Edited by: Verrenici on 06/07/2010 16:55:23 They're going to force you to display your real name when posting on forums.
Thoughts on this? I have mixed feelings. On one hand the decline in trolls will be amazing, on the other full name disclosure might be somewhat excessive. I would have elected to display full first name, and first letter of one's last name.

Doesn't that negate the whole purpose of it? If that were the case you'd basically be anonymous anyway.
The solution here is not to post on a Blizzard forum.

And? Fake names ftw? Unless they display the credit card holder's name(Which would be incredibly ****ing ******ed) then there is no way to prevent forum trollz. I'd still troll the **** out of them. You can't actually change your name, unless you get a legal name change and send a copy of your passport to Blizzard.

It'd be epic to see all of the crushed feelings of WoW-junkies when they see that the female avatar they've been "dating" in WoW is really named Barry Milton, a trekkie who lives in his mother's basement that traded out his poster of Marina Sirtis for a photoshopped image of Jonathan Frakes with a muscleman's body years ago. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

Notrly, it's the poster's choice to post knowing their name will be displayed.
If anything it will kill their boards (which isn't a bad thing).
I can't wait to see the hilarity of the realization that some d00d is dating an internet transvestite virtually lol.

Not unless there is an opt out option.
Alot of forums allow users to view details about people posting, and alot of them do show real name unless you specifically choose to hide this information.
I think it's great when people stand behind what they say, and not try to hide behind some alias afraid that their opinions will somehow be linked back to them.

What?
It's your name dude. Not your credit-card number, not the size of your schlong not your social security number, just your name. It's on the front of your house, it's on every letter you get, it's on your facebook page.

There are problems with giving out even just your real name on the internet. The amount of stupidity that comes with the internet is monumental, just look at the 4chan people and like websites...all it does is invite r/l harassment, which can be quite difficult to stop...law enforcement isn't exactly jumping at the chance to help people out when they're being stalked/harassed.
But, there will be no legal consequence to Bliz for enacting the policy as long as they plainly state what they are doing.

I don't see why. If I act like a gigantic tool in real life, I run the risk of getting harassed and/or getting my face kicked in. That doesn't stop me going outside, it stops me being a tool.

That's not the point, the point I'm making is people will go out of their way to **** with you whether or not you are being a tool on the internet for the lulz.
Let me give you an example...There is a website called EQ2Flames, it's where all the forum posters that we banned from the SOE forums went to ***** about us...many of us were quite visible publicly on our play accounts in the community and when our identities were unveiled on that website, many of us got harassed in real life just because we were forum moderators for SOE.
Trust me, it's a bad idea all around.

Nope. As long as they don't make it retroactive. What it will do is be a part of their EULA; if you ever read those, you realize you often sign over your immortal soul in the process of installing software. They'll just put in a renewed clause everyone has to check (common with a BLIZZ patch already), which signs over all liability and acknowledges that by posting in the forums you're identifying yourself, and wash their hands of it. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

There are plenty of people who would **** with you just for ****s and giggles. Also, these are BlizzKids, and they get ****ed off about everything. All it would take is a little searching to find a character owner's real name and location, add a little pvp grudge, and you've got RL harassment and violence on your hands.
EDIT: I would like to see this happen to the WoW forums, just for ****s and giggles, but I'll keep my real name relatively private, tyvm.

Speaking of moves against forum trolls, is it possible for CCP to give you another forum ban while you're already banned? Just, you know, out of innocent nubish curiosty, because I am definitely not an alt. This is soooo not Zions Child's Alt because he sooooo did not get a ban for soooooo not trolling one of Ekrid's sooo not a troll post.

SHHHHHHHH! I'M DEFINITELY NOT AN ALT!
Also, If I were to have been banned for trolling a thread, it would've been this one Linkage
Alas, the post that was not me trolling it was deleted, and it didn't make it to EVE-Search. Also, Realize, I did not troll that post, as I am certainly not an alt.

Seeing as how I've received RL death threats over my posting on the Eve forums, I'd have to say I'm not a fan of such a move. You don't have to be a troll to have people **** with your RL (even if they aren't necessarily trying to kill you/destroy your life).

Well despite me being wrong, this is still a bad idea. Knowing a persons real name is enough to stalk them. Ok I mean a girl plays wow and posts on the forums, when her name is shown how long will it be before 1358901353 guys add her to their facebooks or she starts getting random calls.
But also with above statements - yes the power of 4chan harassing people just by knowing their names is amazing.
TL;DR - its a bad idea and is going to cause more problems than it will fix.

exactly
all they are doing is kicking themselves in the nuts here.
Eve-o forums are good for ccp because it gives them a place to disseminate information / players to gather information. In addition to that, people discuss the game in an environment where, when neccesary, CCP can correct or moderate bad information.
If ccp made us all use our real names + main char, everyone would go post on shc or whatever... in the end all we (players) lose is knowing 100% good information from shady information (which people are usually able to ferret out for themselves eventually).
CCP however would lose any and all control over the medium. No more locking threads until they've had time to deal with issues, no more clarification or what have you.
But Blizzard is packed full of overpaid overdressed morons who do their absolute best to **** off players. This is just another example of that.
-- A game that is significantly nonlinear is sometimes described as being open-ended or a sandbox, and is characterized by there being no "right way" of playing the game. |
