OMGWTFBBQFISHSTICKSWHERESTHESTICKY?????
Kaaii, awesome post! I began this way, actually trading tritanium a year ago, when I could buy for .5 and sell at 1.2 some jumps away. When I got the the point of overflowing my poor indy's cargo hold, I moved on to pyerite and then to mexallon. Beyond that, it wasn't profitable, except for the one time I caught someone buying Iso at 6700, instead of 67. I filled the order, and he mailed me and congratulated me on getting the offer, since he realized his mistake.
Now, with NPC Hunting growing old, and mining being done on another account, I'm thinking perhaps I should get back into trading, and this article, I think, has provided the incentive that I need. ________________________________ Therian Dreamscape Chief Financial Officer Director of Manufacturing and Sales |

Totally agree with the everyone on this - superb guide Kaaii. About time someone showed that trading can be lucrative, particularly now that you can access the market in space and with the addition of the new trade skills.
A sticky on the front page would be nice though; please CCP?

Don't forget market opportunities like buying Station Vaults at 9k where there are reprocessing facilities . Escrow has generally a lot of good deals to offer but also a lot of scammers are there so beware.

This is a VERY nice read. Especially now that I was about to make a Trader-character.
I take it Charisma and Willpower are the most usefull attributes when choosing a race, right? I did not read anything about the attributes in your otherwise excellent explanation.
And part 102? Bring it on! Signatures are for the wicked |

ahhh...they're the least useful attributes, actually. Trading is sort of secondary to important stuff like "spaceship command" and "gallente industrial lvl5" ...you'll notice the skill training time is lessened the more attributes you have, and that having high charisma/willpower is useless if the trade skills are few and low ranked.
The vast majority of high ranked skills are located under gunnery and spaceship command. The other vast majority are located in more analytic/memory class skills.
When making a starter character i'd recommend this approach: CAPTAINCY CAREER ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

I would be very grateful for a trading 102. I think I have 1010 down and I'm looking to get more advanced!

Trading 102?? Where do I sign up?
Also, how relevant is this since we are now Exodus?
Has anyone considered creating a Trader Channel (NOT Trade) for things like checking prices around the universe?

Nice guide.
Extra tip: Don't sell partial NPC buy orders
*Station has demand for 100.000 items at 20 isk (a good sell price). *You arrive in your industrial, holding maybe 20.000 items.
DO NOT SELL IT, go back and come with next batch.
Reason being that once you sell it the odds of the price going down are considerably more than the price going up.
So 100.000 items wanted. You sell 20.000
Instead of buy order now changed to 80.000 for same price, there is suddenly a new buy order for 100.000 items at 15 isk (very low profit).

yes, that's true. i've found that selling Two batches i'll see a price jump outside my profit range.
- SAy i'm selling Slaves and the buy order is 1600 units. I have 3200 in my ubercargo ship, and see the price at another station will give me 100 isk profit per m3.
i run over and try to sell all my slaves, but the station only wants half. so i sell one batch, and sell the next. suddenly, BOOM, the price rockets up to only 25 isk profit per m3...maybe less
- OR, let's take the opposite approach. say i have only room for 800 slaves in my cargo hold. the same station will buy my first load, and i do another trip and sell 800 more. BOOM, the price rises. (now, you'd think it wouldn't do that unless i sold four cargo holds of 800 slaves each, but it don't work that way)
Basically, for stuff that has a huuuuuuuuuuge volume buy/sell order i try to get corp mates to pool our resources so only one person buys/sells the stuff and we split the cargo/profit amongst ourselves for the haulage. ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

I just got hit by a typical example.
A product is in demand for over 40.000 units at almost it's peak price (15-20% margin).
While I was stocking up for the 40.000+ units that the entire sell order can get you, someone sold 20.000 units and the price dropped to 2% profit margin.
Now I can either continue stocking up in that station and wait for prices to fluctuate again (of course taking the chance that next time they reach good margin, someone else sells 100 units and breaks it all) or find another station with a similar profit margin.
Think about this the next time, doing that one extra run to get full load just might make you score bigtime instead of half.

Bump this thing back to the top until it gets a sticky.

Ok folks..
Ive begun work on a more involved guide, Tradeing 102.
I plan to include-
Advanced strageties Equipment tips some in depth examples of "a good route", or two. A market discussion, (NPC).
Wrapped (again) in a storyline theme..
Is there anything, the community would like to see as well?
If so pls post suggestions and I will try to incorperate it in the guide.
thx again, to all that have used the guide, and provided comments, that I wasn't "too" far off on my trade thoughts...

I think nerfing the highways will help trade. Its too easy to make inter-region trades right now. Making these routes longer and a little dangerous will reward those who are willing to attempt them.

Edited by: Sarmaul on 27/02/2005 01:17:14 firstly, just bumping to make sure this doesn't go off the first page (STICKY!!!!!)
Now, I only started trading a few days ago (arms mainly) but I have already found a very useful technique. If I enter a station and someone is selling items at a stupidly low price (and the rest of the items are high), I just buy the entire lot there and sell them in the same station for just under the next highest.
No hauling involved and it seems to work . Also, if I'm running agent missions I can check the market and make some money while fighting npcs in my rifter.
But seriously though, very good article. I know it's going to take a lot of work to get to the stage I want to be at, and it's nice to know that some traders are willing to share tips, if not specific routes .
EDIT: nothing important

Perhaps including some more underhanded and risky trading strategies like price fixing and such.
Oh, and I humbly request a sticky like so many others have. I can't count how many times I've seen this post referenced in other help threads.
