Update: looks like everything is up and we are monitoring for any more issues. Oh my looks like I may of jumped the gun on this. I'm sorry if I gave any false hope. Still having issues and we are working on it.

No problem. We will just go play your competitors MMO while you fix your database issues. These database issues are becoming normal. We are playing League of Legends, and World of Tanks more because of it. Keep up the good work at becoming our 2nd favorite game to play.

I think handing out more skillpoints would be a fantastic idea.
On a serious note though, while I do think that the idea of reimbursing people with skillpoints is a reasonable solution to extended server downtimes, I hope it doesn't become a common practice and is reserved for unusual and exceptional cases.
Also, hope the server gets going again soon!

I suggest you find an engineer who can 'fix' this issue on a more permant basis than a 7 day one, but of course, dont let a muppet like me tell a well established firm like you how to run their business.

"Engineers", there is that term again. I am a "so called" software engineer but I unlike the rest of them accept the fact that real engineers retired out of IT long ago and now it is just hack after acceptable hack after acceptable hack.

I can't log in. I posted elsewhere, but maybe it'll be seen here first.
This recent outage (or whatever it was) occurred right as I jumped into a wormhole. I got "Jumping into a system in unknown space" at the bottom of the screen, and my ship disappeared with the normal animation, but the new system did not load. Shortly afterwards, I got "Traffic control will let you through to J123456 in 2 minutes 42 seconds" (or whatever) in a little black box. After waiting out that timer, trying to press jump again gave me "You are affected by a polarity charge, you have to wait 2 minutes 17 seconds." Waiting out that timer and pressing jump again gave "Raven has already jumped as of 5M ago" (lol, mutiny?) Then the game finally kicked me out.
10 minutes later, I'm now trying to log in. I get to "Entering game as Daesis Wrack" and the progress bar fills, then stops. After a few minutes staring at the black screen, I get kicked back out to character selection.
So I'm stuck in hyperspace, half in a wormhole and half out. I'd file a petition, but, you know, you have to be in the game to do that.

For the most part I can't login (stuck at authenticating) and if I'm lucky enough to get to character selection it's stuck on "entering EVE online". Doesn't seem like "everything" is back up!

It is not up. In fact it is the exact opposite of up right now. I'm stuck in a cycle of Character selection and black screen.

If I try logging in with the default shortcut, I time out at authenticating
If I append /server:87.237.38.200 (IP for TQ, not Sisi), I can get into the character screen but I can't actually get in game, keeps telling me the system is not loaded.

After reading "up and monitoring here" Tried loggin in.
Got "Your character is located within Jeras, which is currently stuck. Please select a different character or try later." for Eclorc and then second attempt on both my accounts just got stuck on authenticating. Had hit emergency-dock for both of us, another friend too, before server went down, hope it did as it was told :S p.s. 3 drones of 5 actually returned just before server died, and it said the others no longer existed?
Server is not "up" for us here :(

While I'm thought to be a fanboy by most people I guess, it's pretty unexplainable to have database issues that return every other day or so.
Could we get an explanation on what is causing this, time and time again ? It seems to me that either the client is FUBAR, your queries are, or you hit a MS bug .. ?
Could we get a little more in-debt explanation then 'index corrupt' or something obvious like that ? I mean, the first time I didn't care, **** happens. Second time was like; meh.
3rd, 4th, 5th; MEH!
Right now I'm starting to wonder if the so called vocal minority has a point burried under the rage.
I am not trying to spawn the unseless hate and OMFG you suxor CCP responses here, but daim, either fix it, or explain why it is repeating over and over again, and for how long we can expect this. Preferably, add the cause.

May I bring an idea your attention:
When the server have issue's for whatever reason it quite often seems to happen that the forums go offline as well.
Hence CCP looses the possibility to communicate to its customers on the issue at hand.
A simple solution maybe:
put one server with a simple setup and loads of bandwith in a complete separate data center from the production game servers.
Install something simple like a WordPress blog on it.
And use that one to communicate server/network/db etc etc issues to the customer base.
By using a setup like this, you will be able to communicate to the customers about the issue at hand. And it will not depend on these forums to be online, your data center to be alive or what ever.
as domain maybe something like eve-status.com ?
For me that would help to keep frustration under control. Communication is key when things go wrong.

Really, the problem with software today is that it's "acceptable" and "accepted" and "expected" to be unstable and buggy and crash. I know because that is what is expected of us (Im a software engineer too at a very BIG cash cow "platform" house no names but enuf hints). Unfortunately this is a fact of corporate life, instability is expected and accepted. Yet on the other hand we expect to be treated like "structural engineers" that "build bridges" and so on and all that bullshat when infact we are nothing like them and wont ever be in the next decade (or the past decade too). Real engineers retired long ago in the 60s, 70s, 80s. It died in the 90s and definately the 00's.
The core problem isnt the fact that it does just that, the core problem is a social problem, acceptance that we ship low quality shat.
We can role play and pretend to be "engineers" when in fact we are nothing close to it. Myself included. We are just hacks.
Flame me all you want, You know deep down I am right.
Spare me the presentations on "design patterns". While it sounds cool and all that crap, overengineering, we love to **** with shat. That is the problem. Tinker here tinkere there, oh yeah thats fragile but hey it works, until it doesnt.
Hack hack hack hack. I am too. I hate it, I left that job a long time ago, I now run a company and yeah I tell my little wonder "engineers" dont bullshat me: I know waht reality is. They know the score.

Enough with the whining. Do you people really believe they just don't feel like fixing it? I had 3 hours to play today before I have to go help the in-laws move stuff from storage, yay me, and I'm not complaining, so pipe down. This isn't like some consumer database at even a very large company. This is a one off engine with a one off database, and it's hammered by every single person logged in. These games are ambitious efforts into uncharted territory. EVE, with the single instance server model does stuff no other MMO is doing, so you can't even compare it to the mega machine that is Blizzard, they wouldn't know how to deal with 50k users hitting the same database either.
So just chill out, it sucks, but I am pretty sure you'll live. Show a little respect, and a littler understanding, they want this fixed as bad as you and I.

Let me take a stab at that:
Back then, it was easy to use MS, as the common monkeys where used to it. Now, they are stuck with it, or they'll have to actualy hire DBA's that know what a proper database is, and know how to convert the current heap-o-crap to something that one could call a database again.
In no way did I just try to insult CCP or make them look bad, altho if you could point me at the monkey that caused CCP to use MS, I'd gladly alter my post.

dust will fail anyways as there are too many non subscription based fps's out there

That's how it is with online games, the single biggest weak spot with any MmO is its database, i've played upwards of 20 diferent MmO's over the years and the single thing they have in common is crashes caused by database issues, it happens, all we can do is wait for the servers to return.

He actualy spends more time thinking about the consequences of his work. I work in HFT (High Frequency Trading) his "ego" can cost the company MILLIONS in a day.

You know what might actually be a good idea?
Take TQ offline for a week. And have every developer actually spend time fixing what appears to be serious underlying issues with its stability and then allowing everyone back on (with a largeish pool of skill points as compensation!) after it's fixed!
And yes, I'm a bit annoyed. First time I get to play in two weeks and I get an hours play in before it dies!

While you're fixing the DB issues, could you mark on the next expansion's calendar a proper QUEUE?!?!?!?!?
I mean really! The crashes are a big enough issue only to be compounded with a queue that has no function and follows no logic. "You're #416 in queue" Followed by a second client that starts just mere seconds to be #25 in queue. Then finally being told status: ok to be told you're #125 in queue......seriously, for the love of God!

i try to avoid replying to these threads but seriously, someone made a good point earlier on - the new shineys are all well and good, but when the basics keep screwing up, the expansions become kinda pointless
i really would rather see an expansion focused on just stability issues, and bugger all the nice new stuff, just a game that's generally on 23/7 would do me down to the ground

um, the queue is based on what proxy server you connect to. thus, one proxy might have a 50 player queue, whilst another has no queue.
it works perfectly, just you are being load-balanced and every server you connect to has a different queue, thus you get diferent numbers =p
honestly, just restart and you usually get no wait

When this happened earlier in the week I remember someone stating the database problems were forming a pattern. Every 5 - 6 days.
Well here we are 5 days later with database issues.

I've always admired CCP, I have been a member since 2007. throughout my membership CCP servers die constantly and nobody explains anything and the staff keep saying stupid silly immature comments.
People have taken the day off work, or swapped shifts just because they planned to play Eve. Now we are sitting doing nothing, thanks, I could have been working and making money in real life.

People have taken the day off work, or swapped shifts just because they planned to play Eve. Now we are sitting doing nothing, thanks, I could have been working and making money in real life.

Why does the Eve client never work out on it's own I'm disconnected? I don't enjoy suddenly realising I've been mining the same asteroid for five minutes and got zero ore. I mean how hard is it to code it a network test and timeout?

Ok well if someone has already touched on this, i apologize for being redundant...
During the extended downtime last time, I was forewarned and as such prepared for that downtime, I allso understand the technical nature of things as I too work in the computer industry, but this time, I'm stuck with 2 characters who now have empty training queues and I cannot get into the game to refill the queue...
we are several hours now into this issue, so my question is, "is this going to be addressed again?"

Yes it does. But CCP seems to have failed to create system stability in lieu of the many outages we have had recently. CCP is getting very good at outages ... allowing them to happen, I mean, not fixing them...

Ya, in naval aviation we call this a "phase inspection." Its based on flight hours on the aircraft.
Lets say after every 10000 hours, Eve goes down for a week to get cleaned up, bad parts replaced, QA inspected, FCF'd, and opened back up for business. I dont think there is anyone posting here that would say this is a bad idea.

I guess my complaint at this point is simple. Didn't we just have less than 2months ago a MAJOR shift of databases, servers and repair.
So why is there yet another problem with servers???
I am wondering how long this issue will take to resolve but alas they have no idea... tsk tsk tsk time to play another game instead and consider not renewing the next time around ;(

nice- a random 1 hr downtime- i do like this game though but i personally think ccp need to dedicate more staff to look after the servers, fix some of the lag and other issues- push dust and incarnia back a few months or something
though on the plus side the 1 hr daily down time is actually really short- only 20 mins sometimes- maybe you guys need to do more work during the daily downtime

As a noob to EVE I'm fairly disappointed in the performance of the game in terms of uptime. Besides the daily hour of downtime, I've experienced at least three different episodes of unexpected downtime. I wonder if CCP's insistence on not using shards but rather a single system image is the root of the problem: a single persistent game world is fun, but with 250K+ users, it's a recipe for lag, database corruption, and network latency issues. And I'm not convinced a single persistent "world" is even necessary for about 95% of what people do in EVE. A "near time" message-passing architecture between shards would surely be good enough to preserve the illusion of a seamless world, wouldn't it?
And finally: there is no commercial database software that is free of problems. Sybase, Oracle, SQL Server, even IBM's mainframe DB2 software -- I've worked on them all, and they all have problems of varying kinds. The problem is one of architecture and design, not (simply) of database performance. EVE is suffering from some pretty classic scaling issues, which generally have one of two solutions: refactor the software to be more efficient (expensive), or throw more hardware at the problem to increase throughput (also expensive). Refactoring is the better but harder solution (and the more time-consuming); the hardware solution is the easiest and fastest, though if done badly it can only exacerbate the problem.
I'm getting the distinct feeling that CCP has simply stretched itself too thin, and has neglected some pretty fundamental aspects of the Eve infrastructure.

Never thought I'd say this: If you know databases even a little, you'd know how hard it is to **** one, if they are designed right.
Their first mistake was using a MS DB, the second is running it on a MS server, the third seems to be that they have MSDBA certified lusers, instead of real DBA's.
A DB is nothing more then a very advanced storage cabinet with nice labels. If you **** that up, you ****ed up your administration.
The ONLY exception is MS bugs causing this.
(presuming the DBA's have to review all code that is being executed that queries the DB in any way)

Dude its STILL ALWAYS better then world of warcraft.
When I played wow the server would randomly **** itself and would be down for days and blizzard would never even mention it and at no point would they say why something happend or when it would be fixed.
The frequency with which the eve servers have problems is at least 1/20th the frequency by which wow servers had problems.
So be happy.

If they actually spent an hour during the normal downtime to check for possible problems that could happen throughout the day this might not happen. Server usually comes up within 10-30 mins instead of Hour it's supposed to go down for each day. What do they even do during the scheduled downtimes?

I've always admired CCP, I have been a member since 2007. throughout my membership CCP servers die constantly and nobody explains anything and the staff keep saying stupid silly immature comments.
People have taken the day off work, or swapped shifts just because they planned to play Eve. Now we are sitting doing nothing, thanks, I could have been working and making money in real life.
Some people are thick. If they were Omniscient god-things that knew everything, the server wouldnt be down, now would it? Try to think before you speak, which is especially easy considering you're actually typing.
If they didnt respond to any posts, people would QQ about CCP ignoring their all-important forum trolls. If you want CCPs response to the server issues, read the OP and STFU.
Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. Please eat your own words as you don't have a clue what I was talking about.
The route/path I was going down, was; CCP should have an update page...that is actually updated. It would give us all news and information about the recent server down time.
Too many people in here are too quick to attack people without even considering to understand what that person has said.
Either that, or all these trolls are employed by CCP to annoy people like me who just want an answer. Disinformation tactics, so lame.

Whoever is in charge of telling you guys what priorities you need to focus on needs to be fired. this use to be a good game WTF happened? Hardly anything works. The lag is terrible. "Features" dont work. Their are all kinds of MAJOR bugs.
FFS we cant even defend/take systems in 0.0 because of lag and improperly working game mechanics. Most of us cant be bothered to do anything other than station spin or occasionally carebear because of all the BS. You can only fight with more than 5 v 5 in systems that are on a reinforced node. otherwise who got their first wins by default since the others have to wait 10 minutes for the grid to load.
Yet despite all of this and players making dozens of threads about it. CCPs focus is on DUST and new features. Well let me school you a bit:
1)Dust requires the Eve Universe. Apparently Dust also requires interactions with players in EVE for transport and such between planets. Eve players are getting extremely aggravated throwing money at CCP and not getting things THEY CARE ABOUT fixed.No Eve players= NO functional Dust.
2)We are pod pilots. we dont give a rats arse about full body avatars and going to the mall in the local station. We care about pew pew, mining, and other stuff IN SPACE. Eve is a SPACE GAME. If we wanted to play a game where we walk around and what not we would play a NON SPACE GAME.
3)WE dont care about new features and we definately dont give a rats arse about Dust. What we do care about is we are pumping $15 a month per account into this game and you cant fix the basic features. Our money is being used to develop Dust. But we have to play with broken crap and massive lag spikes. And deal with petitions that take 6 months to answer.

Eve use to be a good game, The support use to be brilliant but every since you guys got on this stupid Dust game our customer service has greatly dwindled. The game has become buggier to the point of not really worth logging in and the xpacks less and less thrilling.

im sorta starting to notice that there always something up with the database, startups failing, weekends usualy eve gets laggy and these type of situations happen alot that the grid just fails under weekends loads
i understand that these are complex issues, and the problem being burried in a pile of code of the past years.
CCP prolly will have a notification system tobe informed about problems, but what the holdup with a decent MOTD? , So we can stop trying to login like a mad rabit foxes trying to get our eve kicks. serously. what the cost of a writing a motd like "sorry guys server is goofing, where looking in to it."
it would cost me alot less frustration.

Dude its STILL ALWAYS better then world of warcraft.
When I played wow the server would randomly **** itself and would be down for days and blizzard would never even mention it and at no point would they say why something happend or when it would be fixed.
The frequency with which the eve servers have problems is at least 1/20th the frequency by which wow servers had problems.
So be happy.
If WoW crashes you don't stand a chance to get killed and loss things - permanently.

though on the plus side the 1 hr daily down time is actually really short- only 20 mins sometimes- maybe you guys need to do more work during the daily downtime

This is exactly the problem with software "engineering" today. Read my updaed post. I hold my employee's "Engineers" ACCOUNTABLE. I get much higher quality deliverables now. No egos, just quality work, if they **** up, they end up accountable. "It happens" yes, I had one engineer say that to me. He learnt his lesson. The quality of his work is now impeckable. He actualy spends more time thinking about the consequences of his work. I work in HFT (High Frequency Trading) his "ego" can cost the company MILLIONS in a day.
You must live in some fantasy land where deadlines don't push quality to the side.
That's right because I have been running our business so wrong the past 15 years that you can just come out of your mothers womb and tell me how to do it right. My god I am glad you are here because all these years I have been doing it so wrong and bad. Well thank goodness you are here to save the day with your ego.

I'm beginning to think they can't fix Eve. Eve will depend on DUST. Eve will require DUST interactions.
You start looking at it this way and assume when DUST comes along Eve goes by the wayside and why these problems have existed since the beginning and nothing ever gets fixed starts to make perfect sense.

Oh my god, I cant believe this **** :D. I actually read all the pages and cant believe all the whining that is going on. Seriously people now please try using your brains. Nothing related to computers is ever 100% stable. "It happens" is a fully truthful sentece about it. Now then when we start thinking about how complex eve is, the chances of problems just raise. How many other games there are running on the same size server swarm as eve is? I personally cant think of any game. The fact is that even if some other company created eve again or if eve was moved under some other company's development and administrating, there would still be random database issues or other problems. Hell there could actually be more problems.
I am personally not a coder but I work in an environment with many different kinds of systems and servers and even though every single of them is small compared to eve, they still have their problems sometimes.
Personally I enjoy playing eve and i can live with some random shutdowns as long as its not frequent (which it is not in eve, it is random). If some of you are so upset about it or just otherwise unhappy with the game, then WHY THE **** DO YOU STILL PLAY IT?
I dont believe in god but damn if I did, I'd pray every single evening and morning that he'd remove the stupidity from the internet :). Amen.

A database, essentially, is a huuuuge pile of information. In this case, EVE has databases covering who owns what, where it is, how many hit points it has, orbital velocities of unladen swallows, that sort of thing.
A database issue is when the afore-mentioned pile doesn't work properly. perhaps the pile has confused African and European Swallows, or decided that three people are in the same pod (buddy movie!). Or it's forgotten how to spell 'Jita'. There are so many things that can go wrong in a database of this magnitude and rate of use, it's a bloody miracle it works at all.

Starcraft II will be my replacement for this game. I am leaving now to purchase. I work all week and want to spend my saturdays doing what I love. CCP prevents this from happening time and time again. So, since they wont fix the issue, I will, by finding a new game to enjoy.

Dear ccp and staff, i would like to point out that your QA department is borked and should be fired and replaced with people that can actyally do that job.
Database issues cant creep throw QA process like this. What are those people doing? Sipping coffee and reading days newspaper probably since theyre not doing their job. Their job is to try to brake the damn code and see if problems arise.

thanks for getting this sorted within reasonable time, but i really think that CCP needs to start focusing on database issues - and this isn't emoraging, it's customer feedback
i think eve's a great game and i get it that an online game is going to go down now and again because of issues, but these problems are becoming more and more frequent, and please focus on sorting out these problems, rather than adding loads of different features that no-one would have missed were they not to have been introduced
stability before new stuff!

Yay the server is up!
But you know...I got on and found I had totally lost interest in playing eve today. I updated my skill queue and that was it.
Meh... Maybe tomorrow? I dunno I'm really apathetic about the whole thing now. CCP please consider fixing some of the stuff that really needs fixing. I honestly do want to keep playing.

Eve use to be top of the line as far as quality MMO. It has decreased in quality nad since they started on Dust, it has been quite rapid.
