We all know that the Cov Ops cloaker is best one and if you have the skills to use one of them that it don't pay to use either of the lesser two. My question is, however, about those 2 poorman's cloakers. I checked out the penaties of these, the scan resolution and such but most of all the speed limitations. Now, all those negative side effects, are they in place all the time? Or only when you have the module active?

When u activate the proto/advanced cloak your speed is vastly reduced and u can't really do anything. U cannot activate any other modules while it's on, and when u de-cloak, u need to wait 20-30 secs to target something or re-activate the cloak. They do have some uses i suppose, but tactically, they are pretty useless.
Best to keep on training and get the Covert-Ops cloak. Hope this helps

its not worth training the covert ops cloak either now tbh you used to be able to cloak on jump in.......now you have to turn off autopilot and move to decloak in order for you to then cloak again then warp you used to have a modicum of chance to avoid the ceptors but not anymore......as a sneeky blockade runner it is now not much use.......still very good for single system mooching about though

Damn it this is THE MOST frustrating module for me in the whole game. Theres are so many possiblities when it comes to cloaking but the penalties make them pretty much useless for anything but ... well pretty much anything to do with killing people.
Apart from the ever present and all powerful Early Warning System Local Channel, there are the speed reduction, the 30 second lock delay, the scan resolution delay, the can't cloak while being locked rule, the uncloaking when within 2k of an object rule and the no warping, locking while cloaked rule.
Its almost as if the cloaking device was deemed a griefer module and set apon by 50 rabid carebears during their menstrual cycle. I can't imagine any other nerf being applied to it to make it more ****ty or useless.
and even when you put it OFFLINE, as in pull the plug, switch it off etc, you still get the scan resolution penalty?
As for the covert ops cloak, its pointless as well afaik, considering the only ships that can use it have around 20 grid and two high slots.

I use a PRototype cloak on my indy, its quite handy when all you want to do is sit still and hide. ---------------------------

Cloaking is probably mostly meant to be used for scouting. For example: You sit at a gate to see when someone flies through.

The cloaking devices are one of the best devices CCP ever introduced. And thats because (!) their penalties. There are so many useless/nerfed to hell devices in this game, but cloaking is well done.
Imagine you could fit a Raven with a cloaking device which has no penalties at all. Huh. What an uber ship for every ganker. Imagine you could fit an indy with it - same uber ship for a hauler.
So cloaking is very powerful and in the current state its usable for the casual solo player and for a group of pilots too.
A covert ops would need a little bit more power grid, but thats all adjustments i'd made...

This statement must be some kind of a joke unless you have never used a cloaking device
Hint .... I wouldn't call it "covert" when you have to decloak to jump and them move / appear to cloak again.
Change its name from Covert Ops Frigate to "maybe you might get lucky and not seen but there again have a big sign above my head shouting I'm here I'm here" Frigate

Though I could do without the scan resolution penalty, I find the cloak most useful. With skills, the time delay to lock a target can be brought down to 10 seconds (level V cloaking) with Improved Cloak II. -------------------------

I'm a scout.
My Covert Ops cloak in my Covert Ops Frig is worth every skill point invested.
If you don't do SERIOUS scouting, do NOT waste your skill points on learning to use the Covert Ops cloak or Frig.
Proto Cloaks are VERY useful. If you have a Proto Cloak mounted (ANY ship can mount one: uses 1 power, 30 CPU and ZERO cap drain), then if you go to a Safe Spot and turn it on, you are SAFE. Anyone who flys cargo in 0.0 should mount a proto cloak on their Cargo Frig/Cruiser/BS/Hauler. For pvp, having SAFE safe spots can also be useful, but you have to spend a high slot. As an added benefit for tactical use, if you are on a team, and your team needs a gate watched, you can get into position to watch (some distance from the gate), turn it on, and then stay and watch. Just make sure you are lined up to warp on the tiny chance an enemy starts getting near you.
So, yes, cloaks are useful.

as a ambush tool they are usless. there usless in 00 space aswell becouse you can still be seen in local chat so they no your watching them.
the only place i see a real use for them tactily speaking is in empire where you blend in more with the local chat with the other people in it so you can camp a gate propre with a cloak then i figure.
the problrm with cloak is your not realy cloaked from the local chat with it.
so what good is there too be cloaked..

Originally by: Wrangler Cloaking is probably mostly meant to be used for scouting. For example: You sit at a gate to see when someone flies through.
If that is the case, then why:
1) do you still appear in local chat
2) can you not run a passive targeter, ship and cargo scanners while cloaked?
Don't want people using them for random ganking, that I can understand. But if covert ops ships and cloaking devices are meant for intelligence gathering, why are they so limited in thier intelligence gathering capabilities?
