona Tso on 08/12/2004 17:59:57 Ok good news bad news report Number 1:
My System :
AMD Athlong 64 3000+ ASRock SiS755 based mobo 1gig Corsair TwinX Cas2 DDR400 eVGA 6800 80gig WD 8mb Cache 7200RPM HD Toshiba DVD Player NEC DVD+R/RW
OK this is how installation went :
Mandrake 10.1 Official PowerPack Edition Installed with VESA drivers for video
You must install the kernel sources at OS installation time to install the Nvidia 6629 drivers
You must, before installing Nvidia drivers, RE-INSTALL using RPMDRAKE or the command line the Kernel SOURCE RPM... without this the Nvidia drivers will fail. This IS a documented error on the net for mandrake 10 and 10.1.
Once you do that you can then run the Nvidia setup as stated on their website, which includes running the script and editing the XF86Config.conf in the /etc/X11 directory. Note that Mandrake 10.1 uses X.org's version of Xfree86 however the xorg.conf is just a symbolic link to the XF86Config.conf in the same directory.
After this you must type as root modprobe nvidia to insert the new kernel interface into the kernel.
Download all the RPMs from transgaming.com for Cedega 4.2
RPM install Codega first, Point2Play second, MozCTL second ( this is a version of firefox that will be used when a browser is called from a game ) and then the fonts ( which may need to be installed after your games )
EVE ONLINE installed PERFECTLY. I installed off the CD I bought over a year ago. Gemini 934 IS NOT SUPPORTED or runs on my system. I then downloaded the 934 - 3007 patch and it installed PERFECTLY. I can get the main screen working and everything looks fine. I log in fine. I get to the Character selection and I get a CTD. I am going to try some manual options to pass to the game, such as making it think its Windows 2000 instead of 98. I think its a matter of some switches to get it to run.
To give you a heads up on performance I downloaded the steam client and installed it. It Installed Perfectly and the active x firefox you get with Codega works near flawlessly so you can see html pages just as you would in windows. I updated the steam client with Counter-Strike Source and went to find a pub. Ping was same as windows, fps was near same. I had an occasional stutter but 95% of the time I couldn't really tell the difference what OS was under me.

Kaylona: if you copy the cache folder from an existing eve install that works the game will not die on generating your pictures when you login it seems
I can get in game and do stuff

@Devs: Are you working to get Eve running on Linux or is it just nice to see? (do you work with Transgaming? did they gave you some docs?)
Do you wish to get bug reports/log server files? (maybe a Linux Forum under "EVE Technology and Research Center") How many devs are involved with Eve on Linux?

I really don't think the devs care about Eve on Linux. They're swamped with support problems now, let alone if they had to support an operating system like Linux.
I mean yeah, it's a great OS but supporting it is pure hell because all the distros do things slightly differently, and all the configuration is really up to the user.

Would like to point out for the problem with the cursor not being drawn in windowed mode, that a eve player wrote this handy tool that draws a crosshair where the cursor is.
