"We have one team (at this point) assigned to EVE Gate development and iteration, and that wonæt change for the foreseeable future. Note that this team is a dedicated Web development team. I had planned on using them to fix fleet lag but was talked out of it."
Quote from the latest devblog. I must say, that this is one of the saddest things I have read in a devblog in ages. Instead of doing a serious attempt at fixing lag, you spend lots of resources to develop a gimmicky spacebook thingy that has zero use whatsoever for any organization big enough to have their own forums.

OP reveals astounding new truth: Web designers are apparently able to surpass any other occupational discipline in coding for a complex MMORPG.

Joke or no joke - it still shows that CCP rather use resources on developing new stuff, that is more or less worthless, like PI and EVE GATE, than fixing serious issues that has been haunting the game for ages.

Edited by: Sig Sour on 16/07/2010 19:04:49 I would not want to work on the lag issue either. If the team is talking him into web development over working on optimizing the lag, the situation must be real bad, because web development is like the toilet scrubbing of computers.

That was, as other posters have pointed out, a joke.
Web developers generally do not possess the proper skill set to be able to determine, debug, and fix server-side code for MMOs. They do, however, have the proper skill sets to work on Web sites and Web-based features.

You should fire those web developers and hire someone with the skills needed to do work with the parts of the game that needs work, not gimmicks of dubious value. -------------------------- Insert signature. |

Considering the state of quite a few web sites out there, and the confusion caused when we moved out of the "screw standards, we have IE" quagmireà
àI wouldn't even go that far, in most cases.

I don't knowà getting a proper UI foundation to the data set that will eventually tie all of New Eden together doesn't quite seem like a "gimmick of dubious value", especially considering the complaints we tend to see about the rest of the UI. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I'd stick to hotdropping cap fleets on ratters if I was you mate. This whole thinking thing seems to be a bit too taxing.

I hear that throwing more people at the problem is simple and will always result in getting the problem fixed faster. I'm pretty sure that if CCP only hired twice as many developers, expansions would roll out in half the time, c/d?

It was a joke in exceptionally poor taste considering what is happening with the fleet fight lag, Nathan's comments in the CSM minutes (which may or may not have been taken out of context) and so on and so forth.

I'm sorry CCP your game is full of idiots.
I thought joke was hilarious... and the OP reaction... so ironic.
OP demands you task all your writers, artists, and web developers on debugging. GO CCP go!!!

It was a joke. I got it immediately upon reading it. I even got reprimanded for laughing out loud at my desk at work. It's unfortunate to see how many idiots play this game.
That said, however:
Did anyone else sense an inherent "MUST BACKPEDDLE! FASTER, DAMN YOU, FASTER!" feel to whole post? It's not a strong feeling, just a little fleck of "Oh god, what have we done".

I demand that the receptionists and night shift janitors be placed on the fix-the-lags dev team until further notice. How hard can it be?
Edit: And that goes for the cook too.

If you can't have a sense of humour about internet spaceships... you must be really boring. If anything it shows how aware they are of the issue.

Can't be arsed to find the quote but the plan is that you should be able to do almost everything you can do ingame from the EveGate site. Like selling and buying, changing skills in training, make and accept contracts. Mail and the calendar is just the first step.

Today is a bad day to be on that Web Dev team. Butt of a joke by your boss. Told your work is not wanted by the players. Told you don't have the skills to do what the players want by your co-workers, in turn the players request to have you terminated and replaced.
