Yes, they are doing a good job. You have to remember that NOT everybody in CCP can tackle lag issues. I mean what would happen if the graphical artists tried to fix the lag issues?! Yikes (of course they have a part to play in lag too). I do think they should take turns in beating the lag-guys/girls. Just to motivate them. Pain is always fun. Specially when it's others. Stop whining. |

An MMO that only keeps growing well past its launch is generally a sign the company is doing a good job.
As for the crybabies, whiners and haters.... well they are also doing a great job in griefing you *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

Obviously, they are doing a decent enough job overall, otherwise the game and forum would not exist. Obviously, they are not doing the best job, because it's practically impossible to always please everybody.
So, the answer to the question posted by the OP can AT BEST be either highly subjective or very shortsighted. In other words, worthless.
Change the title to "Do You Think CCP Has Made A Game That Is Still One Of The Best Around" and philosophers like that won't be able to pull that kind of crap on you.
To that topic I salute 07. If EVE sucked that badly none of us would still be playing it, or see a need to whine about it.

Yes EVE is generally one of the best games and certainly the best single MMORPG out there.

Made, as in IDEA, sure. Nothing will top EVE anytime soon in that respect.
But maintained? No, multiple years old bugs, lack of finished content, RMT laxness, exploits that stay for months, and our money going to console game development while eve wont be looked at for the next 18 months. They fail on that big time. Even The Sims has better reputation then EVE on content development.

I wonder how many of the chaps complaining have tried other MMORPGs?
I personally have experience of Eq1, Vanguard, GW, AoC, WAR and EQ2 and can safely say that even with the various issues EVE Online has it still blows them away and I maintain that CCP is the best company in the business when it comes to communication. They may not be right in the decisions they make any more than any other company but I can respect a company that publishes it's reasons behind making changes. |

I dont play any other MMO games because none of them have interested me, or seemed worth selling 1/10th of my liver a month to keep playing.
I took a gamble and tried EVE and it was good.

Other space MMOs ? Some of them will be failures, other won't ressemble EVE but sooner or later EVE online will have some real competition. It's success encouraged other development teams to go into space MMO bussiness and create some alternative.

Not necessarily. There are many fantasy mmorpgs that have tried to emulate the success of wow and have failed. Even though there is a constant stream of whines about how sucky wow has become. So it's really not that easy to make a successful mmo game. Especially in a kind-of-a niche genre like spaceship sandbox mmo. Will eve eventually be discontinued? Of course! Either because a worthy adversary has arrived or because CCP decide to go suicidal. But I doubt it would be in the next 3-4-5 years. And maybe even more.

Totally YES on the changed topic question I'll do you one better, even : CCP has managed to make THE BEST MMO that's (still) around (so far). It can still be improved though... a lot !

I personally have experience with Age of Conan, Dark Age of Camelot, Dofuc, Entropia, Everquest, Fallen Earth, Guild Wars, Jumpgate, Lineage, Lord of the Rings Online, Phantasy Star Universe, Planetside, Rubies of Eventide, Ryzom, Second Life, Star Wars Galaxies, Starquest Online, Ultima Online, Vogaye Century, Warhammer Online and World of Warcraft and can safely say that EVE Online is below average in polishing their game.
I must agree that they have above average communication, but that is not the issue here.
The issue is that they are no longer ( did they ever? ) polish their game, but rather add more incomplete features. A simple example ( to avoid talking about the lag ) is the sound system, it is beyond belief how it is possible to break the sound system of an mmorpg and only 1,5 years later it is fixed, to a degree where it is workable, but still alot worse than before ( positional sound implementation is really bad, but at least most bugs are fixed ).
Look at Ryzom, a sandbox that is alot more polished than EVE with only a fraction of the manpower.

Remember WoW did not appear out of thin air - there was entire Worldcraft game series before, that prepared playerbase for WoW. That way WoW could be compared more likely to ST:Online. Eve online will continue for long time but there are some games on the horizon, like Jumpgate Evolution or Black Prophecy that may take some subscribers from it sooner than in 3 years

Jumpgate evolution is still quite a long ways away. It may very well be sc****d altogether considering when it was supposed to be finished. Still it'll be a very different game from eve. It will be a twitch-based arcade shooter. I will of course play it because I enjoy such games as well. But I very much doubt most of eve's subscribers are so interested in twitch-based gameplay. If they were I would expect they'd have gone to Vendetta Online. Btw I've never heard about Black Prophecy. Will probably try it tough. Thanks for the heads-up However it still seems to be twitch-based so again the same point as with jumpgate.
Yes warcraft is a huge franchise. But as we saw with ST it doesn't guarantee success. What blizzard did with wow is what they do with all their other games - they copy a popular game's gameplay and make it better. Which is why it started being so successful. Now it's just a game everyone's playing because everyone's playing. Even though there are much better mmos out there.

Edited by: Sky Orcagna on 12/08/2010 18:21:23 EVE is a great game that is, unfortunately, far past its prime. It's kind of sad to watch EVE slowly devolve from one of the most innovative and dynamic PC games into the stagnant mess that it has become today. Like an old boxer or cage fighter that keeps fighting way past his prime, EVE still has a base of loyal fans and a lot of good memories. But it's also kind of sad to watch the current crop of EVE devs thrash around rather cluelessly, stubbornly defending all the great "improvements" and "expanded content" that has been haphazardly bolted on to EVE's archaic structure.
It didn't have to be this way. But CCP's truly inept long term planning and astonishing lack of understanding of how to design and polish has probably condemned EVE to a long, slow slide into irrelevancy.
Oh, EVE's subscription numbers still look pretty good, at least on paper. And there are still flashes of EVE's earlier brilliance here and there. But the game's core vision long ago morphed from something dark, violent and mysterious into something tired, stagnant, and utterly predictable.
Gamers thrive on challenge. They crave new and unpredictable experiences. They revel in competing against one another and in the thrill of being a part of something larger than themselves. Sadly, CCP only pays lip service to such concepts these days and seems to have completely forgotten how to actually deliver content that energizes and excites players.
CCP has succeeded in doing the impossible. They've managed to turn the boundless infinity of deep space into something about as exciting and unpredictable as the local Wal-Mart. What a shame. |
